To wonder if white furniture is feminine or girly.

Need to get some storage in ds1 bedroom and he is 12.5.
Am tempted to buy white furniture as I can swap it out into the other rooms if it doesn’t work.

DS1 is on the spectrum and probably won’t process this conversation. I don’t want to spend money building, buying and getting it delivered, and then realise.

aibu to buy white chest of drawers/tallboy etc for a boy’s room? Perhaps I can paint a dark wall or something and have a contrast.

White furniture isn't girly or famine. It is very much boring but not girly. I can't believe this is an actual thought.

I have to spend my life guessing how he will react to things. It’s the only way forward!

Go to IKEA and look about?
If he won't give an opinion then you might just need to say tough to him if he doesn't like it then.

Yes those two options won’t work. IKEA is a very busy place. Saying tough to a child on the autistic spectrum wouldn’t always be helpful in my experience. An inability to regulate emotions will just result in a downward spiral.

I have adhd and possibly autistic.

I actually don't like huge amounts of white. It's visually quite difficult on my eyes. Not sure why. It's like nothing to process and can be painful.

However smaller amounts of white are fine and really nice. A white duvet with grey and cream throw and pink cushion. Some white boxes on a grey cupboard etc. I also prefer tonal than high contrast.

Maybe you could get a large framed picture. That's a pretty easy way to introduce colour and can be changed.

Sounds great. I will definitely get some nice pictures. Thank you.

If you have any doubts, maybe just go for some of the lighter wooden ones. There's nothing to dislike about those.

I think they age better than the white ones too if they get any knocks, spills etc.

Can the furniture be painted/wrapped if he doesn't like it?

Furniture is inanimate and possesses neither sex nor gender.

Oh give over.

Good point. I am a bit crap at diy, and have two autistic kids and a full time job but maybe I could do something with it if need be. Not crap. More clueless as yet!!

What about getting everything in white but getting the wardrobe door a different colour (in the wood colour or they do blue, green, pink from memory) ?

You could get the kalax rather than a chest of drawers then you can get different colour (or the seagrass ones) of the baskets for socks, undies etc?

Actually I realise you are right - never realised that before.

It will matter to me, if he says get that stuff out of here and it cost me £300/400. I would be gutted!!

Do you always do as he says? I'd get it out and give him cardboard boxes....his sen is irrelevant

Orangeandgold · 22/07/2024 15:49

White is neutral.

my dd has black furniture - and I’d say that’s neutral too - just dark.

You explain it over a few weeks get pictures of two you like and ask his preference once he's decided that is it.

I got sucked in by the lovely white ikea furniture. I'd definitely go for wood in the future.

Also don't get tricked by black as that shows all the dust!!

I’m imagining that you don’t live with any children who are on the spectrum. Autism is not just an educational thing. It permeates all aspects of life.
