Toilet routine

Can other mothers please tell me how you have taught your young boys to go to the toilet.

I have two boys 10 and 6 and I have taught them to pull their trousers and pants down to go to the toilet.
My friend recently criticised my boys toilet habits, saying they should just undo their zippers and go to the toilet like this as it's is the most common and quickest way to do it, instead of pulling their trousers/pants down.

Is she right?
Should I be teaching them this way also?

How does your friend know what your sons do??

How does your friend know what your boys do and why does it bother her?

OrwellianTimes · 12/07/2024 16:11

None of her business. Your boys will learn to do it other ways as they get older.

I have two sons and I don’t encourage them to pull trousers and pants down.

they can slip it out the top of their trousers/shorts.

Weetabbix · 12/07/2024 16:12

Why does she know what they do?

I guess if they're using a urinal and pulling everything down then that's not really the etiquette.

But otherwise, why on earth would anyone care?

DiscoBeat · 12/07/2024 16:14

Well obviously I wouldn't explain on here how my boys use the toilet but your way sounds totally fine. And her way works for her boys. Keep away from her if she continues to make personal comments about your children.

Btw my sons are 6 and 10 @Wesel85 and as pp mentioned it’s more the public toilet aspect of it. I don’t think dropping pants and trousers is the done thing.

to people asking how her friend knows….do none of you ever have random discussions with your friends?? I’m 40 with the same pals I had in primary school and we’ve had weird and wonderful conversations over the years

Mine only stands to wee in a public loo or outdoors in nature. At home or friends' houses he sits to wee (trained him to do this as it's the cultural norm for us and much of the non-western world, it's considered very impolite to wee standing up). Stops wee going on walls/floor/loo hinges!

At school he said all boys (including him) just pulled everything down to wee until year 2 or 3. He's year 4 now, apparently they all undo zippers/flies now! May be something to do with the design of boys' shorts and trousers, especially uniform: younger boys tend to be pull up elastic waist style. Boys underpants don't have a fly opening until around age 5? All his school trousers now come with zip and button so it's probably easier to just use those?

FateReset · 12/07/2024 16:33

Isn't using a zip fly risky for younger boys if they're not circumcised?

Exactly what I thought. I have intimate discussions with my ex-schoolmates, now university or workmates, and the way boys pee certainly wouldn't be off our agenda!
