Owner wants me to let her cat outside, only getting paid for an hour

Gtathatchers · 09/07/2024 18:02

I’m doing hour long drop ins for a cat everyday for 2 weeks, I’m only a few days into it. Prior to starting we had a meet and greet and they did not mention about her having to go outside. They don’t have a cat flap or anything, so I have to be here to let her out and to let her back in. The problem is that I’m only being paid for an hours drop in, but when I let her outside, she is never back within the hour. Yesterday, I was here for 2 hours, waiting for her to return, and she only did so because it started to rain. The owners said to walk to the park with her, and that she’ll follow me, so I attempted this and she did not. She’s deaf, and isn’t very food or toy motivated. At first they said to use her harness so I assumed she would be comfortable with it, she wasn’t at all. I tried the gentle approach of trying to put it on her back while she was distracted with some wet food but she’d freak out every time I put it on her, and start hissing, so the owners said please take her out without it, walk to the park and she’ll follow you so I braced myself and did it. She did NOT follow me and instead roamed around on top of the garages in the car park next to their house where I couldn’t get her down from. I stayed outside and watched her until she escaped through a hole in someone’s fence. I did laps around the estate trying to find her until I decided to go and wait in the garden for her to come home. This time she came in half an hour after the agreed hour long drop in period. The second time was much the same except she came in an hour after the drop in should’ve ended, only when it started raining. If it hadn’t started raining she would’ve come back in much later. I’m not sure what to do, she meows to go out all the time but I can’t dedicate hours of my day to waiting for her to return as I’ve scheduled my days based on the fact I’m here for an hour plus commute time. Wwyd?

You’ve done the right thing OP. It’s crazy of the owners to think that a cat’s going to follow instructions.

Chocbuttonsandredwine · 11/07/2024 06:50

agree
owners should be paying you for the time
you are there.

if you continue to let it out do so as soon as you get there (before food) so that it will come back as will be hungry: hopefully

curious79 · 11/07/2024 06:51

Just don’t take the cat out and never look after it again after this

DreamTheMoors · 11/07/2024 06:58

AS CAT OWNERS these folks should know that cats - deaf or not - roam.
I agree with the pp who are advising you to speak with them and revise the arrangements.

Isobel201 · 09/07/2024 18:49

Just keep her in, poor thing. As she is deaf, I wouldn't let her out at all. They need to come up with safer ways to keep her entertained outside.

The cat wants to go outside. The reason for keeping her in is because the cat sitter isn't being paid enough hours.

newnamethanks · 11/07/2024 07:51

Owners are idiots and will come for you if cat chooses to not return. Don't let it out, cats do what they like and so should you.

DustyLee123 · 11/07/2024 07:55

I wouldn’t want the responsibility of letting it out

listsandbudgets · 11/07/2024 07:57

YANBU for cat sitting purposes cats are either outdoor cats with a cat flap or they're not.

We had the opposite problem. Our cats have a cat flap and come and go as they please. We had a cat sitter last year whonwe made this clear to ( hardly unusalnfir cats) who kept sending is crazy texts like

Cat climbed a tree and I had to wait for her to come down have charged an extra half hour

Cat wasn't in when I arrived and looked hungry when she came in after about half an hour very worried about her

Don't think cats food is appropriate have bought something more suitable from vets will add to bill

She was absolutely bonkers .. we refused the extra half hour, gave half the price of the extortionately expensive food and returned the rest of the bag to her and will not be using her again.

dawngreen · 11/07/2024 08:15

Don't leave its food and water outside, Other cats or wildlife will eat it.

SummerTimeIsTheBest · 11/07/2024 08:20

Either don’t let her out or stop working for the owners and they can exploit someone else.

Lighteningstrikes · 11/07/2024 08:28

Don't let it out.

That has made me laugh! I'm a dog groomer and a client recently asked me what I thought about her dog's weight. I said I thought it was probably exactly right. She was asking because she had been on holiday and the mad woman she boarded the dogs with kept going on about how underweight they were. She even used the word "malnourished" Confused. Plus, she was following up with messages like "hope they are enjoying their high-calorie meals" that she assumed they were now being given. Completely bonkers!

MeridianB · 11/07/2024 08:35

Their expectations are completely unreasonable. Stop letting her out because she may not even come back the same day. And if something happens to her, they will be quick to blame you.

My understanding is that cats have to be trained to wear a harness - possibly even from kittens, so trying to shove an older cat into one and drag it to the park is also unreasonable. Also cruel to the cat, which could be attacked by a dog.

Just say you have to stick to the agreed one hour visit.

