To think porcelain floor tiles are awful

SweetCreamandCaramel · 21/07/2024 12:48

We have porcelain tiles laid through pretty much the entire lower floor of the house. Dh thinks they're fine, but I hate them, they're cold, and feel like more of an outdoor tile. The tiles are old, and I have noticed a few parts crumbling away, multiple little pit holes, wearing next to grout, and in areas etc. Is there a porcelain tile fixer that I can sort of smoosh, and smooth in, to disguise the worn bits? I need beige.

If they end up being unsalvageable, can they be tiled over? Getting them removed would just be a huge upheaval, and too expensive at the moment. I'm looking for a cheap temporary fix.

This probably isn't an AIBU, but reposted for traffic.

Thank you

Could you cover them with a real good quality Lino?
some of the Lino available now is amazing - wood effects, tile effects.

I have the same so 100% understand where you are coming from.

I have to wear shoes as slippers in winter as get chilblains otherwise. Dd dropped a knife yesterday and added 2 chips to all the others in the kitchen. We bought the house like this and too much trouble and money to change it.

Ive got rugs on mine.

@mogtheexcellent yes that is exactly how I feel. They were in the house when we bought it a few years ago. They looked so posh and lovely at first, but have worn, and the reality is that i have jar to put runners and mats all over. They're freezing! I caught my foot on the edge of one of the worn ones yesterday, and I need to do something about them. Getting them removed isn't an option. We have an old kitchen, which will also need to be replaced in the future, so I just want a temporary, relatively cheap fix for now.

@Irishmama100 the lino sounds like a great idea. Would you just sort of lay a full sheet on the tip or individual tiles. I would worry it would dent in where the grout is. I need something durable, non-slip, as it is a high traffic area, gets cleaned every day.

You can get a coloured epoxy resin to fill in the chips bit of trial and error getting the right shade. If you have a spare tile of two put some chips in it and practice

SeeSeeRider · 21/07/2024 13:04

They are hard. I once dropped some spectacles with glass lenses on a porcelain tiled floor and they shattered, and I had to drive from Taunton to Salisbury. A friend lent me her spare pair and I put them right down the end of my nose and screwed my eyes up till I got home. Or the tiles can crack. Also if you fall on them it hurts more, and they can feel cold.

Do you know where sells this? They have sort of a blemish marble effect on them if that makes sense. Every one is a little different to the other, so I am hoping it would blend in.
You cannot buy them anymore, they're an odd size. We had some spare from the previous owners, and did get a tiler to replace acouple that were cracked but even those have started wearing a little too. I think they're just old at this point.

Us too, but the tiles still look bad in the areas that are worn, and on show. I hate having so many mats down. Even the dining chairs are causing further damage to the tiles, despite having soft feet, and I don't think a rug under here would work, we have young kids, so i am constantly cleaning. All of the rugs shrink the space, I prefer more of an open look, easier for cleaning too.

Has anybody had any luck with self-adhesive stickers to go over each tile? Would they just peel off with cleaning?

We have done that in our bathroom. A screed has to be laid down on top of the tiles first, to make an even surface on which to lay the new floor covering. Definitely recommend doing it.

We were in an hotel where they'd covered the terracotta tiled floor with some sort of clear thick varnish of sorts. It looked wonderful and made cleaning easy. This protected the tiles and the grout enabling it to be easily cleaned. I had a terracotta tiled kitchen floor in my house at the time and every three months I’d have to spend a day scrubbing the lot and applying polish, it was such a chore.

@Sosorryliver thank you for taking the time to send me the links. I will check this out. The crumbled parts are getting progressively worse, so hopefully the patch up will slow it down a little.
