AIBU to phone in sick?

Tomorrow i undergo an hysteroscopy, after abnormal ultra-sound and endometrial hyperplasia. as i'm post menopause, its been made very clear to me that this COULD mean cancer. it also COULD be something less sinster.

I've had a turbulent 4 weeks while i've undergone tests and this past 2 weeks waiting for this appointment has not been great.

I'm having the procedure done on my day off work, quite late in the evening and I'm very tempted to ring in sick for the following day, my theory is, its either going to be good news or its going to be bad and emotionally i do not know where i am going to land?

I have worked through all of this without question. My line manager is aware of the situation but not very sympathetic.

AIBU by taking the following day as a sick day, to compose myself basically?

See how you feel on the day but no, in these circumstances I don’t think it’s unreasonable.

Offcom · 16/07/2024 20:36

Make like you’re a millennial and take the day off for stress (I really hope you need it to recover from the champagne headache you get from celebrating the all clear)

Kitkat1523 · 16/07/2024 20:38

I would take the day off to recover defo…but will you be actually told there and then ? Won’t they have to do a biopsy or something?

Despair1 · 16/07/2024 20:42

I am sure you will need the day off to recover. You may be in discomfort and will have had an anaesthetic.

i'm not going to lie, i really don't know. I kind of assumed they would have a look and be able to tell me whats what?

hadn't thought of that! had pinned all my hopes on tomorrow

I’ve had this procedure done twice and both times I wasn’t given any results.
The biopsy is sent to histology for testing and you will likely have a follow up clinic appointment.

If you aren’t offered pain relief prior to the procedure then do ask for some. You may be fobbed off but it is an uncomfortable (at best) procedure.

Best wishes OP, it’s a worrying time for you 💐

vipersnest1 · 16/07/2024 20:46

Just phone in and say you're too sore from the procedure to go in to work - and if you need to take the next day too.
IME no-one will tell you you've been noble for going in, so don't do it if you don't want to.
I hope all ends well for you.

Actupfishy · 16/07/2024 20:49

Sorry it's been a worrying time for you..
just as a note there are 4 types of hyperplasia (2 not pre cancerous)

I would take the time off, you'll be uncomfortable and crampy, make sure you take pain relief before the procedure (I had the same procedure done a while back) I was told during the procedure it didn't look sinister so you could get some relief tomorrow.
either way, take day off x

roundspongecake · 16/07/2024 20:50

See how you feel on the day.

KreedKafer · 16/07/2024 20:55

Regardless of whether you’ll get any news the next day, you would be well within your rights to call in sick the day after that kind of procedure. You might be in some discomfort, or have slept badly or whatever, and if I were your line manager I’d assume you might not be able to work for that reason alone.

Fingers crossed for a good result and hopefully the main reason you’ll need time off is because you’re overwhelmed by the massive sense of relief you’ll have when you get the all-clear x

gabsdot45 · 16/07/2024 20:57

If you can take time off do it.

I had a hysteroscopy on my lunch break once and went straight back to work.
So stupid of me. Take care of yourself. That's the priority.

Portfun24 · 16/07/2024 21:20

Take it off. I had gynae treatment in August and didn't rest and paid the price. I had a biopsy and it took 6 weeks for results, hopefully your area will be quicker but just to prepare you that you may not get instant clarification. Edited to add, good luck hope all goes well and they don't need to even biopsy anything and it's good news.

JokoKitten · 16/07/2024 21:31

Warn your work you may take the day off if you are comfortable doing so and the see how it goes.
You might feel fine.
The fact you haven't needed to take time off so far shouldn't make any difference to how you feel about taking the day off.

Best of luck. I hope everything goes well.

CountryMumof4 · 16/07/2024 23:18

Like PP, I'd give your employer a heads up that you may not feel up to work the following day, which is completely understandable. I don't think you'd get results straight away, particularly if they're sending biopsies away for testing. Just do what you feel able to do. It's a stressful time for you, and you may need some down time to recover and process. Wishing you the very best of luck x

so a little update.... procedure all done, the consultant was male and if i do say so myself, he was very dismissive!

said that nothing out of order was on my ultra-sound so wasn't expecting to find anything and that the pain i was experiencing was nothing to do with my uterus and probably my bowel and that i should go back to the GP for a referral as he doesnt deal with bowels... all before he even looked at me!

anyway... he has a poke about, and hey presto he finds what he believes to be a polyp!.. takes a biopsy, all without any Anesthesia. then calls in another bloke who says he can remove it now with Local Anaesthetic!! absolutely not! it was bad enough his flippant attitude. I asked him how big the polyp was and he holds his fingers up and indicates the size of a 10p piece.

so, he's taken a biopsey, filled some forms in and sent me on my way! is it just me or are women better at this type of thing?

You are not wrong - I have come across so many men HCPs who have no clue how painful some procedures can be - and, like you have found, pre-judge because it isn't in their realm of experience so cannot believe the pain can exist.
My worst experience to date was a flexi-sig (similar to colonoscopy) with no pain relief. I mentioned I had had multiple laparoscopies and endometriosis (so a huge risk for scar tissue which can cause more pain). I rated my pain at a 10+ and ended up writing the one and only letter of complaint I have ever sent to the NHS. The doctor's score? 2. Unbelievable. 🤬
