5 washing baskets - is this madness?

Hi lovely people. We have a household - 2 parents and two DC, one 4 and the other a recent baby.

DP insists that we need 5 separate washing baskets - one for whites, one for lights, one for brights, and then one for darks plus a 5th for delicates/hand washing.

I think this is bonkers - at most its probably whites/lights, darks/brights, and then delicates/handwash. We don’t have the space for 5 separate washing baskets/bags!

I just use those mesh laundry bags inside the two-compartment laundry basket. I put pure whites in one bag as they get worn, delicates in another mesh bag as they get worn, and then the two compartments are for lights/darks as usual

madmumofteens · 12/07/2024 11:29

Modern washing machines don't do as hot a wash I have one for whites and one for darks 😜

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 12/07/2024 11:30

5? Although to be honest, we have the NYSJÖN ikea laundry cupboard - sorry I don't know how to do links properly but will try..
www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/nysjoen-laundry-cabinet-white-40496471/

And put whites in the top, colours in the bottom, and I keep a small basket on top for hand-wash/delicates that I largely ignore

CountAdhemar · 12/07/2024 11:32

We're on 5 different baskets (although 2 get only occasional use). Massive game changer. YAB(V)U

Luhou · 12/07/2024 11:34

One basket, wash goes on with a colour catcher when it's full (usually once a day 2 adults 2 kids) Obviously I would seperate hand wash/delicates.

mondaytosunday · 12/07/2024 11:36

I used to have two - that's as far as me and my kids could comprehend organise. Lights or darks, and if something delicate/woollen I'd just sort that later. I mean who has the space for all those bins?

Daffyyellow · 12/07/2024 11:40

Laundry baskets upstairs to collect the washing, laundry sorter downstairs by the machines, it has 4 compartments- whites, lights, brights and darks, I combine adjacent categories if they’re not full loads and use a colour catcher. The sorter gets most of the clothing, school lined skirts and blazers I do separately and also bedding and towels.

MrHarleyQuin · 12/07/2024 11:44

We are five adults basically - DH and I have one large basket with two sections in our room. DDs have two bags each, and my DM has one basket in her room. So that's six.

I would go mad if it was all in one pile/place and prefer it being separate and pre-sorted where possible so I/we can tackle it a bit at a time.

thesugarbumfairy · 12/07/2024 11:52

I have one with three compartments - that's because my teens get through towels like nobodies business.
Then one is for whites (mainly school shirts) and the other for anything else. I'm the only one that might own anything 'delicate' or 'handwash' so no basket for that.

hulahooper2 · 12/07/2024 08:57

i just have one for everything and sort it as I wash

Same here.
Whites and pale things all go together whenever possible.
Towels go in with the closest coloured thing.
Darks & black things all go together whenever possible.

However, if I've a just a few things from each 'category' they sometimes all get washed together.

ClonedSquare · 12/07/2024 12:03

Each person in our house has their own and we just wash everything together. I can't imagine caring to separate whites and colours, but if I did I would do it when loading the machine not have loads of separate baskets.

Gemstonebeach · 12/07/2024 12:06

I have one large laundry hamper for brights, then little unit divided into three pull out baskets for darks, whites and delicates. Have to do it this way or everything would end up mixed up.

That's absolutely exactly what we have

RandomMess · 12/07/2024 12:09

We had 4

Darks
Lights/whites
Red/pink/purples (4 DDs and and Liverpool fans)
Delicates/other/don't you dare touch DH

Worked for us.

Zanatdy · 12/07/2024 12:10

One basket and if I have enough for 2 loads I will seperate into lights and darks but usually all in together

museumum · 12/07/2024 12:12

I couldn't bear the thought of sorting my husband and sons' dirty washing - eugh.. especially sports kit... everything goes in separate baskets depending on the wash. We do a 60deg light colour cotton wash (school and work shirts and towels mainly), we do a 'mixed load 40deg' wash for most stuff and then a 30deg sports wash with special sports wash liquid for sports stuff. So 3 baskets.

Decafflatteplease · 12/07/2024 12:14

We actually have 6 😂

2 adults 4 children.

We have one in the bathroom for pants/socks/wipes etc these all get washed seperate from the main wash so no more losing socks.

Then 2 uniform and work clothes baskets, one lights one darks, all uniform/work stuff is washed and dried on a weekend so it stays together and I'm not hunting for a jumper midweek at 8am!

Then a basket in each DC room so I'm only washing the children's clothes who sleep in each room so it's easier to put away

Then dh and I have a basket.

We also have 2 separate uniform/work clothes wardrobes.

I need to get a life 😂

maybein2022 · 12/07/2024 12:15

We are a family of 5 and have 5 washing baskets- one in each bedroom plus an extra one in ours. It’s a lot of washing…

RubyDarke · 12/07/2024 12:38

I have one laundry hamper but inside it are 3 large drawstring bags - one for darks, one for general coloured laundry, and one for white laundry. It means a couple of seconds more to sort when putting dirty stuff in the bin, but saves loads of time when washing. Put this system into place when DC were small and still using it nearly 20 years later.

yikesanotherbooboo · 12/07/2024 13:18

1 laundry basket on the landing that i sort through when doing washing and wash the category that there is most of from a range eg bedding and towels/sturdy lights
Whites ( take a while to build up these)
Delicate lights
Black/ very dark
Other coloured clothes
Where are all thee baskets going to be kept

Thegreatgiginthesky · 12/07/2024 13:25

We have one per bedroom. Colours and darks get washed together and the basket does not need sorting, it just goes straight back up to the bedroom it came from.

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 12/07/2024 13:36

This sounds very odd. Surely you just have a laundry bin or bins (one per bedroom - one for you two, one for the kids) and sort through it as you wash or a communal one on the landing as it was when I was growing up.

I have a laundry bin in my room, DS has one in his room, if I decide I’m doing whites I’ll ask him for his whites and he’ll go through his bin and get the whites out and put them outside his door or in the machine, I fish mine out of mine and add them too and turn it on. I hang / fold as things come out of the drier / off the radiator and pop his stuff on its own pile for him to take and put away. My laundry basket that lives on top of the drier is literally reserved for sticking in the odd few bits that’ll need ironing until I can be arsed to get the iron out.

Repeat as necessary for other colours.

Juke1 · 12/07/2024 08:59

Whoever tends to do the laundry should get to choose! Agree it sounds OTT but if he’s laundry man in your house then it’s his call.

This.

dementedpixie · 12/07/2024 13:41

There are 2 in my bedroom; 1 for light and 1 for dark colours. The kids have a pop up one in each of their bedrooms which is mixed. I make up a load from the kids' baskets and 1 of ours depending what is being washed
