To ask for more money from new job?

Is it expected/the done thing or is it a bit cheeky if they're already offering you a decent uplift on previous salary?

I've been made an offer from new company, more senior position and more responsibility.
New job offered 13% increase on previous salary but the pension contributions aren't as good so some of that would need to go towards matching the level of contribution I currently get. So maybe more like a 10% increase once that's been taken into account. I'd like a little more for the step up in responsibility but don't know if I'm just being greedy?

I've done it. The company had approached me and I was going to make sure their offer made me happy.

Depends how you would feel if the retracted their offer. I wasn't too bothered as I wasn't unhappy where I was.

Thanks, I am pretty unhappy in my role and keen to leave. That said I would be surprised if they retracted? Maybe would just say no. I've already verbally accepted it but they've just sent through all the paperwork to sign and I've had a more detailed look at the pension and benefits. Probably should've asked before verbally accepting shouldn't I?

Definitely ask for more! My DH did and they were happy to give him what he asked for.

You could send something like this;

Dear XY,^
^
It was great talking with you about the role and thank you again for the offer.
I'm very excited about the position and know that I could bring a lot to the role and would be an asset to the team.

There are a few points in your offer I would like to revisit to ensure the overall package works for me and my family.
Holiday allowance: in my current role, I get x days a year, so x would be a step back for me. Would you be able to offer x days to match what I have currently?
Salary: the offer matches my current salary and I was anticipating a slightly higher figure. Can we explore this further?
Pension: the pension contribution is lower than I get from my current employer. Would you consider increasing your contribution to match what I have currently?

What are you looking for OP? - do you want the value of the benefits matched?

Not too late to negotiate terms. You haven't signed anything yet.

I did it for similar reasons, although offer was poor, it matched my salary but pension and annual leave were materially worse. I pointed out the position and asked if salary was negotiable....and they retracted! So those situations can go either way. That being said, now is the time to negotiate.

WinterKate · 21/07/2024 08:50

Absolutely ask. This is your strongest negotiation time. My new job offered a £13k uplift but expected some heavy travelling so I cheekily asked for more money not expecting them to agree. But they did and chucked an extra £7k on. So a £20k pay rise!

For anyone who finds this thread after searching in the future. I asked and they gave it to me without hesitation. Wish I'd asked for more 🤣
