AIBU to say not happy with electricians work?

Saffy34 · 11/07/2024 11:39

Just that really, I don’t know whether I was expecting too much with the finish.
I thought it’s only a few simple jobs that we asked for. Replacing a pendant, adding a dimmer switch and a new socket. Not had any building or electrical work before in our house so would appreciate others advice and opinions.
AIBU to say I’m not happy and can they come back to sort it! (I’ve not paid anything yet)

This is shocking

What did they say when you pointed it out to them?

Pun intended?!
Definitely get them back, what a shoddy finish.

Serenity45 · 11/07/2024 11:43

They are taking the absolute piss

celadora · 11/07/2024 11:44

I wouldn't trust them to rectify this. Not sure what your rights are but I wouldn't want to pay a penny and would use the money to pay someone else to make good the work.

CrunchyCarrot · 11/07/2024 11:46

Absolutely terrible! Work should be neatly and smoothly finished off. Do not pay them for that work, and don't let them come back to do anything further! I'd actually want that checked by a qualified electrician to make sure that those fittings are safe.

Gogogo12345 · 11/07/2024 11:47

They are taking the piss. I wouldn't be paying for that

TomatoSandwiches · 11/07/2024 11:49

That is embarrassingly poor work.

they are electricians not plasterers/decorators.

what's in the contract or quote?

bluecomputerscreen · 11/07/2024 11:52

every time we had work that damaged plaster it was clead in the quote that the builders would backfill but that they are not able to provide professional finish.

TiredHippo · 11/07/2024 11:55

Just asked my other half (qualified electrician), and he said he would have tried to leave it neater, but they can't plaster over as that's not their job, as long as the electrics work, then it's cosmetic for the rest. He said the dimmer switch would have needed a bigger back board, so that will be why it comes out further.

LindorDoubleChoc · 11/07/2024 11:56

I work for a firm of electricians who have been established over 15 years and are thriving.

All of our quotes state that we will provide a rough finish only, to comply with safety regs, and then finishing off by third party plasterers or decorators.

Then surely you create a bigger hole, you don't leave it sticking out?!?

Saffy34 · 11/07/2024 12:07

Thanks for replies! I expected some filler ect but definitely thought would be neater. Glad not just me.

There's a difference between professional finish and what my 6 year old DGS could do. Those pictures are more the latter

user675654 · 11/07/2024 12:14

Electricians generally don’t make good the decorative finish. You need a decorator for that I’m afraid

Saffy34 · 11/07/2024 12:19

I think it’s the gap between the dimmer switch and the gap between the pendant and the ceiling that I’m most unhappy about.

Thanks for replies
(first time posting on here so not sure how to directly reply to people 🤦‍♀️😆)

from the pictures it looks like a handywoman with decorating skills should be able to fix this reasonably quickly.

WrigglyDonCat · 11/07/2024 12:48

I would have thought the white cane and the dog would have been a red flag OP...

Seriously thought, the filler doesn't bother me - that's easily fixed when decorating.

The little gap on the dimmer is a little crude if it was because the back box wasn't as deep as would be ideal - you'd hope a professional would install a deeper back box (but as I assume it's a solid wall that would have been a bit more effort). At least the gap is small and even and can be disguised in decorating as well.

But the pendant looks like it is just dangling free? Not screwed onto a back plate or anything? If so, I'd be somewhat surprised if that met any kind of regs.

MartinsSpareCalculator · 11/07/2024 13:27

What did the quote stipulate was included, as it generally wouldn't be the norm to make good decorative finishing like plaster or paint.

Did you have a conversation about the dimmer switch or pendant when they were there?

FeatherBoas · 11/07/2024 13:39

The cover on the pendant may just screw up flush, ours looks like that if you partially unscrew it. The other bits need rubbing down with sand paper to take the worst off, then re-fill the holey bits leave to dry and sand down again flush. You can loosen the covers for access, probably sensible to turn off the power while working on it.

That’s not plastering, that’s a bit of filler. No decent sparky wouldn’t learn how to do this.
I’d have done better when I was 10.

Venice241 · 11/07/2024 13:58

A decent electrician wouldn't leave a mess like that. I would do a better job than that.

That is a I don't give a shit job.

No decent electrician would leave work like this!

It's not plastering, it's smoothing some filler round a socket which even I managed when I changed a cracked socket plate over and the new one was smaller.

@Saffy34 please tell me you did your homework and employed a fully qualified electrician and not just someone who calls themselves an electrician?

TwinCheeks · 11/07/2024 14:14

Did he apply that bodge with a spoon?! Not in the least bit acceptable. More of a bad handyman job.

It's strange how plumbers and electricians dont need to be registered with any professional bodies to call themselves so yet have the potential to catastrophically ruin your home.

GruntledGoblin · 12/07/2024 15:39

Good grief that's bloody awful! No tradesperson worth their salt would leave a mess like this. Post the pics on their Socials and ask them politely to come back and finish to a reasonable standard. How do they DARE charge you for such a shoddy half-assed job.
