Becoming homeless for my dream job

ForTidyFinch · 17/07/2024 08:20

I've been offered and ideal job in the town where I currently live but my short term tenancy is due to end in a couple of weeks. I have tried everything to find a new place to live. There is nothing available in this small town and I have no friends or family living close enough to help. I have decided to start the job and then live in my car. I've reached a desperate point now where I think there is little chance of me being able to rent privately even if something does become available. A run of bad luck has drained my finances and a CCJ was taken out against me without my knowledge (for overstaying in a service station when my car was broken down!) This was taken out while I was living abroad and I have only just found out. So there goes the chance of renting privately. So the choice I see it is being homeless and destitute staying with relatives or living in my car and starting this interesting job opportunity. I think I will live in my car. WWYD

Your best bet is to find a room as a lodger. I’d print leaflets and deliver them house by house.

I'd look on places like spare room.com and Airbnb for room to rent or flat share situations rather than sleeping in your car. It soon gets damp and your clothes start to smell musty after a while. Depending on where you are I'd perhaps look at a longer term booking on a campsite (get a large, stand up 6-8 berth tent and access to shower and laundry facilities)

This is a good idea about the campsite

At the risk of sounding like a snob, I'm not sure I would want someone who is homeless staying in my house...

How would you know? Although you do have to pay to sign up to pet sitting websites as a sitter so OP may not have funds or consider this a good use of money when the house sitting jobs aren’t guaranteed.

Reallyquitejaded · 17/07/2024 13:33

Are there any friends or family you could spend weekends with? Some people are happier renting out rooms Monday morning to Friday afternoon if they know you’re out at work all day. Possibly worth asking on a local Facebook group? I have seen listings where it says you can stay from Monday evening until Friday morning.

Gosh, no, don't buy a very cheap boat!

Definitely agree don't live in a crap boat or any of the other issues described by the very knowledgeable PP. But, for a few months until word of mouth can find you something else, there might be a possibility of a short let on one that isn't online of a completely acceptable boat that isn't being used for holidays at present, or that owner isn't using for a while.

Another possibility is something like Property Guardians or Housesitting. I think encouraging OP away from mad dangerous ideas and towards lateral thinking for actually quite good short and medium term solutions is the great thing about this thread.

That's a ridiculous thing to say

It's not ridiculous at all - it's a "thing".

This makes no sense whatsoever. Your car just passed its MOT but now it’s not working? Well it needs fixing surely? As a priority. Then you need to get a map and look at places less than two hours away and drive to blooming work. I don’t understand why it’s so difficult.

The car is damage beyond repair.. I explained that in previous posts.

When I was looking to rent in the small village I'm in now, there was nothing on the online sites. But, in the village shop the notice board had quite a few rooms /houses to let.

The landlord we eventually got just wanted someone with ties to the area, someone local, someone who worked locally or someone who knew a local to rent to.

So maybe check out a few notice boards in the town or village your job is in, you might get lucky that way.

serialcatbuyer · 17/07/2024 13:36

I think you will be fine and it will pass. Take the job.

user1471538283 · 17/07/2024 13:37

Try Spare Room? If there's a university you could rent a spare room for a while? Or a hostel?

WilfredDidNotStealYourSausages · 17/07/2024 13:37

PP, if OP used her family address as her base, which is quite legitimate, and then offered house sitting in the area she wants to do this job in, you as the client would be none the wiser as to her personal circumstances, as it should be.

The main thing is the references that she is a responsible person to do it. Housesitting and pet sitting can be for a week up to many months OP.

Where are these magical house-sitting jobs that last for weeks and months on end and don't require you to be around during the day to care for the animals?

It absolutely can and does, most Landlords will not rent to people who have been evicted through the courts.

Yes, the council give the "stay put" advice, however, this is not official, and it is actually unlawful advice, as has been proven in a court of law, when Landlords have taken councils to court for this advice.

You may "know this", from your own personal experience, but you seem unaware that this is UNLAWFUL. I know this, as I'm a Landlord, and have seen the black and white evidence of the court cases.

Well tell that to your fellow landlords and councils, not me!

