To wonder what is wrong with people who don't really drink

No - not alcohol

Just liquid

People who can sit down to a meal without so much as a glass of water

People who invite guests to stay but have nothing to offer them to drink oh and you'd have to boil the tapwater haha

I can't sleep from thinking about this

Just act like a grown up and buy water.

It's not like the well, it's not that deep Grin

Update
I ran into a corner shop while they were busy and bought three cans of 7up and an orangina

I also had 2L of sparkling water with lunch out (they looked at me like i was cooking up heroin at the table)

This will last me for tonight at least

Thanks for helping me keep my sanity through the dry morning, everyone

I love eating! I love food. I love cooking. One of my main pleasures in life is food.
But I still don't feel the need to drink when eating. A lot of my food has a sauce. I also drizzle food with olive oil so nothing I eat is dry. It all slips down nicely.
A nutritionist actually told me you shouldn't drink too much when eating. If you're adding loads of liquids to your stomach when you eat, it interferes with nutrient absorption.

Freespeechisvital · 12/07/2024 17:42

This is bizarre. I’ve seen competitive under eating threads in MN before, but competitive under drinking is a new one on me

This
It's absolutely bonkers that they think anyone who drinks the recommended amount of 2-3 litres daily must have issues with electrolytes etc
Batshit

Grabbed an elderflower pressé, a watermelon and some drinking yoghurt

i dont need a drink when i eat

i wonder what is wrong with those that do need a drink to help their food go down

Same. I always have a drink 30 minutes after, which I've been told aids digestion.

BebbanburgIsMine · 12/07/2024 18:41

I need some juice with any meal, I actually drink more than I eat.

Never water though, I don't like it, I have Apple Apple and Mango, Irn Bru, or Pepsi Max Cherry, don't really drink anything else.

DatingDinosaur · 12/07/2024 18:54

Apols if this has already been mentioned (I'm only at the end of page 1). Didn't drinking water with meals come from the 1980s diet fad of the time? Glass of water before a meal to feel fuller/need less food. Sip water during the meal to slow down your eating, allow the food to absorb the water, making you eat slower and feel fuller on less food. And it's all got lost in translation somewhere Confused

Why not a 4×2l pack of bottled water? You clearly aren't actually thirsty.

No. Not drinking with meals is horrible. I have haunting memories of my youth where only one tiny glass of beverage was permitted. Thirst thirst thirst.

I remember going to a friend's house when I was a child and her mum didn't let us have a drink with our meal because she said it would fill us up and we wouldn't eat all our dinner. Torture!

They aren't very healthy drinks.

Sprogonthetyne · 12/07/2024 13:49

That is interesting, maybe it is a generational thing or perhaps area specific? I was brought up being told it was rude to arrive empty handed.

If I was staying at someone's house I'd turn up with a bag of cake, treats & drinks to share, and depending on plans, the ingredients to make a meal for everyone as a thank you to the host for having me.

Yeah, I didn't word that accurately - definitely rude to arrive empty-handed in terms of a gift for the host, but in terms of bringing food/drink to consume oneself, I was always taught that was a no-no.

It really is because you're saying they don't provide adequately

I think I would prefer boiled well water to that concoction. Why didn’t you buy plain water to drink in the house? Seems like you love drinking ‘chemicals’ yourself!

This whole set-up is just odd.

Haveanaiceday · 12/07/2024 19:35

Well I thought it was a bit of an unusual problem but it turned out to be a very odd situation altogether. So many questions How can these people live with no clean drinking water, only a well full of chemicals and way of cleaning it? Why was the OP dying of thirst but only willing to drink fizzy drinks or drinking yogurt. Why are these people so against drinking that she had to sneak to the shop behind their back?

BebbanburgIsMine · 12/07/2024 19:37

@RampantIvy

I know the fizzy juice isn't healthy, but what's wrong with Apple and Apple and Mango juice?

I've always found it tricky tbh, because I feel like I'm putting people out by not drinking the things most people drink - I don't expect them to get anything in especially for me, but it does leave me with few options. Having said that, my friends are used to me now and tend to have juice or Diet Coke in or something. 😄

S0livagant · 12/07/2024 19:46

RampantIvy · 12/07/2024 19:13

I agree. A small glass of juice once a day would be fine but things like Pepsi too, and all day?

MistyGreenAndBlue · 12/07/2024 19:58

So, lets see if I I undersand this:
OP has "gone on holiday by mistake" - apparently to Cold Comfort Farm.
(No water supply but apparently there's an adequate internet connection)
Her hosts will be mightily offended if she dares to provide herself with adequate refreshments- however, she is desperate now and, greatly daring of their wrath, has breached the walls of her cell and run to the corner shop for a can of lilt and a yoghurt.
I am looking forward to the next installment.

BebbanburgIsMine · 12/07/2024 20:06

@S0livagant

Yes, all day, sometimes Lemonade and Ribena too.

I don't drink tea at all, occasionally have coffee out somewhere. I don't drink milk either as I don't eat dairy at all.

That's not at all healthy, crazy amounts of either sugar or artificial sweeteners, and fizzy drinks are awful for teeth.

BebbanburgIsMine · 12/07/2024 20:15

@S0livagant

I know they're bad for teeth, I wear full dentures for a number of reasons, so I'm not bothered about that.

My adult DDs both have perfect teeth, with no issues whatsoever, and no they weren't raised on a diet of fizzy juice!

VJBR · 12/07/2024 20:39

It is advised not to drink with a meal. Is better for the digestion. Also if you are ‘dying of thirst’ carbonated fizzy drinks just make you more thirsty. Frankly if I was as thirsty as you OP I would be going to the dr for a check up.
