I hate them, the stress, the hope, the anticipation and the inevitable disappointment

They are just awful and I dont enjoy them one bit.

Never have. I'm 53 now and have done my share. Every 2 years FFS

No stress for me, when I was in my teens / early 20's I was interested but now almost 50 and couldn't give a toss, my husband and friends watched it while i read in the garden while eating a cheeseboard 😂

I get quite triggered around people displaying extreme emotions to things that feel out of place.

The screaming and the crying and people hitting tables and swearing makes me uncomfortable so I just go to bed (luckily my husband doesnt do these things to a scary degree, although he does get very passionate lol) or my DH goes to the pub to be around other fans.

I feel worried about how the domestic violence rates skyrocket and I honestly think a lot of football fans display pretty awful behaviour in general that wouldn't be accepted in any other circumstance.

The fights, the racism, the fear of some women around the UK.

I'm not saying that it's a bad thing to be a fan but I do think it's almost a cult like frenzy and more needs to be done around education and teaching young men especially on how to channel anger and frustration in regards to sports... which although I understand is important to many people... IS just sports.

It's not really the sport that's the problem, it's alcohol. The reason domestic abuse goes up during matches is because of drinking. It increases whether the team win or lose.

The UK has a problem with booze. But in my opinion, if someone is going to abuse their partner, they don't really need an excuse.

I get sick of it, because the amount of sport, particularly football, shown on TV, seems to assume that the whole nation WANT to watch it, when I'm sure there are many like me and my DH, who couldn't give a toss, and would sooner turn the TV off than watch sport. I just don't get this fervour for watching men chasing a ball around a piece of grass.

Thats If you’re assuming the only problem people have with them is the violence. That’s horrific and enough to make me think it should all be downplayed. It’s not the only issue though.
I object to it being all over the tv and radio and news endlessly too. I couldn’t care less about it and it bores me. They put lots of sports on the red button. Why can’t they do that with football, except for maybe the semis and the final if a home nation is involved?

SleepEatSnoozeRepeat · 15/07/2024 00:02

It was a good excuse for me to disappear upstairs and read a book.

I also worry about the domestic violence figures. Terrifying.

I was responding to the post above me which talked about football and domestic abuse.

For many people the major tournaments such as the World Cup and Euros, are a very big deal and they want coverage of it. Football is our national sport. The World Cup and Euros are on every four years and the Euros only lasts four weeks.

It's easy enough to avoid watching any matches.

Fleethatbee · 15/07/2024 00:07

I've loved watching the matches at my local - but I do appreciate that all pubs aren't as nice as my local (the food provided at half time was awesome too)

Aquamarine1029 · 15/07/2024 00:08

I have always considered myself very fortunate that my husband couldn't give a fuck about football. My dad never did, either.