TheShiningCarpet · 11/07/2024 08:59

That cat does not give a fuck.

tell them it’s not working, litter tray inside

Gtathatchers · 11/07/2024 12:32

she does have a litter tray inside which she uses, in the original meet and greet she said she has a harness that they use on her to take her outside so I assumed she would be comfortable with me putting it on. She was not. I tried putting her wet food on my fingers for her to lick off while I put it on her as a distraction, she would allow me to put it on her back but would hiss and run away every time I tried to clip it up underneath. I told the owners this, so then they said oh well she should be allowed to go in the garden just pick her up if she tries to jump. As soon as I took her outside she jumped on the fence so I picked her up and took her back inside. The next day the owners said please try to take her out without it, I said I don’t feel comfortable and they said it will be fine, she will follow you just go to the park etc. of course as soon as I go out the door with her she runs off into the car park and doesn’t come back until half an hour after the agreed hour. Then the next day they ask again so I agree thinking since this is the start of the hour I’m sure she’ll be back before it ends, she comes back a full hour after the agreed hour. They have a camera in the living room so they can see her begging to go out and me telling her no, so it is quite awkward when they ask. If I knew that she wouldn’t be okay with the harness and they expected me to do this at the start I wouldn’t have accepted the job.

They've been very unreasonable imo. If it was that important to them that she be let out everyday they should have made that clear from the beginning. Yes, you could have asked yourself, but I think the cat owners more so have the responsibility to state their cat's needs and their expectations clearly.

Going forward when you do the meet and greet, it's probably worth asking whether their cat goes outside at all, and whether they need to be let out manually. Due to my similar experience in the past I now make it clear that I don't let cats out manually as they're too unpredictable, and the owners I've worked for have always been understanding about this (granted most of the jobs I do are long weekends rather than multiple weeks!)

I really hope they won't leave you a negative review as that would be very unfair. You've gone way beyond what was initially agreed upon.

rosesinmygarden · 11/07/2024 13:22

They are entitled mickey takers, aren't they!

I'm self employed too and find with people like this, it's best to be politely assertive and proactive and not give them the opportunity to keep you waiting on a response.

Something like...

Dear X
As explained in my last message, Fluffy won't let me put on her harness and she doesn't follow me to the park.

If you want me to let fluffy out and await her return, then I'll need to be charging you for all the time I spend waiting.

As you've not replied to my message , I'll assume you're happy for me to amuse fluffy inside for the hour per day that you booked.

If you'd like to book longer/open ended visits, I'll need a minimum of 24 hours notice so I can schedule this around my other clients.

Best wishes ...

I also have a cat. He does have a cat flap which helps, but he regularly goes AWOL for 24-48 hours. That's what cats do. We have a wonderful cat visiting lady, who keeps me up to date if she's concerned but I'd never expect her to wait/stay longer than what we've agreed.

ElleLeopine · 11/07/2024 13:28

I think you should do the following:

  1. Do not let cat out.
  1. Tell owners that she has been out and was very happy to come back in when asked.
  1. Ask cat not to tell owners that you haven't let her out. Bribe with extra Dreamies if necessary.

Job done.

TheSerenePinkOrca · 11/07/2024 13:35

@Gtathatchers can you build a cage with some bamboo canes and netting so the cat can only go just outside the door? It would cost you about £12 to do but would save you a lot of time having to fetch the cat back in!

Ok... the cat can't roam far but it's still outside!

I wouldn't worry about a bad review. You can surely just respond that the owners wanted you to wait for up to 2 hours for the cat to return but refused to pay you more than 1 hour?

Blondiebeachbabe · 11/07/2024 14:32

I look after dogs for a living, but when I started my business, I did cat visits too. They are a nightmare, imo. I frequently had cats that stayed away for days on end, so you wonder if they're dead! One lady kept asking me to go back at 10pm, to see if cat had returned. Erm no, because I already did the visit, and it's now pitch black, and I'm at home in my jammies with wine!! And I have a life!!

Catsmere · 11/07/2024 22:30

Utterly ridiculous imo to expect a cat sitter to let a cat outside. It's putting far too much responsibility on them. And completely unnecessary since she does in fact have litter to use.

rosesinmygarden · 12/07/2024 14:33

@Gtathatchers did they ever message you back?

Gtathatchers · 12/07/2024 16:22

rosesinmygarden · 12/07/2024 14:33

@Gtathatchers did they ever message you back?

They didn’t respond to my last message. They messaged today saying please let her out today I can see her going crazy at night (camera), so I responded with ‘Hello unfortunately it won’t be possible today as I have to go to another booking immediately after this one. As I said on Tuesday she doesn’t come back within the time frame that we have organised for and I have no way of guaranteeing that she will come back. On days I have no other commitments I can spend extra time waiting for her out of my own time but as we have only got hour long bookings each day it won’t be possible on most days.’ They didn’t respond.

Good for you OP, they're being completely unreasonable expecting you to wait after their cat for free.

VickyEadieofThigh · 12/07/2024 16:54

This is why God invented catflaps. And catteries.
