Going to Tenerife in August

Family going to Tenerife in August for a much looked forward to & needed break. I realise we are fortunate to be able to do this given the current financial climate but we have saved all year for this. I'm now having second thoughts with the latest protesters going as far as spraying tourists with water. Apparently they are heading for popular tourist areas next. I understand their issues but feel it's wrong to terrorise families with innocent young children & the elderly. I feel like cancelling. It's a horrible thought heading to a holiday destination where your blatantly not welcome. It's such a shame they feel like this now. WWYD.

Meant to add (too late to edit) its a lovely hotel in Cost adeje in case people say wouldn't go because it attracts neds etc. We've been before & it was really welcoming & generally a lovely area.

Am just back from Tenerife - Los Gigantes. Saw no protests and did travel down to the more touristy areas.

Tenerife in August will be so hot that you will be grateful to anyone who sprays you with water.

We were there at the end of May, no protests then either

Will it? I thought the climate there was more or less the same all year round, and quite pleasant.

Not like mainland Spain.

However, I have no idea how it's being affected by climate change.

Tablesalt111 · 10/07/2024 14:14

I think the last protest was April and I think the water spraying was in mainland but I might be wrong. The protest organisers in tenerife did say they will try to disrupt the summer break but not sure how exactly they will do that... the shop keepers will want the custom , the hotels and resorts will have security and restaurant owners will want tables filled .They can have their planned protests but the Spanish police don't mess about so I'm sure it will be fine.

Just got back from Costa adeje yesterday. Saw nothing like you describe, everyone was very welcoming

The water spraying was in Barcelona. There are protests, but it's understandable why and it's really more aimed at the government for allowing so many homes to be turned into tourist lets and also all the AI hotels going up so tourists don't spend money in local establishments.

I can understand why they're so cross - it's their country and housing is unaffordable, plus in tourist season it's rammed with people who use a ton of water and clog up the roads.

On the whole they rely on tourism so you are welcome, they just want controls so there aren't so many tourists coming in at the same time.

I was in Costa Adeje May HT and the locals were so lovely. Have a fab holiday

Cuppateatea · 10/07/2024 14:57

I wouldn’t worry OP. I’m just back from Palma Majorca where there have (apparently) been loads of protests etc. We saw nothing.
Have a fab time!

Pery · 10/07/2024 14:59

I was in the canaries in January when there were supposedly protests and in Mallorca last month. Saw nothing.
Tenerife will be hot, but nowhere near as hot in August as mainland Spain.
Forget about it and enjoy your holiday

Thanks for the replies, I really appreciate the feedback. I'm normally more resilient but we've all had to cope with so much negative news recently it would test the strongest of resolves. The latest news about the 3 women 😢 tipped me over the edge & I started spouting to DH I wasn't going to Tenerife to be abused. Deep down I know the majority of residents are great people. They just want their own needs met as well as catering for tourists. If by chance there is anyone from Tenerife reading this I'd like to say we understand and we really do appreciate your hospitality.
