To get a 4 year old skates

DD is coming up to 4 and for her birthday is desperate for roller skates after seeing them on a TV, it's the only thing she is consistently asking for.

Obviously she will have a helmet, knee and elbow pads, but I fear she is going to brake her neck.

I have seen these ones at argos that look okay, but then I'm concerned she won't like them as they are not proper skates.

Two of my daughters were ice-skating regularly by 4. It's good for balance and coordination, as well as being fun exercise.

Do it.

Outandabout43 · 17/07/2024 21:05

@Meowzabub would you recommend skates or roller blades?

Well, if she wants skates get her skates. Overall, the benefits are largely the same. I'd suggest investing a bit in well fitting ones though as they do up tight on the foot and you don't want it doing any damage

I loved my roller skates as a little one, probably about her age. They were from Fisher Price and size adjustable, and went over normal shoes. Back then there was no helmet / pads etc. and I survived! About age 7 I got roller boots that were fluorescent yellow with black stars on! Great memories!

Crazycatlady79 · 17/07/2024 21:27

I've put YABU, as there is no way I'd have got my 4 year old cheap, shit skates from Argos.
I'm poor AF, but saved and saved to be able to buy decent skates and protective gear from a skate specialist.
Nowt wrong with getting a 4 year old skates; mine twins had them at 4 and skateboards at 3. They haven't broken their necks, or any bones!

Outandabout43 · 17/07/2024 21:28

I just saw them and looked like they where more stable, would you recommend skate hut? They have ones in there with larger back wheels, or should I just get her standard roller skates?

Roller skates she should be fine in. Roller blades might be a little harder, but I see plenty of kids that age ice skating so clearly possible (mine is too scared to let go of the skate aid, but he can walk about in ice skates with no problem).

CormorantStrikesBack · 17/07/2024 21:36

Where is she going to skate? If it’s outside you need decent skates with wheels which can cope with non smooth tarmac/concrete. I certainly wouldn’t get her cheap tri skates. Does she want roller skates or blades?

Outandabout43 · 17/07/2024 21:38

She wants roller skates, I know nothing of roller skates apart from having some in the 90s when Bauers where the height if fashion

Outandabout43 · 17/07/2024 21:38

And yes, will be outside.

Roller skates as that's what she wants AND they're easier.

id definitely buy 'better' ones. They'll fit better (more control) & be more comfortable.

personally I liked the ones that were like trainers, just bought the ones my goddaughter wanted which look like ice skates on wheels 🤣🤣

DD is unlikely to break anything anymore than she would running, as at 4 doors doesn't really come into it!🤣

CormorantStrikesBack · 17/07/2024 21:40

These look a good price, they have a 78a wheel so will be a bit softer, so roll a bit slower and good grip so great for learning. www.skatehut.co.uk/lmnade-throwback-quad-roller-skates.htm www.skatehut.co.uk/lmnade-throwback-quad-roller-skates.htm]]]]

Outandabout43 · 17/07/2024 21:42

Omg @CormorantStrikesBack they are so vinted, I love them!!!! Although she is only shoe size 9 junior

All my dcs had roller blades at 4. Decathlon sell slower wheeled ones. They all got on fine. However they're very ' daredevil ' and even falling loads at 1st didn't phase them.

ZeroFucksGivenToday · 17/07/2024 21:44

Try quads rather than rollerblades.
Rio rollers do a great range for younger kids. I'd get on Facebook market place. You'll pick up practically a new pair from there as they grow out of them so fast.

If you have a rink near you have a look at lessons. It's a great age to start now and most places have lessons for kids that young.

I still skate at over 40, my daughter had lessons and we have a great time going to the rink. Although she now leaves me for dead at speed and tricks now.

MumonabikeE5 · 17/07/2024 21:47

My then four year old saw ice skating, and decided she wanted to learn. Fortunately discovered lessons nearby, and now she can skate backwards, and do all sorts of techniques.
she has roller skates too now.

so I’d say go for it, get the skates.

find smooth places to practice.
wear wrist guards and bike helmet (my kid wears a bike helmet on ice, even though no one else does)
(although the greenstixk fracture she did falling from a climbing frame was fixed in 3 weeks)

ZeroFucksGivenToday · 17/07/2024 21:50

Oh yes. As previous poster said. Wrist guards are absolutely mandatory. My daughter doesn't wear any other gear now, but I still make her wear them.

Lokielo · 17/07/2024 21:54

For a junior size 9 choice is going to be really limited. SRF Storm or SRF Stomper (if you want to go a bit slower) are good quality and come in adjustable sizes that would fit her.

Moonlaserbearwolf · 17/07/2024 21:56

I recommend Roller Derby 1978-03 Youth Girls Firestar Roller Skates

We’ve tried a few different ones and these are nice and light, but durable. Not too slippy. We tried the Rio roller skates and found them too heavy and slippy for my then 7 year old.

whoami24601 · 17/07/2024 22:07

Where are you and what size is she? I have a pair of decent roller skates I bought by accident and have no idea what to do with! If you're local you are welcome to them.

whoami24601 · 17/07/2024 22:08

These!
