MIL thinks I’m being unreasonable!

I take direct sun exposure quite literally for LO who’s 10 weeks old. She thinks that as it’s 5pm when we go for a walk in carrier and UV Level is 2 or less that I’m being silly for covering him up fully when out for a walk.

You know that sunlight is good for people, including babies? Vitamin D and all that. It’s 5pm, presuming in the uk it’s fine.

Sun exposure wouldn't even occur to me at 5pm in the UK. I wouldn't know what the UV level is either, my kids get suncream on hot sunny days and nothing otherwise.

At 10 weeks, I'd have him wear a sunhat and babygrow, and keep him under a parasol.

He's still very little and his skin is probably sensitive. I think I started to relax around my ds at about 8 months. Then I covered him in factor 50 and a sun hat because he was an enthusiastic explorer.

Another with your MIL. Your baby needs some exposure for vitamin D

If you're going for a 2h walk then I suppose you're right but if you have the baby in the carrier I'm guessing it's just a quick nip to the corner shop or the school run etc?

I'd definitely not bother with baby sunblock or a hat for a short walk. If it's really sunny and hot I might put a hat on him, or else just aim for the shady side of the street.

A different NHS guidance also mentions the most common cause of Rickets is low vit D. I take my chances with barely existing sunlight at 5pm. Another vote for MIL.

What do you mean by ‘covering him up fully’? If you mean a cotton, footed baby gro and a hat then I think that’s fine.

How are you covering him up? If its a blanket over the hood of the pram that's a no. I hate when I see this. Poor babies are getting baked..

I'm with your MIL, generally.

I would have used strong suncream and a sunshade earlier in the day, or stayed indoors if it was extremely hot, but after 5 I would say all is fine in short doses.

I couldn't get mine to keep hats of any description on when they were babies. They just yanked them off and threw them out of the pram/pushchair.

Yup, I'm with your MiL too.

A walk round the block / to the local shop / to take an older child somewhere at 5pm (presuming you are in the UK) is fine.

We all need some sunlight to get some vitamin D

At 10 weeks I completely agree with you OP. Their skin is too delicate at this age to be exposed to direct sunlight in summer.

Yes but they don’t expect them to live like vampires. 5pm sun is absolutely fine. Just not middle of the day when it’s blazing hot
