Blinds with long chords - holiday - 2 year old

Is there anything I can do ( except keeping an even closed eye ) on my two year old.

I arrived yesterday and didn't realise that the blinds in our holiday house have these very long chords.

I'm sure there's a simple solution I have not even thought about.

He's sleeping in bed with me but I just kept waking up all night worrying he'd got up and I didn't notice and he hurt himself.

I'm scared to go outside in the pool while he's napping now, in case he wakes up and something happens with these chords. Any ideas please ?

Are you sure there are no breakers in them? My ILs have long cord blinds but there are breakers in them. But you're right just tie them out of the way

Sorry if this has been posted but are you sure they aren’t safety cords. We had blinds fitted and they had long cords. I was really worried but when I questioned the blind company it turns out they fall off if any weight is put on them (so not dangerous)?

I pulled them quite hard and it didn't snap off or anything so I doubt it. I'll post a pic. I've now made a mess of them, as you can see.

Did you genuinely not consider any of these solutions yourself?

Cactiverde · 16/07/2024 16:04

Yeah just double thr cord over itself almost into a knot at the top and then they can't be reached? We have blinds with long cords in our house, and when mine were younger, and now when my nephew comes over this is what we do.

I did think about trying to tie it up, but didn't really want to, as I was worried and still am- that I won't be able to untie it and will get charged for breaking it.

The other thing I thought of doing is get sellotape and try to stick it up.

So yes thanks for your very helpful comment. I did think about it. But knowing that there will be many others on here who've actually experienced this before, I thought I would ask if there's anything I haven't thought of.

I suppose I was looking for the wisdom of others.

A wise man never knows it all, only a fool knows everything..

Hmmmm. I might be wrong but I think those silver ball strings are designed to break. Can you tuck the string over where the roller goes for extra precaution?

I wouldn't leave my 2 year old unattended with those either, but tbf I wouldn't leave them and go swimming either so I might be more cautious then some 😊

You probably would here, unless you're never in another room when your child naps ?

The layout is such that the pool is facing the room he's sleeping in directly and I can see and even hear him from the pool.

Also my mum is on a sun lounger between his window, and the pool. It's extremely close by, otherwise I wouldn't do it either, as I also like to be very careful with my kids.

Hard to say without being there really!

I have 4 kids so obviously leave them unattended when it's safe. Tbf, we normally hire a travel cot for my youngest 2 but one of us would have a chill on the balcony or a nap themselves whilst the other parent would take the older kids to swim/play/beach whatever.

Hope you're having a great holiday

I was literally stood next to my niece and watched her trip and some how get the cord around her neck at my parents house.. fortunately she was fine, but I have no idea quite how she managed to do it - get the cords out of the way, even if you do get charged for tangling them..

Edited to add - this was years ago when the problem was only just being highlighted and my parents obviously made sure they were out of the way after this.

Ooh that's scary! So glad she was OK!

Thank you @Greenlittecat - it was surreal, she sort of tripped and went head first through the loop! I hate the damned things and have cut the ones in our house. The local coroner sent a leaflet to all new parents in our county about 14 years ago warning about them, straightners and nappy sacks when she had seen a rise in deaths from all 3!

Put them in a carrier bag and tie the handles round the roller part of the blind then they won’t get all tangled.

I hope this doesn’t sound unkind but did you really need a thread to tell you to just tie them up out of the way? You seem very worried about a few things. If you’re struggling with anxiety, do talk to people. Not for reassurance about the things your worrying about, but the anxiety itself.

You could try keeping both eyes open… 🤣
