To think they’re having a laugh charging this

We have recently bought a 3 bed semi with no water meter. Fixed yearly price of £582.47.
They have (somehow) worked out that although we missed the first 3 months of the year, we will be paying £62 a month for water. I think this is stupidly high for a 3 bedroom house, 2 adults and a baby. They aren’t budging on the price & saying we’ll have to just request they instal a water meter.

AIBU thinking it’s high?

I pay £40 living alone.

BuyOrBake · 22/07/2024 21:44

I wish mine was that low!!!

Move to Wales. We pay a fortune for our water. We put up with all the rain and then it gets pumped to Birminghamwhere they pay less for it than we do!

Matronic6 · 22/07/2024 21:48

Also 2 adults and a toddler in a 3 bed. Our bill was £58 a month until we got meter installed. Now it's £34.

hilariousnamehere · 22/07/2024 21:50

I pay £28/month on a meter, just me and two cats. Have a dishwasher but don't run it every day, washing machine ditto. Looks like it's on the lower end of what people are paying, going by this thread. £62 is less than 2.5 times that so doesn't seem terrible for 2 adults and a baby?

Londonrach1 · 22/07/2024 21:54

Meter might be more. Can you ask your neighbours what they pay month. Just be careful and do some research.

PuppyMonkey · 22/07/2024 21:56

We have a water meter and get a bill every six months. Last one was £173 and the one before that was £184. Severn Trent Water.

Sounds like mine is pretty good value looking at what you lot are all paying!

Izzynohopanda · 22/07/2024 21:58

We pay around £60 for three adults in the house.

TwistedSisters · 22/07/2024 21:59

We pay £40 but we have a septic tank so aren't paying any sewerage charges ... before we moved, we were paying £80 in a 3 bed detached , family of 4. £62 sounds about right to me.

HighHeelsOnCobblestones · 22/07/2024 22:03

We're paying that on a water meter for 2 adults, 2 kids in a 3 bed semi detached.

Aligirlbear · 22/07/2024 22:05

Sounds cheap ! We had to sort out my parents house 3 bed semi , no water meter and had to start paying £75 per month even though it was empty ! Get yourself a water meter asap - we were offered one at no cost

Agapornis · 22/07/2024 22:06

What you pay with a meter varies hugely by supplier. Thames Water: 2 adults, about £30-35 a month. Having a meter was well worth it here. A friend previously paid £50 a month for 1 person in a 1 bed flat!

Unless of course, you're washing your car, taking lots of baths, watering the garden, filling up a hot tub and the swimming pool...

poshfrock · 22/07/2024 22:07

Wow ! I can't believe how cheap these all are! I pay £92 per month for 2 adults. No meter. We don't have a dishwasher and only do about 4 loads per week in the washing machine. I think I need to ask about a meter. Our supplier is Yorkshire Water.

I pay £40 living alone.

I pay more than that living alone - not far short of the OP's proposed payment.

MumApril1990 · 22/07/2024 22:13

We are paying loads as not on a meter, they said they can’t fit one because we have two inlets so we’ve no other option. I know we would be paying loads less on a meter.

Ineedaholidayyyy · 22/07/2024 22:14

£21 a month for my family, small house though. 2 up 2 down.

OhmygodDont · 22/07/2024 22:16

Metered unmetered so we have one they can see but we don’t use it, five people, greenhouses, orchard, pool so lots of water usage. £46 a month 3 bed.

Another2Cats · 22/07/2024 22:18

That sounds very reasonable. I know somebody in a one bed flat with no water meter (the water company couldn't install a meter) and they are paying £277 per year for one person in a one bed flat.

245Help · 22/07/2024 22:19

£25 for waste and £8 for fresh here in the south. Two people, two bed flat, unmetered.

foothandmouth · 22/07/2024 22:19

They won't/can't budge on the price. Unmetered water is billed April-april. So you have missed aoril, May June

If you want to pay for use then get a metre.

LeroyJenkinssss · 22/07/2024 22:20

Gosh I was slightly annoyed when ours went up from £27 to £33 on a flat rate (no sewerage though)! I’ll count myself lucky now!

That’s a lot! The We’re with Yorkshire water too, on a meter. Approximately £30 a month, 2 adults. You would be better off with a meter.

newyeardelurker · 22/07/2024 22:26

£36 for 3 people in a 4 bed house, Thames water, on a meter.

This Is less than we paid unmetered in a smaller house, same area.

Another in the get a meter camp.

Ours is similar, 152 for the past 6 months. 2 adults, 2 dogs and both full time working from home so in all day.

I'm a single person and my water on a meter is around 600 a year.
