Was I "that" neighbour today? Or was my annoyance justified?

I suspect it might be both!

Pulling up to my house, on street parking, every man for himself. And there was a space outside, great. Indicate, start to reverse and some dickhead from waaaaay up the road pulls into it front end first from behind me. Now I think that this is NOT ok, ever. You just dont do that.

However, this is where I feel I might have been U. I shouted "OI! I was parking there!" and he said "Tough, there is no parking up the road" and I said "OH great so now where do I park?! I OWN THAT HOUSE!"

He scuttled off, DD said I was quite scary! And then about half an hour later moved his car. I didnt move mine on principle (dont ask me what priniciple, I dont really know, I was just too pissed off to show I cared enough to move it I think!).

Still annoyed at the way he nicked the space but equally ashamed at being THAT neighbour who appears to think that they own the road outside their house. I really dont and have NEVER done this before, if there isnt a space, its annoying but thats how it is!

Oh and to make matters worse, the vast majority if people on our road now are renters as for about ten years every house that went up for sale got bought by the BTL crowd.....so embarrassed.

Well done op I would have done similar!!! He's a cheeky cf, especially when you were already reversing!!!!! I would have definitely said something, good on you!!

It was the way he was just so "Oh well, tough for you" that incensed me! But to say "I OWN THAT HOUSE!!!" ....I could die!

He was obviously in the wrong.

Yes, your reply "I OWN THAT HOUSE!" made you look like 'that' neighbour, especially as you say so many neighbours are renting.

But it's done now.

I just dont know where it came from! I meant "I live there!!!" in the way that you dont do that anyway, but much less from your neighbours, but it came out wrong!

I think you might have missed the OP's point.

She's not asking if she should've said something, she's asking if what she said made her 'that' neighbour.

You know the type who think they're more important/have more rights than those who rent.

No, I was asking two things really. Was I wrong to be pissed off with the cheeky space nicking fucker, and was I wrong to have said what I said!

Even then, it doesn't matter if you live there or way down the road. A parking space is a parking space.

He was definitely in the wrong though.

shellyleppard · 18/07/2024 23:09

Why??? His attitude was shitty and he got a telling off..

He deserved it in my opinion

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 18/07/2024 23:10

There is a whole episode of Seinfeld about this exact scenario!

No - (although I'm sure you know that)

Yes - because it made you look as though you think you're more important than neighbours who probably pay double in rent, what you pay on a mortgage.

Greenlittecat · 18/07/2024 23:11

Nah you're totally in the right. He was a twat who nicked your space as you were parking.

Don't give it another thought, I doubt he has!

Do you think neighbours with mortgages are more important than neighbours who 'just' rent?

If so I can understand your post.

If not then I can't.

Yes he deserved a telling off but it's what the OP said that's the issue here.

shellyleppard · 18/07/2024 23:14

@TwattyMcFuckFace point taken 🙏💕

Copperoliverbear · 18/07/2024 23:25

I think you were right, he was a prick.

PyongyangKipperbang · 19/07/2024 00:00

I didnt mean "I am better as I pay a mortgage" just that he was happy to fuck things up for someone else on the street, I think I was trying to make the point that I wasnt just some random but managed to make myself sound like a total arse!

We have always had a bit of an unspoken agreement (well we used to before the BTL owners took over) that if you cant park outside your house, you dont pass the problem on to your neighbour. There is a communal car park a wee walk away and we would park there instead. So I guess I am still in that frame of mind.

But if I am honest that was small fry compared to the fact that he nipped in behind me when I was clearly already part way through parking. If I hadnt stopped he would have been looking at a new wing! I was fucking RAGING about that! Its one thing to do it to a stranger in a car park, although very bad form, but to do it on a residential street?!

Thedayb4youcame · 19/07/2024 00:05

He was totally in the wrong to do that.

But I have voted UBU because of what you said. Fair enough to let him know that what he did wasn't on, but the comment about "I own that house" brought you down to his level.

Even if you meant "I live there" it's still not a great thing to say, because you -just like me and every other car owner- made a conscious choose to own a vehicle, knowing that unless you have off-road parking, parking would always be a roll of the dice.

PollyPeachum · 19/07/2024 01:53

Half joking, half serious, by being an owner you have more commitment to an area.

That is true. The locals who have been here for years (including the renters at the other end who are all council renters) feel a sense of community and ownership. But the ones in the middle seem to come and go very quickly and dont seem to care.

One of the ladies in the council places who I know has rented there for 30 odd years, tried to organise a Coronation street party. Their end and our end where all up for it but the middle lot werent interested which buggered up the license/permission thing you need from the council for it.

You're not wrong here

thefamous5 · 19/07/2024 02:41

I'm a renter and I don't think you were being unreasonable.

I would have just assumed you meant you live there,

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 19/07/2024 02:46

🧐😆oops!

He was rude to zip in the space, he knew you were about to park.

I agree with you. It's alright for him to do that bloody cheek. Well done.
Some people say it's a public road until you park outside their bit then they get the hump. Some people have four up to six cars for one space on a drive. What I think is move to a cheaper area with bigger drive or better parking.

I am so, so glad I do not live near you, if this is what you judge your neighbours on.

Pussycat22 · 19/07/2024 07:43

PyongyangKipperbang, Oh my I feel your pain! Drives me insane, especially after a hard day's work.

DivergentTris · 19/07/2024 07:51

YANBU- you were reversing into a space, he drove in and behaved like an entitled twat. This is the issue, this is what you challenge.

YABU- I live there - so F*. This has no bearing on where you park if the parking is on the public highway. Anyone can park anywhere as long as it's legal and they don't behave like a twat. You lost your argument when you tried to make this your argument as you don't have an argument.

You should have just stuck to the fact that he was a dick head as he pulled a dickish move - keep it simple or you run the risk of coming across as an entitled dick head too making an argument out of something that doesn't exist.
