.....who doesn't realise that he is past his prime and needs to leave it to someone else in the Democratic Party to run for the US presidency. Just like an octogenarian car driver, who insists that they are fit to drive, when everyone around them can see otherwise and it's up to their nearest and dearest to take away their car keys or report them to the DVLA.

Unfortunately, in the case of Joe Biden, he is wilfully refusing to listen to everyone telling him that if he tries for another term against Trump he will lose and give that awful man more power.

Today Biden said in an interview that only if a doctor told him he wasn't capable of standing would he listen. So, just like a lot of elderly drivers whose reflexes and reaction times are seriously on the decline , but won't listen until they have an accident, or worse, kill someone. I just despair!

I really despise Trump but Biden being totally unaware of his frailty is annoying me more at present and I can't quite believe anyone could annoy me more than Trump!

Manhere2024 · 18/07/2024 00:05

And now he has Covid!

Though I doubt it will cause him many issues. I’ve known an 86 year old catch it recently and he was fine. Alsp, Biden took Paxlovid straight away.

mayorofcasterbridge · 18/07/2024 00:08

The two dinosaurs need to go! I can't believe that in all of the US, these two elderly men are the best there is on offer! I can't bear the thought of another Trump presidency!

FuzzyStripes · 18/07/2024 00:09

I am hoping covid is an excuse to make a face saving exit from politics.

Fingers crossed but I doubt it!

I have resigned myself to a Trump victory this November. It's too late for Biden to resign now. He's been campaigning for more than a year now. Anyone who takes his place will not have the same name recognition that Biden has (apart from K. Harris and she's not very liked) and will only have months to get an election campaign up and running. They knew he was not fit but they kept insisting he was fine. They still think he'll win, but he's losing in all the swing states. It's game over. The window of opportunity has closed. Buckle up, we'll be in for another bumpy 4 years.

I didn't know that Biden now has Covid. So now there will be even more concerns regarding his frailty.

And this is why it is so frustrating. That the leaders of the Democratic Party did nothing to dissuade Biden from running for a second term in the first place. That they did not think ahead and ask themselves, is it reasonable to have an 84 or 85 year old, suffering ever more lapses in train of thought, forgetting peoples names, as the president of the US. That if Biden had a massive change of fortune and by some fluke did win, that by that age most people would assume that either his wife, sister or someone else close to him, is actually making the decisions, telling him what to do.

I completely agree. I'm so angry with Biden, I'm contacting all my representatives and asking them to join the chorus for him to step down.

Tragically - and I mean that in the truest sense of the word - if Trump wins in November, all bets are off. He won't leave office in a democratic fashion, and I believe the seeds of doing away with 2 terms will be sown almost immediately.

I agree that if Trump is elected, he and his supporters will want him to stay in power longer than four years. Given his stranglehold on the Republican Party and his many ardent supporters, I wouldn't put anything past him, especially after the 6th of January riot that he stoked up.

It’s all academic now, it doesn’t matter whether Biden steps aside or not, the election is already won. The damage has been done, so a slow handclap all round for Biden as we face four more years of Trump.

Topseyt123 · 18/07/2024 03:43

I took cannot believe that out of that whole vast country Biden and Trump are the best candidates on offer.

It's totally farcical.

Biden is irritating the fuck out of me with his bumbling and his stubborn refusal to step aside. I can't abide Trump either but the election victory is now almost certainly his and that is a worrying prospect.

So much of this could have been improved if only the Democrats had picked their candidate more wisely instead of backing the shit show that is increasingly Biden for so long.

You could, of course, say that the Republicans too have a horrendous candidate, and that's true. However, theirs is being handed victory on a plate and all they or Trump really have to do is sit back and let Biden and the Democrats get on with it.

If I personally had to make a choice between Biden or Trump on my ballot paper I really don't know what I would do. I simply couldn't vote for the god awful Trump at all, but Biden is hardly an inspiring alternative. I'd probably have to abstain, and I do not really believe in doing that because your vote is your main voice and in most countries in the world it was hard won.Decent and acceptable choices on the ballot paper are needed though.

I don't envy those who will have to make this shit choice.

RainintheDesert · 18/07/2024 06:08

I couldn't imagine working at Biden's age. Especially because it's a huge responsibility.

StJanetof · 18/07/2024 06:10

The stupidest thing is that this is Biden now - he won’t win but if he did, what will he be like in 4 years?

billysboy · 18/07/2024 06:32

It’s seems to be a tough job that would benefit from some youthful energy or at least a candidate below retirement age

SidekickSylvia · 18/07/2024 06:40

Biden doesn't even have a good vice president, in terms of there being a solid safety net if his health continues to deteriorate. I can't understand his reasoning at all, in not stepping down or changing his VP. Is it ego?

LlynTegid · 18/07/2024 06:44

It is sad to see, I hope he does decide not to be a candidate. He will lose anyway, an alternative Democrat candidate might win.

x2boys · 18/07/2024 06:51

He's the same age as my mum and Dad ,my Dad has declined rapidly over the past few years and myvmum is severely disabled anyway
Trump is only four years younger though!

needsomewarmsunshine · 18/07/2024 07:10

Good luck Dd emigrating to Trump land next month, you will probably need it with either of them in power.

BarryCantSwim · 18/07/2024 07:13

Totally agree OP. He’s also left it very late given there isn’t a clear candidate and potentially in fighting within the Democrats further weakens their case.

TheaBrandt · 18/07/2024 07:18

I find the democrats behaviour really weird. It’s like they are in a mass delusion that the aging process won’t affect their candidate. 3 out of 4 of my grandparents died aged 84. He looks ridiculous and offering trump victory on a plate.

Well let's see, he said he'd leave the race if diagnosed with a medical condition which is a climb down. 1 day later he has COVID. So this could be his exit strategy. There are some great alternatives in the wings. Let's hope for the best.

Apparently the shooting didn't change the polls to increase a Trump vote so it's still anyone's to win.

When you say no solid VP is that because of comments you've read online? That's an idea Trump is pushing but she's actually extremely talented and capable. But there are great other candidates too that poll better. Kamala is not white and she's female so surprise, she doesnt poll that well amongst certain sectors of the American population but she's excellent at what she does.
