Would you eat steak that’s 2 days past its best before date??? Looks ok in packaging, yet to smell.

Almost certainly. Especially if it's that shrink wrap stuff

TamingofShrews · 22/07/2024 08:10

Unless it smelled badly yes, I would. Possibly just cook a bit more thoroughly.

MyOtherHusbandIsAWash · 22/07/2024 08:10

No but I eat mine rare. I’d eat if it smelled ok and was well done.

SeeSeeRider · 22/07/2024 08:14

'Best before' is not 'eat by', especially if it's been properly kept (e.g. in a fridge).

RobertSalamander · 22/07/2024 08:14

Best before ≠ use by.

TheDuck2018 · 22/07/2024 08:15

Yeah, as long as it smelt ok

Changingplace · 22/07/2024 08:15

If you buy meat from the butchers there is no ‘best before’ - how does it look/smell? That’s a much better way to judge meat than the date that’s stamped on it.

Ponoka7 · 22/07/2024 08:17

I wouldn't but I've got a sensitive stomach. I would feed my DP it and most of my family would be able to eat it.

olympicsrock · 22/07/2024 08:17

Yes I would - if it smelled ok

Nicebloomers · 22/07/2024 08:18

Yes I would if it passed a smell test.

Kta7 · 22/07/2024 08:18

I think OP means ‘use by’, they won’t have put a ‘best before’ date on meat.

(If it looks and smells fine it’s probably ok.)

TreeShrugger · 22/07/2024 08:19

Depends on how it looks and smells. If
both fine, yes I would.

usernother · 22/07/2024 08:20

Definitely. I'd never waste steak.

Sherrystrull · 22/07/2024 08:46

No. It'll be a use by and I wouldn't risk it. I'd be annoyed at the waste though.

Candlelights1 · 22/07/2024 08:47

I would definitely eat it.
Not mince, but steak for sure.

I was just going to say this, people use the terms interchangeably.

On a piece of meat its going to be a use by date, not a best before date

My OH calls all these dates the 'sell by date'. Wrong every time.

isthismylifenow · 22/07/2024 08:50

I would not even hesitate, if its been kept in the fridge that is.

It will be tender and more flavourful. Aged.

soupfiend · 22/07/2024 08:51

Oh and I would definitely eat it.

If you're worried slow cook it and put it in a curry or chilli

Lighteningstrikes · 22/07/2024 08:51

Yes, it will be fine.

If it (or anything) is off, you'll know by it's look/smell.

Whowhatwherewhen01 · 22/07/2024 19:21

I’ve just eaten it. I’ll report back 😂

Yes, it will be fine.

If it (or anything) is off, you'll know by it's look/smell.

If something is "off" you can only detect spoilage bacteria by its taste and smell. Food poisoning bacteria (which is the bacteria that can cause serious illness) and their toxins can not be seen, smelt, or tasted. So something might be "off" and you'd have no idea until you ate it and got ill.

Mountainpika · 22/07/2024 19:56

I buy fresh cut for me from our local butcher. So no dates of any sort on it. No harm so far in decades of buying there.

Anotherparkingthread · 22/07/2024 20:16

Most beef is hung up for 28 days to mature before they even sell it. A few days in the fridge shouldn't make a differenc, provided it doesn't smell it looks weird it's fine. You know when meat is off.

earlymorningcurlewcall · 22/07/2024 20:17

Yeah, I would. If the colour is good and it smells okay then it makes it to my plate 💪

Hadjab · 22/07/2024 20:19

Of course! I can’t speak to other people’s fridges, but mine is super chilly, which means you can eat food that’s over a week past its use by date, if not more, depending on what it is.
