How many hours of sleep do you get a night / day

Hi :)

just that really, I feel permanently exhausted at the moment and wondering how much sleep you manage to get in ?

I work 3 x 12 hour night shifts one week
and 4 x 12 hour night shift second week

I have carers in for eldest who also “ baby sit” younger 2 on the nights I work.
then the other nights I care for eldest needs which are awake shifts.
I sleep when the kids are at nursery / school.

on a work night it will look like this

leave for work 7.30 pm - start at 8 pm
finish work at 8 am and home by 8.45 and do the school / nursery run.
( round the corner )
home and asleep by 9.30 and awake at 2.30 to get up and ready to do school runs.

non work days that land on week days the same as above but doing eldests cares instead of working until she goes to school then sleep.

weekends - which is mainly 2 of my days off ( Friday and Saturday night ) I sleep inbetween her cares so around 10 pm - 12 am, then 3 am - 6 am when youngest wakes up.

so guess I’m averaging around 5 hours sleep.
this used to be okay but at the moment maybe due to getting older 🤣 I genuinely feel like I’m walking around asleep !!

Varies but usually 6-7 hours.

showersandflowers · 18/07/2024 06:17

Before kiddo was born, I'd say 6-7 hours. After, 8-10. We go to bed EARLY. Still traumatised by the newborn days of her only letting us sleep 2-3 hours so we take sleep very very seriously these days.

Hoglet70 · 18/07/2024 06:20

I'm old (as you can see from my username lol) but I try and get 8 if I can. I feel shattered with less. I had about 6 last night and I'll be asleep on my feet all day.

Esme20 · 18/07/2024 06:22

I aim for 8 but my sweet spot is 9!!

I’m a similar age, but a ‘good’ nights sleep for me is 5-6 hours. I also work long shifts but have no caring responsibilities outside of work.

I had a run of about 5 years of 2-3 hours sleep a night which was making me ill though.

MysteryofNils · 18/07/2024 06:26

I like to get 7-8 hours. The last few nights I've had 4-6 and am shattered!

Despite HRT and every sleep thing I can do to help, as I'm going through menopause, I'm waking up earlier and earlier and can't seem to stop it. At the moment, no matter what time I go to bed, I'm waking up at 430am.

I work full time and it's an absolute killer!

Devilsmommy · 18/07/2024 06:30

5 hours is about my usual but I'm an insomniac with a thyroid problem so sleeps been out the window lately

Overthebow · 18/07/2024 06:31

Currently around 4-5 hours as I have a baby who wake up in the night and an older child to get up for. I’m permanently tired at the moment, I need at least 7 hours really. I’m not surprised you’re tired with working nights, caring for your DC and only getting 5 hours sleep every day.

wickerlady · 18/07/2024 06:32

I get 8-9

I feel like I used to breeze through it
but think the 30s are hitting me hard 🤣

Average 5/6 Hours a Night maximum, but 4 DC and working doesn't allow for more! They're very early risers and there's always so much to do in the evenings, I don't go to bed until late.. been this way for years now 😴

MrsMorrisey · 18/07/2024 06:36

Oh your work shifts sound awful! That's hard. What is your job?

BonifaceBonanza · 18/07/2024 06:42

5 hours isn’t enough sleep for most people. Even occasionally it will affect your performance and how well you feel.
No doubt posters will come on to say they get 4 hours a night and go to the gym at 5am. Do not be fooled, everyone knows it’s very unusual to only need 5 hours sleep.
The question is what can you do about it?
Could you pay someone a couple of days a week to do the school runs? An extra hours sleep when you’re on nights is going to make a huge difference and will be worth the cost if affordable.
If it’s walking distance (say up to 30 mins) you could ask a teen instead of an adult driver, which will be cheaper for you.

Backtothedungeon · 18/07/2024 06:44

I'm surprised you were ever managing ok with that schedule. It sounds horrendous.

we have our review from CCG soon for eldest hours. I am going to try and push for an increase of 10 hours a week for an extra night shift so I can get one solid night but I’m not sure if we will be successful.

6-7 usually

if the birds wake me up at 4.30/5 I’ll stay awake for a bit then go back for another 2 or 3 hours but I’m retired so able to go for the 2 sleeps scenario, it works for me

I used to do a mixture of days and nights but always 3 x 1 week and 4 x one week. I did try Briefly changing roles to a 9-5 position for 5 days mon - Friday instead but I found at the time condensing the hours worked better because I had a solid 4 or 3 days off.

In my 30/40’s I used to get 9 hours, but now I’m in my 50’s I can’t seem to sleep longer than 7.

Beezknees · 18/07/2024 07:12

7-8 hours per night. But I work an office job with office hours. I couldn't manage on 5 hours.

SallyWD · 18/07/2024 07:33

That sounds really tough OP. I'd be like a zombie and get depressed. Lack of sleep really affects my mental health. Any chance you can change your job?
I'm 49 - I get between 7 and 8 hours a night. I don't feel good if it's closer to 7.

Muffin101 · 18/07/2024 07:57

That schedule is tough, I’m not surprised that you’re struggling and exhausted!!
I tend to do 8 hours, sometimes 9. Bed at 10/10:30 generally, up at 7 when my toddler charges in!
