What’s wrong with my mum

Hemakesmesmile2 · 17/07/2024 22:37

She has a doctor’s appointment in a few days but was wondering if anyone can relate to these symptoms my
poor mum is suffering from. For
context she’s mid 60s and done with the menopause, is slightly overweight but has lost a tonne the healthy way-exercise and healthy eating. Her diet is incredibly healthy.
symptoms are-
very itchy, dry skin and dry hair.
aching joints
always cold
not sleeping (averaging about 4 hours a night)
easily irradiated (no doubt made worse by lack of sleep)
depression (she says it’s different to her usual depression which is long standing)
keeps crying at everything for no reason
loss of appetite (she’s recently lost a lot of sense of taste and lost her sense of smell years ago-but can smell some things very infrequently)

she thinks she’s had these symptoms about a year but they have got progressively worse.

Maybe thyroid problems.

Me too

If it is thyroid, it's easily sorted.

Aquamarine1029 · 17/07/2024 22:44

Thyroid is my very first thought. She may also be deficient with some vitamins and minerals.

unkownone · 17/07/2024 22:44

Yep first thought thyroid. Even if it’s slightly off.

Emmadaily · 17/07/2024 22:44

Hi O P.
My thoughts are under active thyroid function
Easily diagnosed and easily treated

Hope your mum.goes on ok x

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 17/07/2024 22:44

Could vit B deficiency especially if dieting

My mother recently had all those symptoms and had actually had a small stroke.

Nothankyou22 · 17/07/2024 22:46

Could be iron, thyroid or another vitamin deficiency but a blood test will hopefully help determine what’s going on

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 17/07/2024 22:49

She might well have an under active thyroid but sounds like a typical post menopausal symptoms. Hopefully blood tests will find the problem

Feeling cold all the time? Menopause?

Seriously, I didn't have to read further than the first few lines before having my typing fingers ready.

very itchy, dry skin and dry hair.
aching joints
always cold

I've been there, and am on thyroxine.

So am I. I think you'll find there's a lot of crossover

DramaAlpaca · 17/07/2024 23:34

Yep, like everyone else I suspect thyroid issues.

L1ttledrummergirl · 17/07/2024 23:44

Low iron and vit b12 levels do that to me.

FuzzyStripes · 17/07/2024 23:46

Another vote for thyroid. Hopefully she can have some blood tests arranged quickly to get some answers.

Mercury2702 · 17/07/2024 23:47

I’ve also got an underactive thyroid, I’m a nurse also and my first thoughts were thyroid! Other deficiencies can cause similar symptoms too such as B12

JohnTheRevelator · 18/07/2024 00:06

Under active thyroid.

Runsyd · 18/07/2024 00:07

Another vote for underactive thyroid. It screws up everything.

101Nutella · 18/07/2024 00:12

I’d check vit D, ferritin , b12 too aswell as thyroid.

get a copy of the results to check the tests have been performed and she isn’t low. I was anaemic but told I was ‘normal’.

I have an under active thyroid post op for graves. Classic symptoms OP. Please get her to opt for a blood test and then if medicated should feel better fairly quickly

PollyPeep · 18/07/2024 00:29

Underactive thyroid. Easily managed with a daily tablet.

Hemakesmesmile2 · 18/07/2024 08:27

Thanks so much for your messages. She’s all done with the menopause. You’ve all said exactly what she’s thinking it is-an under active thyroid. Hopefully they can get her meds asap because she is feel rotten. Thanks again.

Is she pale? She could be anaemic. Does she have any serious symptoms like blood loss or unintentional weight loss?
