Horrible cold & flu virus spreading that isn't covid - yet no restrictions?!

AIBU to point this out. There's a wave of illness going about, which is not covid, that is flooring people. Twice recently I've caught it and both times have tested negative for Covid. It's hit me really hard - sore ears, blocked sinuses and persistent cough, aches, chills and fever.

The same symptoms seem to be making a sweep of my local area, at school and at work. Hospitals and old age residential homes must be experiencing similar. Yet no restrictions are put in place like they were in 2020? Or were the lockdowns and restrictions all for nothing?!

I'm genuinely bewildered by this, hence the post looking for some insight.

I didn’t agree with lockdowns for covid and certainly not for cold/flu

Deebee90 · 09/07/2024 16:10

I’ve got it and it’s vile. Definitely not covid although it has floored me for over a week now. Colds and flu exist. People get them and move on it’s fine. Don’t need a lockdown for jt .

Apollo365 · 09/07/2024 16:11

I haven’t RTFT. Could it be FLiRT?
No one tests for covid anymore so no idea if it would test positive if you had any old tests kicking around. But imagine they would be out of date anyway?

midgetastic · 09/07/2024 16:11

Lockdown is a last resort not a response to a bad cold season !

greenpolarbear · 09/07/2024 16:14

Is this a genuine post?

MrsCarson · 09/07/2024 16:15

It's going round here too. Awful cough and congestion, then the head clears and the cough goes on and on. Not a chest infection for most people according to our GP, just a horrible cold/flu thing going round.
I'm sick of hearing myself cough it's been weeks, Dh has it now too.
Recommended for it is Vicks, or Karol type treatments and try to cough it all up as much as you can till it passes.
Makes me wonder if it isn't another variant of covid that isn't detected by the tests they sell at the shops.

Deliberately disingenuous.

My husband has been really unwell for the last 4-5 weeks; a myriad of different things, with each week bringing something new. After developing a rash and joint pain/swelling, he went to the GP. They were great and done a range of blood tests. It's Parvovirus! We hadn't heard of it outside of animals but it's actually not that uncommon in humans and he has had the full textbook of symptoms. Seems it can hang around for months but isn't contagious once the rash is out.

Lots of unexpected viruses out there, it seems.

It’s normally called slapped cheek disease or 5th disease in humans.

It’s doing the rounds here.

storminateacupagain · 09/07/2024 16:19

have heard that this covid "strain" is not being picked up by testing.

This is very worrying indeed, OP. The new virus seems to have shut down your capacity for critical thinking entirely. I hope that you are able to make a swift recovery.

🤣

Edited

DS just used an old NHS test to confirm that he does indeed have Covid. Very faint line but positive so yes, they do still work. He worked through the pandemic and this is the first time he’s had it, it’s a nasty strain.

Lovemusic82 · 09/07/2024 16:20

Are 100’s of people dying from this virus? …..no

theres always going to be viruses, we can’t hide away in fear of getting sick.

Tend to think that these weird, goady, lockdown-fetishist posts are actually part of some research project gathering people's opinions on pandemic management.

Especially as the OP's posts are so contradictory.

It is a fetish now isn't it. Agree. 👍

AIBU to point this out.

Yes.

Toomuch44 · 09/07/2024 16:21

What area do you live in OP? Where has it spread?

Just wondering as there's no sign in my immediate area (massive village of 17,000+) or local town. I work in a school and shop so have lots of contact with people. In regular contact with all our local family and friends, no one has had a cold/flu bug in last months - in fact, no one has been ill.

OperationPushkin · 09/07/2024 16:21

Are people dying in vast numbers? No? There's your answer.

Lifeomars · 09/07/2024 16:23

When Covid first appeared it was new and as we saw had the potential to kill and maim which it did. The vaccine thankfully de-fanged it. When we had restrictions, we saw fewer infectious diseases across the board due to people not mixing as we usually do. Now things are back to the way they used to be people are of course catching all sorts of stuff again. I had some horrendous thing back in late January that lasted until the end of March, not covid as I tested negative. I think it might have been whopping cough given the symptoms I had and the fact that it was doing the rounds. There are quite a few poorly people around now but we don't need restrictions as we are not facing the unknown as we were with Covid.

Is flu circulating widely now? In July?

It can do, especially with crap weather.

BlueLens · 09/07/2024 15:38

I'm not for restrictions or lockdowns. They were pretty much pointless. Disease spreads regardless. My point was that this strain is spreading like wildfire and will kill the clinically vulnerable if it's wiped me (a healthy, physically fit individual). I don't believe that death rates in 20/21 from Covid are any worse than this years or affected the clinically vulnerable any more than this current strain of flu.

Death rates have been below expected levels so far this year.
Why do we need restrictions for a cold? Who is going to pay for it? Are you going to sacrifice your pension? Or do we shave a bit more off the education budget? Perhaps you think disabled people can get by on a bit less?

OperationPushkin · 09/07/2024 16:26

You don't believe it? You do realise it isn't a question of belief?

But I won't waste my time if you are another of those tiresome "covid doesn't exist" conspiracy theorists. 🙄

stayathomer · 09/07/2024 16:32

There should always be restrictions with sicknesses but it’s up to the individual to carry them out- so if your kids are sick get them to wash hands etc, stay off school etc, and others should do the same!!

Beat me to it, this is medicine, not religious faith.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 09/07/2024 16:36

Flu can kill and that has always gone around. Viruses are unfortunately part of life. Covid was new hence restrictions.

Flopsythebunny · 09/07/2024 16:38

Have you got any idea just what covid can do to the vascular system and internal organs or are you still under your rock?

Not sure what you want here, you start by asking why no restrictions and then say you’re not in support of restrictions as they are pointless? So what’s the point of this thread?
