To be concerned at attitudes?

After some of the comments seen tonight, I’m starting to think people would prefer if workhouses are brought back. It seems there is such a small scope of what people think is an acceptable UC claim. No vulnerable people, only those lacking in personal responsibility seems to be a popular attitude.

Or is this just the post election fall out, where we have been so divided and the cost of living crisis is making us point fingers instead of pulling together as communities. Which detracts from us demanding higher expectations for British society and public services.

I don't even think anyone should have to work. I should be allowed to build a little cabin and grow food but get forced to work like a penalty for staying alive

I would miss Coca Cola though

Waaaaaah

I haven’t seen the threads you’re talking about. Are people on MN really advocating work houses or are you exaggerating a bit?

But I take it you want other people to work so you can have modern medicine, and the seeds/materials to live your remote idyllic life?

Exaggeration as usual. On here either you agree with extremely generous benefits for anybody who says they feel slightly depressed, or you want children to go up chimneys again.

I think fruit and vegetables seeds would be able to be found naturally if everything wasn't built up and concreted. I agree with you about medicine

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 18/07/2024 22:28

I think it’s the cost of living crisis mostly, people are working their arses off and still struggling then other people come on here telling everyone about the huge amounts of benefits they get for doing nothing. It’s easy to see why it’s jarring!

There will be very few 'jobs' in the quite near future. That's why governments and economic foundations are trialling Universal Basic Income.

Money for nothing: is universal basic income about to transform society?

The concept of a guaranteed income is gaining traction as a solution to the impact of AI and way to encourage more rewarding and socially valuable work

Meadowfinch · 18/07/2024 22:30

You'll have to be more specific Op.

There is obviously a wide range of attitudes but I can fully understand individuals who are working two jobs, 60hrs a week to afford a rented home, getting upset at some other sections of society having an easier time of it.
That isn't unreasonable, and people must be free to think as they please.
The govt needs to create an environment where work pays, while supporting the genuinely Sick & disabled.

kitsuneghost · 18/07/2024 22:31

I think workhouses are a great idea,
What exactly is the problem with supplying accommodation, work and food to those in need.

Yes this. And other complaining about having to work more hours, though still part time doesn’t help. There are lots of us with kids, working full time or nearly full time, having to use wrap around care and not entitled to any benefits.

cupcaske123 · 18/07/2024 22:33

I've noticed an intense attack on the welfare state over the past decade. Programmes like Benefit Street and non stop vitriol in the right wing press. Coupled with the fact that many people are a lot poorer and getting less for their money the vulnerable such as asylum seekers and the poor are prime scapegoats. People are punching down.

Working out who is genuine and who is not is extremely difficult. That said, trying to get PIP for disabled people seems madly hard.
Friend was cross when she found her husband was paying for care in a home where people with no savings got the same care. Everyone should get the same care obviously but the only answer I could come up with is that she had the choice of homes whereas others did not, or not so much.

Edingril · 19/07/2024 09:04

The word vulnerable and anxiety are the 2 most used words on here, if people can work they should work unless fully able to finance not working themselves individually

Treeslovetrees · 19/07/2024 09:42

My knee jerk reaction is that I am noticing an increase in attitudes veering towards the moochy side of life.
That said, in England right now, the price of everything makes ambition of home ownership and security really really depressingly difficult. Therefore I can kinda see why people might veer towards a cba attitude. The work house mentality and attitude of the deserving and undeserving poor is as old as the hills. It’s not new. Not sure what my own post is about now… only that people have always been subject to scrutiny about whether they deserve help/aid or not.

That one may or may not but there are plenty of people out there getting that kind of money. My friend gets over £3000 a month and she’s not the type to lie about it.

Your friend gets £3000 in benefits a month? How does she manage that with a benefit cap?

It doesn’t apply if someone in the household is disabled I don’t think.

LlynTegid · 20/07/2024 08:30

I don't want them back (one of my ancestors ended up in one in the 1890s), but I think you are right OP in that there are people who would be happy to see them return.
