And what does their bedtime look like when they’re over two?

DS was a champion sleeper and dropped his 2.5 hour nap at 3y3m. DD was a normal sleeper and dropped her 1.5 hour nap around 2y. DD did nap some days for a while after this but DS dropped completely and was then miserable all afternoon for a looong time. DD seemed quite cheerful throughout.

and to answer all your question both had a 7pm bedtime until they were 6/7.

roundspongecake · 18/07/2024 07:27

About 3 and a half and it was about 2 months of torture

JustMarriedBecca · 18/07/2024 07:28

About 20 months old. I was 34 weeks pregnant with DS and could have done with the nap myself.
We had a lot of quiet time instead. But it made it much easier getting out and about and not needing to be tied to a routine (didn't bother with DS 😂)

Bedtime looked like it did before. Bath, books, bed. Initially a bit easier, maybe 15 minutes and then back to upstairs at 6.30pm, bed at 7pm and that obviously got pushed back to 7.30pm and 8pm when I went back to work after DS (she was 3, he was 1).

It was a gradual proces starting from about 2.5. Firstly having to shorten the nap/wake them or they wouldn't go to bed until 9/10pm. Then having a phase where they only had naps on certain days when shattered, until by about 3 and a bit it got where they would just nod off for 20 mins in the car on the way home at 4pm or so.

LadyFeatheringt0n · 18/07/2024 07:39

Bedtime had to edge towards 7.30 when they had had a nap. For eldest, when first dropping the nap, it had to come forward to about 6.30pm or he went manic and overtired and we got stuck a cycle of it.

Stressfordays · 18/07/2024 07:41

Mine were all different. My eldest was 3.5, middle was around 2.5 and my youngest was 18m. All had 6.30/7pm bedtimes until around 5.

cloudy477654 · 18/07/2024 07:59

My eldest was never a great napper from 18m she would only nap half an hour if we went out in the car or pushchair, then dropped it completely about 2. Youngest was better but stopped napping around 2.5. They both had bedtime around 7pm at that age and woke up around 6.30am

soscarlet · 18/07/2024 08:13

He gave up the nap himself at 2y 2m, totally cold turkey. It was very hard. I brought bedtime earlier so he slept 13-14h overnight - he was a good night sleeper at 2 though so apart from the afternoons being hell for a couple of months while we adjusted it was OK. He’s 3 now and has decided he doesn’t like sleeping anymore.

SnapdragonToadflax · 18/07/2024 08:24

Between 2.5 and 3, but it was a gradual process - he'd often not nap at nursery but would still nap on my day off work and weekends, especially if we were in the car more than 10 minutes.

Also sometimes difficult to keep him awake in the car on the way home from nursery at 6pm... the worst nap!

He's always fallen asleep somewhere around 8pm, more like 8.30 in summer. That didn't really change when he stopped napping (and is still the same now he's 5). He wakes 7-7.30. He naturally goes to bed a bit later because of our routine - pick up from nursery/now childminder at 6, after we finish work.

MojoDojoCasaHouse · 18/07/2024 09:00

2 and a half and 2 exactly. Both terrible nappers so life was much easier without worrying about them. Bedtimes were fine, both in bed by 7.00 usually. They stopped waking at 5.00 am which was another bonus.

Crystallizedring · 18/07/2024 09:16

DD1, 23 months. I was gutted as I was heavily pregnant at the time. DD2 didn't really nap, for the first 4 months she had colic so she'd sleep wake up several minutes later and scream again. She did used to have a nap after that but it was never longer than an hour and she gave it up at 18 months.
DS used to sleep in the morning and afternoon about an hour each time. Gave up his morning nap at a year and gave up his afternoon nap at 2.5. He was the only one that did long nursery days though so if he had a bad night he'd occasionally nap up until he was 3.
No issues with bedtime for any of them. Bath, book, bedtime kisses, same routine as before. They used to be in bed by 7, asleep by half past. Bedtime is later now. DS is 4 and in bed by 7:45. My older two are 16 and 18 so I got to bed before them.

MeinKraft · 18/07/2024 09:23

Depends on the child,my eldest was starting school and my youngest was about 18 months, although she carried on having the odd impromptu sleep in the car for another year or more. I didn't really mind as bedtime became a lot easier and I like the 12-13 hours stretch at night.

LapinR0se · 18/07/2024 09:26

This is a really tricky nap transition

it’s time to drop the nap when it interferes with night time sleep eg a very delayed bedtime or early morning waking.

Most toddlers drop the nap between 2-3 yrs although some earlier around 20 months or later, even up to 4 yrs.
