to think it's a bit cheeky that a pregnancy magazine's prize for letters is a breast pump?

Sorry if it's been done before, was reading a pg magazine today (Mother and Baby?) and the prize for having a letter printed is a breast pump.

What if you ff? What if you can't express?

There are so many items they could have this just seems a little bit weird to me.

But then I could be being unreasonable, I guess it could be sold (unlikely to get full price for it though).

do they have different prizes for each issue

edam · 11/04/2008 20:33

The prize is donated by a manufacturer or retailer. So I guess it's all they could get atm. Must have been a bad month for the marketing guys.

expatinscotland · 11/04/2008 20:34

flog it here or on Ebay.

i'll buy it off you, my used Medela finally packed it in.

even if you sold it, still getting a prize of sorts, and the best kind: FREE money.

Saveme · 11/04/2008 20:35

Good point about sponsors, but shouldn't their readership matter more? I've got about 4 months issues and they've all got the medela swing breast pump in it (which, incidentally, I intend to buy, maybe I should write a letter).

expat, would you like my medela

Saveme · 11/04/2008 20:35

I can't flog it expat, I don't have one.

expatinscotland · 11/04/2008 20:36

i inherited moondog's old one, which was GREAT.

it did DD2 well. but now the motor is . . . RIP [sob].

expatinscotland · 11/04/2008 20:37

how much are you looking for, tutter?

i'm in the market for one!

Tutter · 11/04/2008 20:39

zilch, expat, it's yours

my work here is done

email me your address at mrs dot tutter at hotmail dot co dot uk

FourPlusOne · 11/04/2008 20:39

No more annoying than when you sign up for any sort of baby thing (in bounty packs, boots card etc) you get money off or free disposable nappies. Don't want them and don't use them, but you never get offered a free cloth one! It's just all about marketing and sponsorship.

Just don't write them a letter if you don't like the prize!

expatinscotland · 11/04/2008 20:40

that's ace, tutter.

i'll email just now whilst DH is engrossed in 'Storm Chasers'.

VictorianSqualor · 11/04/2008 20:42

Sorry to come on talking about breast pumps but I won one of the MAM ones, but have bought an electric one instead so I have that if anyone wants it.

lackaDAISYcal · 11/04/2008 20:44

......VS have you had that baby yet?

VictorianSqualor · 11/04/2008 20:45

Nope. 2 days over.

lackaDAISYcal · 11/04/2008 20:46

are you still on for your VBAC?

VictorianSqualor · 11/04/2008 20:52

I have til tuesday, when I'll be 41 weeks, then it's a cut and shut, so am hoping baby decides to come soon as.

expatinscotland · 11/04/2008 20:55

OUT OUT VS's baby!

VictorianSqualor · 11/04/2008 21:02

Maybe add a little labour dance and some magic spells to the chanting expat.
I'd be eternally greatful

lackaDAISYcal · 11/04/2008 21:02

sending you big labour vibes before Tuesday then

C'mon babyVS....you can do it!

edam · 11/04/2008 21:49

Saveme, the company that sponsors the letters page tends to sign up for blocks of months - usually four/six/twelve. If I was the editor, I would be bloody irritated for the obvious reasons - potential irritation to ff/non-expressing mothers, lack of appeal to those mothers etc. etc. But sometimes the marketing people are useless. Or the dept. could be woefully understaffed - if it is M&B they've just been sold to a new publisher so maybe jobs have been cut?

ReallyTired · 11/04/2008 23:17

Well.. whatever prize they offered there would be someone who didn't want it.

If you have issues about breastfeeding its your problem not the magezine. Its not as if you have won the competition.

You might have the Gina Ford followers objecting if a baby sling was the prize. You would have the continium concept parents complaining if the prize was a cot.

What the the second time parents who already got all the baby junk they need and would prefer cash? What the Dads who might object that they would never be able to use a breast pump? They might prefer a football so that they can teach their toddler the noble game.

There was a competition in my son's comic for a nintendo Wii. I do not5 want my son to have a Nintendo Wii or any other games console. However since the chances of him winning are about a million to one, I am not worrying.

Saveme · 12/04/2008 11:03

"Just don't write them a letter if you don't like the prize!"

Yes, I can see it's a great marketing strategy to alienate a huge proportion of your readership.

Still, if they have "issues" with breastfeeding then f*ck em, it's their problem eh?
