DD 4 keeps saying she's tired

worriewarty · 11/07/2024 17:50

She's broken up from school for a week now and I admit, her bed time has been later than usual.

She still gets up at a similar time, so she definitely isn't getting enough sleep.

She also had a virus at the weekend with a fever for a couple of days.

She keeps complaining she's tired.

Yesterday she fell asleep at 5 pm in the car and woke up again at 4 am. I did try to wake her a few times but she didn't want to.

I got up with her at 4. Anyway we then had to a car journey today and she fell asleep for about an hour, after only 10 minutes in the car.

Now she's still complaining she's tired and needs to sit down.

Is it all just catching up with her ? She's not usually like this. It's unlike her to say she's tired. I'm also thinking she might've bored and that's also making her tired.

I think you’ve answered your own question here!

I know. It's just unlike her to keep saying it. When we travel etc for example, she often has a later bed time and maybe a virus too but she doesn't then keep saying she's tired. It's just unusual.

I would give it time and see how she is in another week.

Try to get her bedtime back to normal.

Less sleep, coupled with end of term tiredness and a virus has probably just wiped her out a bit.

longdistanceclaraclara · 11/07/2024 18:19

End of term, my 13 year olds are the same.

PiggieWig · 11/07/2024 18:21

End of term, getting o er a virus and not getting enough sleep… of course she’s tired! Couple of lazy days and she’ll be back to her old self again!

llamajohn · 11/07/2024 18:38

She's unwell, sleep deprived and it's the end of term.

OF COURSE SHE'S TIRED.

let her rest and recover for a few days

CowboyJoanna · 11/07/2024 18:56

Let your poor DD rest OP...no wonder the little mite is tired

Garibaldhead · 11/07/2024 18:59

Is she drinking a lot, is she weeing a lot, has she lost weight?

Type 1 diabetes can be triggered by a viral infection.

With my DC it was tiredness after a virus that made us see a GP and it turned out they were diabetic.

I'm not saying this is the case with your DD but it is definitely worth being aware that it could be.

Janedoe82 · 11/07/2024 19:01

Honestly I would phone the GP for advice.

piscesangel · 11/07/2024 19:03

Not sure what your point is OP - your child definitely isn't getting enough sleep and is now saying she's tired?!

Greyblind09 · 11/07/2024 19:20

You’ve answered your own question in the OP. What’s the point of this thread?

Janedoe82 · 11/07/2024 21:08

I imagine OP is wondering if this is normal tiredness or something more. I personally wouldn’t rule it out so would speak to GP

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 11/07/2024 21:12

It’s too soon after being ill for it to be suspiciously tired.
Id let her sleep whenever she is tired.

Too soon for GP, I'd give it until Monday. Viruses can take a good week to recover from.

OP: hi, it's the end of term, my child also has a virus, and also went to bed late for a few days. So I've brought her here because she says she's tired...
GP: right ... Come back in a week if she's still asleep tired.

Honestly I would phone the GP for advice.

The advice would surely be " let this poorly, sleep deprived child who isn't the end of term rest and recover.... come back if it's still a problem in a week..."

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 11/07/2024 21:21

I agree. They aren’t going to even suspect post viral fatigue until it’s been weeks after the illness. In addition, even if it is post viral fatigue the treatment consists of lots of rest and limiting physical activity…

Namechangedagain20 · 11/07/2024 21:21

It’s most likely that she’s out of her normal sleeping pattern. If she’s woke up at 4 in the morning, then napped in the car and her normal sleeping patterns thrown off she’s bound to be tired. Add in a virus and just finishing term and it makes sense.

I’d spend a few days avoiding long car journeys and stay at home if possible to get her sleeping pattern back to normal and then see how she is. Obviously if it’s still going on after a week of normal sleep I’d see the GP but this sounds perfectly normal for a child who’s just been unwell and not sleeping normally.

Janedoe82 · 11/07/2024 21:21

maybe. But the needing to sit down would worry me. They might want to run a blood test. What have you got to lose by a quick telephone appointment?

Why? Poorly, sleep deprived 4 yr olds like to put their feet up as much as anyone.

Thack · 11/07/2024 21:25

Op, I'm with pp, she has good reason to feel tired!

Do you/her dad say about tiredness often? Both me and DH declare that we are tired often. My 3.5yo has started to say it and also says they have a headache (...DH suffers with chronic migraine).
She might be going through a phase of copying or attention seeking if it gets a fuss or reaction from you. I'd not read too deep into it just yet

Mine didn’t. If they were asking to sit down I would worry. Suppose it depends on the personality of the child.

Not if they're poorly it's not.

The kid is probably just wiped out.

If this was out of the blue, sure.... But it's not is it?

Janedoe82 · 11/07/2024 21:43

Yes logically could just be wiped out. But OP knows her own child and I am a big believer in mothers intuition. If she has a niggling doubt I would phone GP tomorrow for a bit of reassurance.

? When mine were that age while poorly and sleep deprived all they wanted to do was lie on the sofa and watch a film, or colour, or look through their picture books or only go on the swing if we went to the play park- all sitting down activities. They also needed day time naps when recovering.

This is normal less than a week after being ill with a fever.

If the DD is still very tired a week from now, then I would see the GP

Or OP is a FTM, and doesn’t have the experience to know?
