Too many chemicals are used in cleaning

I love watching cleaning accounts on Instagram. It gives me motivation to clean my home, though the reality is often difficult with a young child and baby. But.... It gets me thinking about how many chemicals are used in some homes and whether this is actually worse for us...?

For example, the main lady I watch does a normal clean daily involving:

-A foam spray on bathroom sink and bath
-A different spray on the mirrors
-Chemical wipes on the blinds
-Toilet cleaner
-Chemicals used to mop
-Stuff on the carpet before vacuuming
-Fabric spray on sofas and bed
-A different spray on the sink and dish rack
-A different spray on the worktops
-A different spray on all table tops
-Etc etc etc etc

Do most people use lots of chemicals in their homes?!

I must admit I am very slovenly compared to this..I use toilet cleaner and a spray for the bathroom... I have wipes in the bathroom to be used for the loo seat etc as and when needed. But I hardly use anything apart from that. In my kitchen I mainly just use a sponge and washing up liquid. I have antibac spray but dislike the thought of it getting into foods we're eating. I use a steam mop without chemicals unless there's a bad spill when I use a spray too.

I grew up in a house with an old school lone dad who hardly cleaned at all so was never taught to use so many products.

YABU: that many chemicals is normal, you are gross.

YANBU: too many chemicals is bad for you.

I gave up using fancy floor cleaner I use a dab of washing up liquid in a bucket of hot water. For mirrors and windows I just use one part white vinegar to three parts of water - brilliant results . I use cheap disinfectant to freshen bins and a bathroom spray and kitchen spray .

Remember, these people are sponsored by xyz company and encouraged to sell these products to you.

Just use what you are conformable with.

I agree. I can get a migraine just watching the Hinch woman.

We use an M&S plant based kitchen spray in the kitchen for some things (and the equivalent in the bathroom). I use MINIML washing up liquid and hot water for other things and then Nancy Birtwhistle’s Pure Magic for the loo. I also use eCloths for shiny things and glass.

That said, I have cleaners once a fortnight who use a Flash bathroom cleaner and an Astonish kitchen cleaner but otherwise it’s just soap and water.

Everything is a chemical. You have to be more specific. What is a ‘bad’ chemical and what is the evidence cleaning your home with it is bad for you?

Waveforme · 22/07/2024 09:51

I agree. Then people stand around scratching their heads at steep upticks in cancer etc
Can imagine your poisoned house and our toxic water supply is helping

How much overlap between the "vulva not vagina" and the "everything is a chemical" groups is there, I wonder? 🤔 😀

I hate cleaning stuff because they all smell so bad. I use washing up liquid and hot water for most things, alongside bicarb, vinegar, lemon juice.

Hankunamatata · 22/07/2024 12:08

I use a washing up liquid to clean bathroom and bit diluted bleach for areas that need mildew removing.

Kitchen I just use a multipurpose cleaning spray. Neat is my fav at the mo

Rainydayinlondon · 22/07/2024 12:18

Washing up liquid is great on hobs at removing grease. I loathe sprays on kitchen tables and work surfaces… like OP I feel that fairy liquid is tried and tested and probably won’t harm you if you were to ingest it.
Bleach in the loo and bathroom spray on sinks etc although I prefer the more natural ones on the market ( though they don’t remove built up line scale)
Furniture polish spray for wood.
That’s it.

I agree I just use Ecover toilet cleaner and MP. Only clean once a week. I hate to think what all this endless cleaning and chemicals are doing to immune systems.

Sprinkle5 · 22/07/2024 12:29

Yy to washing up liquid. I use Ecover washing up liquid for all sorts of things. It’s great for getting grease out of clothes.
