Teachers - what end of year gift would you like?

Hi all,

We have had a few issues at school throughout the year in terms of behaviour with my child. The teacher is lovely and has been invaluable in providing support with the issues we have faced and have gone above and beyond in many ways.

The class have chipped in for a present from all the children but I would like to them something separate as a genuine thanks for all of their support.

As a teacher, what is a gift you would genuinely like to receive or something you have previously received that you liked.

Thanks!

I've kept every single card or note I've got. So for me something as simple as a note saying that I'm appreciated is enough!

lunaloo56 · 12/07/2024 18:47

@Stressedoutforever that's lovely, I was going to write a nice card and say thank you etc but just wanted something else to go either way

Wine or chocolate. Nothing personalised.

Iceache · 12/07/2024 18:49

I don’t want presents but my favourite has to be beer and crisps 😂 My male jobshare used to get this and I’d get rosé (which I don’t drink) so we’d swap 😂 I also love getting a big bar of chocolate!

I buy my children’s teachers a nice plant or tins of biscuits or a nice bottle of wine if I think they’ll drink it

mraladdinsir · 12/07/2024 18:49

Somethings which can easily be regifted, not wine as never know what alcohol issues someone faces in private. Gift voucher for school shop/stationary shop always greatly received or Amazon.

lunaloo56 · 12/07/2024 18:50

Alcohol is a funny because how do you pick one they might like? It's such a minefield 🤣🤣

Can you just do a general voucher / One4all so they can decide whether they want to use it for supplies etc. or just a few takeaways or new shoes

lunaloo56 · 12/07/2024 18:51

Hmm I'm thinking maybe a nice card with a heartfelt thanks, maybe like a boots voucher so they can treat themselves? And a big slab of chocolate?

@loropianalover maybe that's a better idea than just a boots voucher actually

Perfect.

I would love a note, a card, a spoken "thank you for..." anything made, written, drawn by the children.

Those are the things I cherish. Booze, coffee vouchers, chocs and biscuits are nice - and I ALWAYS appreciate any gift at all - but honestly, the cards or notes or quiet words that take time to think about and effort to convey. They're the things that always resonate and make me happy.

TodayForTomorrow · 12/07/2024 18:52

A card or email is always the most precious, but if you must buy something then I don't think you can go too far wrong with some nice stationery. Posh highlighters or some nice gel pens in whatever colour they mark in.

GruntledGoblin · 12/07/2024 18:55

Just to add that I suggested my DS email all of his teachers and thank them for teaching him this year - with specific examples of what he'd enjoyed and valued in each subject. Every one of them sought him out and thanked him personally. It really is incredibly touching to receive a heartfelt thank you

petitdonkey · 12/07/2024 18:56

I received the loveliest present this year- it was a book, a novel, but wrapped really beautifully, all folded with sticky notes, a bookmark, some pens, coffee etc all tucked in. It was in a bag with some chocolate too. The time and effort that went into it was really touching. The same family made a goodie bag at Christmas with a mug, some biscuits, a desk planner etc in. Really thoughtful.

All teachers love stationery too! I once got a monster packet of sharpies and was over the moon!!

UtterlyOtterly · 12/07/2024 19:05

It is a sad sign of the state of our schools but a primary school teacher I know was overjoyed to receive two dozen glue sticks. They came with a heartfelt note too.

Mostlycarbon · 12/07/2024 19:13

Wine, chocolate, a plant. Anything to be honest!

Sauercat · 12/07/2024 19:14

Love the idea of emailing senior school teachers

ClonedSquare · 12/07/2024 19:14

As a teacher, no gift at all was necessary. A heartfelt card would have been appreciated.

If you did really insist on a gift, anything but personalised mugs/stationery/bags/jewellery etc would be appreciated. Teachers aren't ungrateful, but they get dozens of those things and they're rarely to your personal taste. Flowers are a bit impractical, especially if you're not certain they have a car.

All the standard consumable gifts are fine, unless you know they would specifically have an issue with something. Wine is a risky one but chocolates, biscuits, fancy tea or coffee etc are all good and can be regifted if the teacher doesn't want them themself. A voucher could also be good, I’d go for somewhere generic like John Lewis or Next as that covers fashion, homewares, toiletries etc.

I'd be over the moon with that ❤️

lunaloo56 · 12/07/2024 19:17

@ClonedSquare this is exactly why I asked. Anything personalised just seems abit like tatt to me and not something I would want (obviously each to their own) and don't want to waste money on something that they won't actually want.

I'm going to do chocolate, a voucher, a heartfelt card and possibly some stationary!

Thank you all for your help!

As a teacher, the best present I could get is an appreciative email ( explaining what the parent has appreciated) cc’d to the principal/ HOD !

Sarah976 · 18/07/2024 23:32

I'm doing a card when they break up and a present when they return instead! Can imagine there's so many gifts at this time. I've swapped chocs for biscuits this year and giving them a present when they return for the staff room (or hide in their desk!!)! There's a couple online - Borders to a good one, and one that does boxes with other country biscuits which seems cool https://www.thebiscuitbaron.co.uk/

I obviously have to sample them myself first... for research... 😐🤣

Whiteboard pens and glue sticks - pleeeeeease!
