Don't enjoy exercise or eating healthy but am about 3 stone overweight at least and need to make a change. I need your tips and help!! How can I enjoy exercise more? How do I start cooking and eating healthy??!

Oh gosh - well that'll teach me then. I'm not going to apologize for my words which did come from a 'caring' place but can only say don't judge people so harshly MNetters and maybe you won't feel so harshly judged either.

I haven't got any chocolate cake to scoff tonight otherwise I'd share it but when I'm ready I will definitely be lying down in a darkened room soon - generally called 'sleeping' for those that need more explanation.

Stop snacking, eat 3 tasty nutritious meals a day with minimal UPF’s, go cold Turkey with sugar, no booze and start couch to 5k. You’ll feel like a new woman. Don’t restrict your calories, allow yourself to eat, or you’ll binge and fall back to old habits. Meal prep so it’s all there ready for you and you won’t be tempted to grab something junk foody.

Came from a caring place, are you having a laugh??! I think there's something up with you. Like a previous poster said, perhaps you are not well.

Do you like dancing. Could you try something like just dance or Zumba online for 20 mins a day?

In terms of dieting I find fasting easiest.

SensualDecay · 09/07/2024 22:05

I wouldn't perhaps want to exercise if I was overweight either. I think that's fair and that you should check back in with how you feel about it as you lose weight. I definitely feel much more in control of my body the lighter I am, which is part of what makes the whole thing enjoyable.

Regarding the food, I've intermittently fasted and been low carb for about fifteen years. I've been eating what I felt was very delicious and nourishing food. But for the last year all I want is burgers and chips 😂 Sometimes I crack and have two portions. It's awful.

But most of the time I am still eating the way I always have. It's just willpower. I have to eat or I will die. I cannot live off Macdonald's because it will make me unhealthy. It's sad but it's true.

Have you tried swimming? Very good total body exercise and cardio, that is enjoyable and relaxing. If you’re worried about how you look, there are people who swim at my leisure centre who are severely obese (not saying you are in this category), and no one cares. Everyone is there for fitness, not to show off their beach bod. You could try paying for just one session and see how you get on. They have lanes from slow to fast so any ability is fine.

Try adding more vegetables to your diet, on top of what you already eat. Eating them before carbs will help you to feel fuller and will lessen your blood sugar spikes. This in turn will help you not to crave carbs as much.

Check out the Glucose Goddess on Instagram for really good advice.

What does “eating healthily” mean? You just need to build a good relationship with food, it’s about balance. Don’t see foods as “good” and “bad”, you can eat anything, you just can’t eat everything. All these nonsense diets just create yo-yoing and bad relationships with food. Think about portion sizes, what you can swap eg crisps at lunch for some fruit, build treats into your plans, chocolate isn’t evil.

Hey OP. First you need to figure out your basal metabolic rate and work out your ideal calorie allowance. This can be calculated based on your age height and current weight. You need a slight caloric deficit and find an exercise you can do, not necessarily enjoy. Calories are energy, not fat, and you need energy to exercise. I eat around 1000kcal a day and aim for at least one hour of walking every day. You might only be able to do 15 minutes at first, but it will gradually increase. And if you feel hungry but not sure if you're just bored, drink water. If you feel satisfied, you're bored. Otherwise you can do with a bite to eat. Keep to all those things, and you'll lose about 1lb a week. Don't cut out food, just reduce the portion sizes.

I've found myself to be a bit tubby myself and lost 2.6lbs last week. It can be done. Good luck!

If you can afford it book a block of classes with a PT. They will be able to tailor a programme suitable for you. Exercise is hard at first and results are not immediate but please don't fall into the trap of thinking that a walk around the block or 10 mins of following some YouTube video will make a huge difference. Most people massively over estimate how much exercise they really do. The PT will show you what a proper work out is and how to achieve your goals. Between PT sessions sign up to classes, find yourself an exercise buddy to help you through those low motivation periods. As for diet, don't fall the fads, the fasting, the celeb endorsed nonsense, you are making a lifetime adjustment that is sustainable in the long run not some 6 week 'plan' to get beach ready. It's tough but doable and you will feel a million times better.

Weight training!!
im in my 40s and wish I’d started in my teens/20s. I’ve always viewed exercise as something I “had” to do- my punishment for eating too much “bad” foods (all a sign of the times I grew up in I think)… now I have found a love of weights and I want to be big and strong- Weight training really appeals to my inner lazy girl (you literally just need to do 8 reps of something, 3 times, and then you’re done with that exercise). You can feel yourself getting stronger, and you can notice yourself improving. I started out following online coaches, but once you’ve got the basics it gets much easier. Do you have any friends who weight train that you could tag along to the gym with? Good luck with your health journey ❤️

I’ve just read Andrew Jenkinson’s book ‘Why we eat too much’. Very interesting and it doesn’t tell you to count calories, just to cut out wheat and refined sugar and eat fewer foods with omega six in and more with omega three.

Meadowlands · 09/07/2024 22:38

I think many many people, myself included, would choose chocolate and crisps over an apple, and a lounge on the sofa over a jog round the block !
It is a lifestyle you have to learn to like. When you start feeling the benefits you do also learn to enjoy it.
It is bloody hard work but oh so worth it for better mental health.
Good luck.

You don't need to eat healthy food to lose weight. So long as you are in a calorie deficit your body fat will decrease. Eating "healthy" foods is to make it easier for you to stay in that calorie deficit - protein to make you feel full, fat to make you feel satiated, low GI (brown) slow release carbs so your blood sugar drops slowly instead of plummeting, vegetables to bulk out your food and make you feel full. Pick your aim and go for it.
