Do people still talk about/have ‘school discos’?

Was about to use this phrase with DN then wondered if it would mark me as an utter dinosaur. If you have kids around age 16 - are ‘school discos’ still a thing? Do they still use that phrase in 2024? Or is it called something else now (I’m assuming the events still happen)?

YABU - my 16 year old is looking forward to the school disco
YANBU - no one’s called it that for years

nope, not in my school or my children’s schools.

VelvetChaise · 19/07/2024 17:36

My children’s (primary) school still has discos

HumanbyDesign · 19/07/2024 17:38

My kid's junior school calls it the end of year or leavers party 🤷🏼‍♀️

Adviceneeeeded · 19/07/2024 17:47

I haven't seen discos in 11 plus for a long time
But proms are the done thing now. Or was when I was at school. I assume it's still the same

Investinmyself · 19/07/2024 17:49

No they don’t have school discos at secondary school. They usually have a prom on leaving at 16.
I’d imagine it’s down to staffing and supervision.

soundsys · 19/07/2024 17:50

I think discos are more for younger ones now. Ours have discos in primary but then a Y6 "leavers party" which is essentially exactly the same as the disco in younger years but they're too cool for discos by then

Haven't heard of discos in secondary for a long while

My Y7 had a school disco this week 🤷‍♀️

Somethingto · 19/07/2024 17:52

Interesting, sounds like it’s moved to calling them discos for primary age and ‘prom’ for secondary. The Americanisation of Britain continues!

I assumed from your title and first sentence you were talking about primary. It's not a phrase of associate with secondary.

BingoMarieHeeler · 19/07/2024 17:52

My kids’ primary school has a couple of discos a year. The local secondaries do prom.

This is exactly the same as when I was at school and I’m in my 30s. Year 9&10 got got ‘winter ball’ and years 11, 12 and 13 got prom (3 tier system so reception - year 4 is first school, year 5-8 is middle school, both did discos!)

Blackcats7 · 19/07/2024 17:55

Sadly like so many things it has been Americanised into “prom” now
We had/have perfectly acceptable language but some simply copy what they see online or on television.

I had a conversation yesterday where the youngish person I was speaking with referred to being able to see the “ocean” from my front window. I had to bite my tongue.

Investinmyself · 19/07/2024 17:57

They only have 1 prom at end of yr 11 (and some end yr 13)
whereas when I was at secondary school there was a monthly disco at local boys school we all went to.
