Car sale disagreement

Filipferdana · 23/07/2024 18:20

Shamelessly posting for traffic and survey results 😂 more of a wwyd...

I'm selling my car soon. It has a noticeable scrape down the side, which I couldn't afford to fix when it happened a couple of years ago. DH thinks I should just 'sell as seen' as we don't have cashflow to fix. I think I should get a quote at the very least, so we can properly adjust the sale price, or use credit card to fix and repay when we sell, and sell for its proper price. I don't think it'll sell with the scrape, even with an adjusted price; he disagrees.

So..
Yabu - sell for lower price and let new owner fix
Yanbu - get a quote and/or borrow money to fix before selling

I’d just sell it as it is. The longer you have it, presumably it is just costing you more anyway. Some people buy cars for parts and aren’t worried about cosmetic issues.

I don't think I'd buy a car that needed immediate work to look pristine (or as close as you can get with a 16 plate) though? And yes - it's costing money and I use it probably once a fortnight. Not worth it. But I want it to be sellable...

Is it dented or just scraped?

You can sell it as is but make sure the sale price reflects that. Almost everyone will STILL ask for money off. Selling privately is a right pain at times.

missmollygreen · 23/07/2024 20:35

Get it fixed.
There will be hundreds for sale with no dent/scrape. It would have to be significantly cheaper for me to want to buy a damaged car over a clean car.

Eviebeans · 23/07/2024 20:40

How much are they selling for without damage?

polkadotpixie · 23/07/2024 20:56

I just sold mine with a smashed wing mirror (not caused by me!) and cracked paintwork all down the wing

I just adjusted the price accordingly and it sold within a week or so

This was for a 13 plate so not much older than yours

Just scraped. A friend said I might be able to t-cut it, whatever that is?! It's quite a shallow scrape (apparently) as hasn't shown any signs of rusting at all.

Yes will definitely make it clear, if I don't fix.

T-cut , red bottle, cloth and a little bit of time and it'll be gone ? If it is just a scrape ?

This is my viewpoint. Problem is, we don't have the money to fix, will have to put it on cc. And if it takes a while to sell, we'll have repayments to figure out.

Apparently about 5-5.5k. I'm reckoning about 500 for the fix. I'd be happy with 4-4.5k, it has low mileage for its age, but it's not a cheap car to run and I don't want to keep hold any longer than necessary.

See above - a friend has said this. I need to find the time to give it a try first! What's red bottle? (Sorry - please excuse my naivety 😂)

You can probably get it looking a lot better with some T Cut or Farecla G3 compound. It's basically like a polish with some abrasives in it. Apply with a damp cotton cloth and rub hard but not too hard. It's worth a go and should improve it IF the scrape is the other cars paint. If the top coat of yours is gone and you can see the primer on yours it wont help.

@Filipferdana T-cut comes in a red bottle , don't think it would take you long at all ?

I think "we buy any car" deducts £400 per panel with any dings scrapes etc.

So if it's just a door that's one panel, if it's the door and rear door it's two, if it's that plus the rear quarter then it's three x £400 etc.

Depending on how much it costs to repair it would definitely be worth t-cutting it for a tenner (don't go crazy with it, it's like nailvarnish remover, you just want to take off the top layer and it'll mix into the scrape and hide it. You don't want to take all the paint off by mistake!
