AIBU to ask the thief who returned my TV to arrange its disposal?

So, here's a good one for you. I live in a block of 12 flats and had to replace my 55" Samsung TV. The courier was scheduled to deliver the new one and pick up the broken one. A text message referred to a one-person delivery by Nicole. To help out, I carried the TV down to the foyer, which requires a door code to enter, and left it there for about 20 minutes.

When the (two male 🙄) couriers arrived, my TV was gone! I asked neighbours if they had seen anyone take it. No one had. The couriers needed me to let their management know there was nothing to pick up. I had to pay £35 for the recycling and disposal!

Spoke to other neighbours, and they were horrified. They said to file a police report and inform building management. I did both. Five hours later, the TV was back! Apparently, the thief who is clearly a resident in this block of 12 units returned it after realising it was broken. 🤦‍♀️ There was no visible damage at all and we've only had it 9 months. Surely they thought they were in for a treat!

I wrote a note and taped it to the TV:

> "FAO the person who earlier stole this TV. A police report was filed. The building management has been informed. The courier company came to collect for £35 and couldn't collect it for disposal. You are now responsible for arranging its disposal. Thank you."

Then, I wrote to property management saying that whoever stole the TV took possession of it and is now responsible for its disposal.

AIBU to expect the thief to now handle the disposal, considering they stole it?

TL;DR: Thief stole my broken TV, realised it was broken, returned it, and now I want them to handle its disposal. AIBU?

(Name changed out of an abundance of caution)

Interesting one

my neighborhood has a convention of anything placed on the curb is fair game for taking. I’ve put things out for disposal before, that I have pre-paid for, and had someone come take the item before the disposal pickup. At that point I typically just find something else in my house that needs to go and take that out to the curb.

things I suspect people will want, I out out with a free sign instead of arranging disposal, but I’ve been surprised at what people will take.

I’ve never had anyone bring something back. That is a new wrinkle.

If it was on the curb - fair game. It was inside the foyer. It is not publicly accessible and there are only 12 flats. It was gone inside 20 minutes. Any reasonable person would maybe wait a day or something before assuming a 55" TV with no visible damage is up for grabs, no?

Put it on the curb with a note saying free, please take. Problem solved 😂.

It's not that surprising. Our local council charge £25 to collect furniture and £35 for white goods. When we last used the service years ago it was two free collections a year!

shellyleppard · 21/07/2024 17:50

@Crispsandcola i recently brought a new fridge and freezer. The company wanted £25 for each item to recycle it, then £15 each item to install !!! So roughly £80. Our local council is now collecting it for £25 ..... sorted lol

RustyBear · 21/07/2024 17:50

Our council charges £66 - for that you can have up to 5 items taken, but there’s no reduction for less than 5.

Yes. You can't throw it in the bin.

I know right! But with my luck I'd get accused of fly tipping or something.

Bloody cheek - I bet it doesn't cost them that to deal with it! I would sling it in the back of the car and take it to the electricals section of my local tip but I'm guessing you don't have access to transport. Damn right your light fingers neighbour should pay.

They really do try to screw every last penny out of you don't they. The absolute audacity! 😆

Ariela · 21/07/2024 18:09

I'd just take it to the tip myself...

Really you’re going to walk a 55” tv to a tip after already paying £35?

The closest to me would cost £30 round trip there and back. Again I paid £35 and the point of the post - someone nicked the TV before it was picked up which I arranged bc I haven’t a car. 🤪

maybe I’ll post the URL for the thief….
