Name changed because this is just ridiculous.. and posted here for quick response, sorry.

I bought a huge bag of frozen fish goujons from a market shop which buys up all excess stock from restaurants and out of date, perishables etc.

I have cooked them and they smell really fishy. I know fish smells like fish.. but I'm worried about getting food poisoning as I'm now thinking maybe they've been thawed before they were re frozen or something.
There's no label on the bag (red flag??) so I don't know what kind of fish they are.
They don't taste bad.. but I just wanted some opinions before I go ahead and eat the rest in case I regret it 😵‍💫

Extra info - when I got them out of the freezer (they are breaded) my hands did then smell like fish. Is that normal, and am I likely to die a fishy death?? 🤣
Thank you all

They sound iffy tbh.....

minisoksmakehardwork · 19/07/2024 20:22

I love fish but I'd steer clear of that situation. Fish smells, but if it's a strong smell even when frozen I'd steer clear. Like you say, It might have been defrosted and refrozen. Sorry, looks like something from else needs to be on the menu tonight.

Bersham · 19/07/2024 20:24

Don't eat them. If they smell very fishy they have most likely gone off. Better safe than sorry.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 19/07/2024 20:25

It is normal for hands to smell fishy. (After handling fish!) But if there's an ammonia smell then it's off.

MumChp · 19/07/2024 20:26

Wouldn't eat them and would buy fish another place in future.

OhcantthInkofaname · 19/07/2024 20:30

Have you cooked them to a suitable internal temp?

heinzseight · 19/07/2024 20:32

Is it really worth the risk of being ill to eat them? Just have toast for dinner and don't take the chance

Arlanymor · 19/07/2024 20:33

What fish? Some fish smells more fishy than others. If it's generic fish then bin them. Most fish smells are mild.

Dotto · 19/07/2024 20:38

If in doubt leave it out. I'm sure you'll regret eating them and getting ill, more than you'd regret throwing them away unnecessarily. They hardly sound appetising anyway.

Fish smells fishy. Super fresh fish smells of the sea. It's harder to tell with frozen/ breaded.
When you break a cooked piece open do you smell a whiff of urea?
If it smells of urea it's gone too far. Check each piece. Otherwise you've got a bargain.
Tbh slightly out of date frozen fish (if it has stayed frozen) might not be as tasty as you hope but is unlikely to be off.

ricecrispiecakes · 19/07/2024 20:40

I used to work with fish and my hands never smelled just from handling frozen products. Fresh fish, yes, but not the frozen stuff. I would bin it.

Yousaidwhatagain · 19/07/2024 20:44

That whole store doesn't sound good.. why would you buy fish of all things from there?

littlefishyonalittledishy · 19/07/2024 20:47

I've bought a lot from there before , it's usually pretty good it's just end of line stuff.

If it's any help it actually tastes fine 😆

Doesn't smell of that at all, just very fishy when cooking, not as fishy when broken apart and sniffed 😆
