DH farts stink - caused argument

DH used to drink protein shakes and he would make the worst smell you could imagine. It would actually wake me up in the middle of the night and I'd have to go and sleep on the sofa.

After putting up with this for years, I had enough and jokingly said that I would move out if he didn't stop drinking the protein shakes. I actually meant it though.

Well he stopped! Life was lovely and I got to sleep in my bed without it feeling like someone had rubbed dog muck in my face.

Cut to now, about 2 years later and he had started training at the gym again and he has come home, farted and stunk the whole house out. It lingers in the air for like 20 minutes! God knows what his insides must be like.

I'm now in a foul mood. From 1 fart. AIBU? What would you do in this situation? I know I am overreacting but I don't want to smell his shit!

It’s disgusting. My ex did vile farts (from a poor diet, not protein shakes) and made no effort to hold them or go elsewhere. Even going out shopping, I’d be stood next to him and the whole aisle started to stink whilst he had this smirk on his face, no shame at all. It’s bloody awful when it’s deliberate or has a root cause that can be helped.

Ah I stink sometimes but I have ibs I can’t help it.

I can’t imagine wanting to have the kind of gas that smells like something died was eaten by something else that crawled up your butt and also died. It’s bloody horrible and embarrassing and frankly the gas hurts.

Yanbu his choosing to stink.

I agree with this. It’s the worst feeling ever have no choice in the matter. If you do have a choice… choose not to!

Is it huel?

Els1e · 23/07/2024 19:53

light a candle. It gets rid of smelly gas

Grazianoscubanheel · 23/07/2024 20:09

Just spray the bastard with some cheap perfume every time he does it.

DilemmaDelilah · 23/07/2024 20:14

My DH also has really smelly farts, but he eats a normal diet and I haven't been able to identify anything that brings them on.

It is one of the reasons we sleep in separate rooms now... but only one. I love him dearly but I don't want to sleep in his fart miasma.

Do you have a shed?

RachelGreep87 · 23/07/2024 20:50

YAB slightly U.
Yes its unpleasant but you are benefiting from a fitter body to sleep with.

You don't get fitter from protein shakes. He could avoid them entirely and still achieve similar results with the bonus of not smelling rancid and making his partner sick to her stomach. She can't (doesn't want to) sleep with him anyway so no benefit there!

Gwenhwyfar · 23/07/2024 21:55

"Surely when you're going to fart you've a small window of opportunity to stick your arse out the door or window, or go outside? Or do it in the toilet?

No, for some of us it's out straight away.

QueenBitch666 · 24/07/2024 00:27

I use vegan protein drinks for my workouts and my farts aren't fetid. But then I'm not a bloke 🤢

Avatartar · 24/07/2024 00:46

OP love your writing style, it did make me chuckle. Serious issue however and he needs to be ousted to the sofa until he either stops taking them or sees GP to tell him how to combat stinky guts if he continues. Do not put up with it

Yourdemonsyourproblem · 24/07/2024 02:12

He can try other protein which doesn't make his belly bubble

OMG, I expect his colleagues love him.

It’s very disrespectful to you so frankly, if he gets defensive and won’t be more considerate, sort out a way forward which works for you both, I’d kick him out. In a subtle way it’s a kind of abuse.

No way would I live with a disrespectful bag of sewage.

I’d bet my house that he doesn’t do it in front of his work colleagues.

BettyBardMacDonald · 24/07/2024 05:36

I am older and have had numerous lovers and relationships and never once heard (or worse, smelled) any of them break wind. Ever. And vice versa. Who on earth raised these people who think it's ok to subject others to that??

(Disclaimer; i realize those with medical conditions can't help it).

Whatever happened to keeping a bit of mystique and dignity? Jesus.
