To wonder what is wrong with people who don't really drink

OptimismvsRealism · 12/07/2024 07:12

No - not alcohol

Just liquid

People who can sit down to a meal without so much as a glass of water

People who invite guests to stay but have nothing to offer them to drink oh and you'd have to boil the tapwater haha

I can't sleep from thinking about this

I rarely drink with a meal (very occasionally wine). I do generally drink loads throughout the day but not with food. I don't drink any type of soft drinks like juice, squash or fizzy drinks. I've never liked them. They're way too sugary for me. I much prefer water or various types of tea and coffee. My DH and kids like smoothies so I get one bottle a week for them to share. I don't get more because I think they should be drunk in moderation because of the sugar. They're all happy to drink water. We do have a box of Nesquik powder so the kids will have a milkshake maybe twice a week.

ruethewhirl · 12/07/2024 10:06

If they're that hard up they really shouldn't be hosting someone should they. What with all the wanton water used for additional washing, possible heating costs as well? A bottle of squash is about £2 for crying out loud.

Yeah, that wasn't really where I was going with my post.

Not sure what you mean by 'wanton water used for additional washing' though.

Remove the D from the end of the word used.

My point was that if they're that hard up that providing drinking water to their guests is going to impact their pension then maybe they shouldn't have guests. Because guests use other utilities that cost more than drinks and therefore would impact their pensions more?

If I'm missing your point please enlighten me.

spikeandbuffy · 12/07/2024 10:11

I drink loads
Spin class is at least a litre of water
Through the day probably 6 mugs of tea and 1-2l water as well

TheBirdintheCave · 12/07/2024 10:12

I'm autistic and just forget! 😂 Quite common with ND folk apparently!

usernother · 12/07/2024 10:15

I think people who can eat a meal without a drink must have a lot of saliva. I can't eat a meal without a drink.

GingerPirate · 12/07/2024 10:17

I don't think it's anything wrong with them.
They are adults, this is presumably their choice.
Others don't need to be around, if they don't like it.
Simple.

Nannyfannybanny · 12/07/2024 10:18

I don't drink with food, I can't have had quite a bit of abdo surgery and have a hiatus hernia. There's no room for both. I am amazed how many people have trolleys half filled with bottled water, and there's me, trying to reduce the use of plastic.

Sprogonthetyne · 12/07/2024 10:20

This doesn't seem to be about drinking vs not drinking. It's about you not wanting what they drink (boild well water) and also not wanting to bring your own.

You predicted this and it prompted you to buy a solitary can of coke. At that point you could have bought a few big bottles of water, but chose not to.

You also have the option to go boil a load of water, and leave it to cool, but are choosing not to.

You'll knacker your kidneys if you carry on like that!

celadora · 12/07/2024 10:24

You're not supposed to have a cold drink with food, it congeals the food in your stomach and makes it harder to digest.

In Japan restaurants give you free green tea to eat with your meal.

MissTrip82 · 12/07/2024 10:26

Some people drink far too much water. There’s some silly behaviour with water bottles,

Equally I sometimes find elderly patients quite dehydrated because they only drink tea, water is not a familiar drink for them.

At both ends of the scale their sodium levels can be an issue.

spikeandbuffy · 12/07/2024 10:27

@GiveMeSpanakopita they're fine, I've always drunk a lot, had a kidney scan a couple of years ago
I spend all day talking and need drinks so my throat isn't killing me by the end of the day. On days I don't exercise I drink less

WiseBiscuit · 12/07/2024 10:28

It is shit hosting to not have drinks in the house for guests.

People have different requirements but no-one should be thirsty.

I don’t drink tea or coffee so I always carry squash with me in the car plus bottled water for emergencies (partly because I spend a lot of my time in a field with no drinking water - horse related).

ruethewhirl · 12/07/2024 10:29

Like me, OP may have been brought up being told that it's rude to take anything to eat or drink when you go to stay at someone's house. I have the same issue as I don't drink tea, coffee or milk, so I'm often stuck with tap water unless I bring my own drinks, which genuinely doesn't always seem to go over that well. It may be a generational thing, I dunno.

MrHarleyQuin · 12/07/2024 10:29

Yes indeed. Have you got 'owt moist?

DeanElderberry · 12/07/2024 10:33

It may well be generational. I'm old, and see water as both necessary and adequate. As I posted upthread, at home I drink other things, but not either soft drinks or fruit juice, and would not usually have either available for guests - soft drinks were very occasional treats (not every week, never mind every day), fruit juice didn't exist unless you cut oranges in half and squeezed them yourself..

AvidLurker · 12/07/2024 10:33

My ILs are similar to your hosts and I am similar to you. I suppose big difference is water is available and they are water drinkers. I detest water (I know I shouldn’t), I live off mutiple fizzy drinks/ribenna/herbal tea. I always load my car with crates of MY drinks before I visit then each day I take so many in to the bedroom to keep me going in the evening/early morning.

I won’t die of dehydration without them but I get faux withdrawals without! I always have to have ice cold drinks so I do suffer there sometimes as they aren’t kept in a fridge. However I take a few Stanley cups and load with the ice I purchase and leave in their freezer, and a Stanley filled with hot water for evening tea drinking. This then gives me enough ice until the morning - I do feel awkward but hey ho. I could leave these in their fridge and access when I want but I feel awkward as I said they are water drinkers vs caffine loaded fizzy drinks!

Can you not visit a shop in the day depending on how long you are staying and do something similar? I also find when I only have one drink left and I need to stretch it I always want more and that’s harder to manage!

OP is so rural that the property only has undrinkable well water, but has still managed to do a Waitrose run for juice.

Online for next week to my own house

Obviously

I run 5k a day and I don't drink that much lol

I'm with you on multiple cups of tea tho ;-)

Oh dear
You need to read different articles
Nothing true in those pearls!

My family have haemocromotosis (blood disorder/iron overload) and it's true about tea tannins inhibiting the absorption of iron.
Is a pub med published study a good enough article for you??

"Results: A significant reduction in iron absorption was observed when the test meal was accompanied by drinks of tea instead of water. In the tea drinking group, the increase in storage iron was reduced by about one third compared with that of the control group."

@GiveMeSpanakopita I think it's the fact spin is so fast maybe? I don't drink as much with netball and weights
But it's more the fact I do about 140 phone calls a day and if I don't drink I get really sore

Jesus Christ it was added for dramatic effect! If they object to providing potable water for OP because of cost then the usage of water to wash hands, pots, bodies, flushing the toilet, must push them over the edge?!

Sorry I didn't realise there was some personal knowledge or joke between you and OP Hmm

Spin is a stationary bike right? So indoors, so yes you're probably sweating a huge amount.

That plus the 140 calls a day ofc! If I had to speak to that many people in a day it wouldn't be water I'd need - it'd be a stiff whisky! 😂
