Customers who mess up shelves of food

They grab strawberries from the bottom layer - all strawberries have the same date and leave them in a mess. This can cause packs to be damaged or bruise the fruit.

See them grab tins which have 2-6 years shelf life from the back again making a mess.

Please be more careful when taking stuff off the shelves. The staff have got better things to do than straighten the displays

Not at our supermarkets. Grab from the front? Expires tomorrow. Grab from the back? Expires in 2 weeks.

If the supermarkets weren’t trying to take you for a ride by selling short dated food then I’d agree with you.

I doubt very much this is happening with tins. In all my local supermarkets, the almost out of date food is always at the front, including salads, bread, dairy and cooked meats etc. If you choose from the back you’ll get an extra 3-4 days on them which makes a hell of a difference to me. I don’t do it in a way that trashed the display though

Persiancouscous · 21/07/2024 12:46

I worked in retail and go to the back for fruit/ veg and chilled food as it normally has longer dates. I never cared when I was working in those sections... its hardly Primark - I couldn't cope working there.

malmi · 21/07/2024 13:15

Straightening the displays is just part of the job isn't it? One of the few bits that still require a paid employee. Once all supermarkets are operating on the Amazon style Just Walk Out model there will be little else to do.

LionAndEmperor13 · 21/07/2024 13:17

I always take from the back, but I don't mess up the rest of the stock.
Often stuff at the front has a very short expiry date. I understand that supermarket staff do this deliberately, but I'd rather have fresh food.

Totally this. Tubs of Yeo Organic 0% fat yogurt - front ones, 25 July, back ones, 8th August.

Offforatwix · 21/07/2024 13:20

There's something quite satisfying about rifling through a load of packets to find the one that has an extra day on the date.

longdistanceclaraclara · 21/07/2024 13:21

Always take from the back.

DustyLee123 · 21/07/2024 13:21

No. I will always take from the back/bottom.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 21/07/2024 13:21

The ones underneath haven't been picked up and chucked about like the ones on top. With strawberries, it's common to find one going mouldy unless you turn the punnet over a couple of times to check first.

The longer dated things are at the back or underneath and haven't been poked at or exposed to the light and greater air circulation. Tins at the back are less likely to be dented.

That's the point of bringing forward - to get unsuspecting customers to take the crappy stuff first. And many of us have worked in supermarkets, so know this.

Shoppers have better things to do than spend ages trying to find the stuff that's fit for purchase.

Ereyraa · 21/07/2024 13:21

What’s your skin in this, are you staff? It’s part of the job, tbh. Same as it was 20 years ago when I was worked in a supermarket at uni

I always take from the back.

Genegeniehunt · 21/07/2024 13:22

my guinea pig will only eat the freshest lettuce so i go for gold and almost dislocate my arms getting right in there to get the best date. Soz.

maudelovesharold · 21/07/2024 13:23

I wouldn’t just go rooting around messing up displays, especially if it’s obvious that a particular batch is all the same date, which is often the case with fruit. However.. I will get from the back, if it’s bread etc. or chilled food, as there is quite often a (sometimes considerable) difference in shortest/longest dates.

I also bring things forward from the back to ‘face up’ if I notice gaps while shopping, as there don’t seem to be enough staff to do that any more. And I can’t bear it when they’ve got several rows of the same line where they shouldn’t be, to cover up gaps in stock, and I’ll helpfully reposition them behind their correct price label. You’re welcome!

Mybusyday · 21/07/2024 13:24

Why on earth would someone buy an item of food with a shorter date?? It is usually the supermarket workers that mess up the shelves anyway, they simply don't care

uhOhOP · 21/07/2024 13:24

All the strawberries might have the same date, but they aren't all the same. Why not try to pick the tastiest strawberries? It's a short season, and I want to enjoy that which I'm paying a fair bit for every week and look forward to every year as we get into summer.

I agree with you on the tins, but I disagree when it comes to fruit which barely lasts three days once you get it home.

LegendInMyOwnLunchtime · 21/07/2024 13:32

Top basket if avocados… a mushy mess.

Yep, I move it and get the fit to eat ones from the next basket.

Maybe the assistants should have sorted this out first?

GalileoHumpkins · 21/07/2024 13:50

Straightening the displays is part of the job, all retail involves tidying up after customers.

Berga · 21/07/2024 13:52

I always take from the back, always have. I don't trash the other food though.

Please tell me what better things the staff have to do than straighten the displays in a store that is paying their wages, for doing jobs in a store?

BackOfAsda · 21/07/2024 13:58

Nope back or bottom has much better dates. Plus how would you know they're the same if you don't check 🤷🏼‍♀️ I'll keep messing the display up.

MyOtherHusbandIsAWash · 21/07/2024 14:10

I am usually quite happy to take from the front if I will be using in a few days. I hate food waste, especially meat, so don’t like to think that nearly out of date stuff might end up being thrown away because it remains unsold. I do check fruit/veg/meat packaging for damages though. And obviously if I need something to last the full week I need a long enough date for that.

GingerPirate · 21/07/2024 14:18

Exactly as others said.
They are taking me for a ride, no, actually,
they are effing thieving and I oughta be a good girl?
No thanks 😂

c3pu · 21/07/2024 14:40

Why don't the supermarkets put the longest date stuff at the front so we don't have to rummage about?

Not gonna happen, so it will be ever this...

HarrietSchulenberg · 21/07/2024 14:53

If you can't cope with this, never, ever get a job in a library.

wwyd2021medicine · 21/07/2024 15:05

There was someone on here last year who got told off by staff for taking bread from the back 😂