I stand by my advice. If OP would like help from the council, she has to follow the official advice or they will not help her and she will have to sleep in her car. It’s a shitty, broken process but when you’re up shit creek you do what you have to do to get your crumb of help.

@ForTidyFinch I get that you feel the CCJ was unfair as your car had broken down, but had you actually given your registration to the hotel or service station management to get your registration logged as an exemption at the time? Because, if you didn't, then the CCJ was not unfair.

My car also broke down somewhere with a 90min parking limit. The first thing I did after calling the break down service was go to the manager of the shop and get my registration logged for an exemption.

You might be able to get it set aside on a technicality of them not having the correct address for you though. But if not, you really do need to pay this off, otherwise, you'll struggle with your credit rating for a long time.

Yes I did all this I notified the service station then also sent the breakdown report by email. They said they would sort it. I went abroad for some months and had my post redirected. I feel maybe the redirection failed as when my friend handed over the post only one letter relating to it. It will be removed as I am at no way at fault and I have the evidence that I immediately emailed them the breakdown report on their own instructions.

None of this makes sense outside your own head OP. You live in a town large enough to have a thriving tourist economy, a leisure centre, and all amenities you need to live yet not a single property available to rent on Rightmove or room to rent on SpareRoom or Gumtree in months; you’re planning on going to stay with family at weekends so you don’t have to spend them in your car but your car doesn’t work, so how are you going to get to them? You don’t seem to think it’s going to be noticed that your clothes will be unwashed and untidy because you’ve no laundry or hanging facilities. MN can’t convince you do you need to speak to a good friend who can point out that it’s just not going to work, you aren’t going to be able to hold down a job and live in a broken down car at the side of the road.

ForTidyFinch · 17/07/2024 09:35

Towed why? It's not illegally parked. This is a small town surrounded by countryside not a big city. You can legally park most places.

You need valid tax, MOT and insurance to park legally.

Most places also have restrictions on sleeping in cars - you can't just park on a random residential street and sleep there Confused

Name change and start a new thread in Chat and relevant loxal sites saying looking for temp accommodation in Mousehole /Wells next the Sea or wherever.

I'm glad to hear there is light at the end of the tunnel.after a CCJ. I won't be paying it of however - it was unfairly applied after my car broke down and so overstayed at a service station

It’s unlucky but not unfair.
I pulled into a service station with a puncture. Called the AA first, then second went to check if I’d need to buy a ticket based on their estimate of arrival exceeding the free hours.
Given that an unsatisfied CCJ can literally stop you renting, you’re cutting your nose off to spite your face when you were in the wrong anyway.

I think now is the time to make the move away from an area with sounds like it will be constantly problematic for jobs, housing and transport.

No I was not in the wrong. You haven't read all my posts only that reply it seems. Just because you were in the wrong doesn't mean I was. Your like the fifth person to say this. There was no option to pay for additional parking. I informed the service station and the company that handles the parking.

Your title suggests you are becoming homeless for a dream job.
Apologies if I misunderstood but aren't you going to be homeless anyway? Not because you take a job.
It's not a choice if your letting is ending.
Might as well take the job.

JMSA · 17/07/2024 13:49

If you can't afford a campsite, then I fail to see how this is a dream job.
I'm really sorry. I don't mean to piss on your chips. But the situation is surely untenable.

Dinoswearunderpants · 17/07/2024 13:50

If you live in a popular tourist town, have you looked into house sitting options? You might have to move around a bit but certainly better than your car.

You need to present yourself homeless asap to your local authority.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 17/07/2024 13:51

You've said staying in a caravan would be too expensive. But would it really be a lot more than your current monthly rent (which presumably is very high given the huge demand for rooms in your area)? Certainly worth looking into as a short-term solution.

Have you ever looked for a similar job in another area? What's keeping you where you are? You don't seem to have family or friends there and housing's more or less impossible.

Tartfulodger · 17/07/2024 13:54

ForTidyFinch · 17/07/2024 13:34

The car is damage beyond repair.. I explained that in previous posts.

In which case it won't be roadworthy. A car that doesn't run can't pass an MOT.

I know. Sadly I think OP is being a little naive.
