To cancel wisdom tooth removal?

Went to the hygenist (abroad) today and she did an X ray and said I need to have my wisdom tooth removed as an emergency next week. I could see it needs doing but I haven't experienced any pain with it and I am due to go on holiday the following week for 3 weeks so my preference is to wait until after the holiday. My DH is away next week so i'm solo parenting and i'm just wondering if it's unwise to get it done incase I feel rough, then have to solo parent (a prettt savage 4 year old) or if i get dry socket/infection ill have 6 days between removal and travel. I also have low blood platelets so will need to get them checked before appointment to make sure they are not too low with the added risk of bleeding. Hygenist seemed to think it wasn't a big deal, even offered her mum (the receptionist) to babysit my son (bit odd). But she said it would take 1-2 hours. Interested to know how long it takes? Its a lower wisdom tooth with a big cavity.

It wont take 1 to 2 hours to come out. If it's already through then it's just pulled out like any other tooth. I'd wait till a more convenient time.

I felt weirdly upset/ sad when I had mine out, which I think may have been the anaesthetic. I had to rush to pick up my young children from school and then went home and moped on the sofa and even cried a bit. So, if you think you could do that with a 4 year old (think my youngest was a similar age at the time), then it might be okay. For me, it didn't hurt at all getting it done, and the recovery was totally fine, but the sadness was very unexpected.

Not a wisdom tooth but the next one along, I had out this week. X-ray, checks and anaesthetic took about ten minutes. Then ten minutes waiting for anaesthetic to work. Thirty seconds to get the tooth out.

Wisdom tooth may take a bit longer but not much.

Three complicated ones took 45 mins. I did get a raging infection in one which wasn’t picked up for a couple of weeks. It got better very quickly with antibiotics though.

I'd wait until after the holiday!

weebarra · 18/07/2024 22:01

I would wait. It shouldn't take hours, mine took about 15 minutes, but that was two upper and I know lower can be trickier.
I was ok on the day but did develop dry socket and it was a good couple of weeks before I felt normal again.

I had three removed recently, they were impacted though and I had to have a general. I woke up with a mouth full of stitches and it took two weeks to recover fully. Even with a straightforward removal, not eating properly for a week left me really ratty and irritated, I would not have been fine to solo parent.

I had my 3rd wisdom tooth out last Tuesday, all appointments have taken less than 10 minutes to remove, the worst part is the injection to numb the area.

As long as you follow the dentists guidelines you will recover absolutely fine. Soft food/soups. Don't smoke or any sucking motions (I.e straws/vaping). Salt water twice a day to prevent infection and you'll be fine.

Mine healed within 3 days last week.

I've had two wisdom teeth removed - one took less than five minutes, the other the best part of forty and I was bruised and swollen for days.

If it's not urgent I would wait until you're back from your holiday.

MrsToothyBitch · 19/07/2024 07:31

I've had 2 wisdom teeth out, both were fine and recovery was quick and straightforward. Probably took about 5 min tops for one tooth and 10 for the other- it had a long curved root. However they were top teeth, I think bottom ones are harder to remove!

I wouldn't book removal just before a holiday just in case of dry socket or infection. Wouldn't want to be careful with food or having to organise salt water gargles etc. Unless you're in agony or it's already infected or imperilling another tooth, book it for once you've settled back at home.
