She was always clean, well dressed and with not a hair out of place
Her house was always spotless
She never hesitated with what was proper and what was not
She always meant well
She knew all rules and had manners
She loved her son very much
She never doubted herself, not for a moment
She never said no to all church and community things
She was always very cheerful

And this all was extremely insufferable :) because she wanted everybody to live like that, very properly
But if we think a bit... Was it really too bad? No? Or it's better to live like Daisy and Onslow?

Please don't take this too seriously, let's have some fun.

BTW I love Mills and Boon love stories like Daisy does.

Serious question @twoblackdogs
What do you think Maro Ledbetter and Hyacinth Bouquet would have made of each other. I think they would have settled into a friendly relationship after a very rock start. AIBU?

And she was regularly sexually assaulted by The Major but carried on without a fuss.

I love Hyacinth too. And Margo from The Good Life, I’d happily be either of them.

There's another episode where she's sexually assaulted by 'the commodore' in the back of the vicar's car and I find it really uncomfortable viewing.

The vicar, who normally cannot stand her, even asks if she's ok Sad

Hyacinth was an equal mix of lovely and annoying.

I love the fact that the actress was in a relationship with Pat St Clement. Makes me laugh the idea of the mix of Hyacinth and Pat Butcher. (Though, yes I know they weren't actually them, but the thought amuses me none the less!)

Oh that is making me laugh. Never knew that. If you mixed them like paint would you get bet lynch?

twoblackdogs · 09/07/2024 18:04

Oh.
I guess oil drilling paid well enough, so Liz could live a life of leisure. And her dear brother Emmett just took the easy way out and let his sister pay for everything? Not nice.

Emmett was divorced but he did work (it was mentioned in quite a few episodes) and he also volunteered a fair bit.

OldTinHat · 09/07/2024 18:26

I loved the episode when they went horse riding!

Yes I remeber this and it makes me uncomfortable too. It's so accurate in that women often feel the need to put up with these assaults rather than "make a fuss." I've done it myself.

Throwwaway · 09/07/2024 18:29

How very lower middle class of you, Richard

BouleDeSuif · 09/07/2024 18:32

Yes. She just wanted everything to be nice for the people she loved.
She was a terrible snob, but she put a lot of effort into things that she thought people would enjoy.
Her family loved her but her neighbours were horrible. Bloody sneery Emmett.
I couldn't have put up with Onslow. I liked Daisy though.

Marvelo · 09/07/2024 18:34

I think she’s such an enduring character precisely because she has so many good characteristics along with the bad. She’d be far less interesting and engaging if she was just a nasty snob. Making her well-intentioned means we can sympathise with her while simultaneously laughing at her.

Imagine Hyacinth on mumsnet though. AIBU to call the Chinese ambassador about the wrong number calls I get for the Chinese take away?

Style & Beauty: “Am I suitably dressed to answer my white slim-line telephone with last number redial?”

Property: “Where does one acquire a luxury security system for executives in dusky pink?”

😂😂😂😂 love this

I loved the episode where Hyacinh got drunk on the very posh and very undrinkable wine she had bought at an auction. She suddenly wasn't so stiff and proper anymore. So very human :)

The 'home-made shroosberry gine' - one of my favourite episodes!

Was that the “homemade geesberry woon”🤣

I also want one of these

To really like Hyacinth Bucket :)
AmusedMaker · 09/07/2024 18:49

She’d be hilarious on MN. 😂

I love her. Loved her when it first came out and I was only in my 20’s then.

AnSionnachGlic · 09/07/2024 19:02

I used to love this show too. Some scenes often randomly pop into my mind....like the one when Hyacinth wanted a part in a musical and everything she saw Emmet she burst into song 😂. Also, when they were going 'boating' and she got poor Richard and herself decked out in navy and white ' nautical' attire!! She really approached everything with such gusto 😍.

AzureAnt · 09/07/2024 19:12

I aspire to be Hyacinth but live like Daisy and Onslow 😆😆

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 09/07/2024 19:28

I like The Lady Ursula’s Homemade Gooseberry Wine episode.

She was SHITFACED!

To be fair, the royals did their recent balcony thingy is weird sailor outfits.

Do they think the balcony is a boat?

Must be an upper class thing we’re unaware of.

curtaintwitcher78 · 09/07/2024 19:39

AIBU to ask where can one buy replacements for missing pieces of china? This is for my Royal Doulton with the hand-painted periwinkles. My next door neighbour has smashed 4 pieces now.

Projectme · 09/07/2024 19:52

Loved KUA! Hyacinth was awesome. Patricia Routledge was an outstanding actress and a bloody funny comedienne.

"Would you like a beaker dear?" 🤣

Agree about the episode where she had to put up with the commodore in the back of the car...depressingly real.

When I rewatch it now I actually find it absolutely tragic.. I find it desperately sad. The neighbours are vile to her, particularly Emmett, what a horrible man. The women at the church are always trying to avoid her and laughing at her. Her son seems to use her for money. Her family are hard work. Her father has some sort of dementia or mental illness. She tries so hard. She's not mean or nasty. I feel so sorry for her.

That's definitely one perspective. And yes, now you mention it, it could be like that.

On the other hand...

Hyacinth does some terrible things, the way she forces herself onto society, the way she treats her husband and poor Liz, and the way she has absolutely no self-awareness.

I always think she was aiming to be what Margo Leadbetter was in The Good Life. I think also it was really so clever of the writers to show that while she would frequently speak of her every-day best china with the hand-painted periwinkles, or want the furniture van to display the Royal Crest to all her neighbours, she was frequently seen wearing the same housecoat, her posh outfits were often worn at least twice, and things such as her kettles (I counted three different ones over the years) & of course her white slimline telephone with last number redial, were actually really at the bottom-end of the market, with nothing posh about them at all.

As always, Sheridan brought with him much speculation. Contrary to what a lot of people think, I had him down a huge, rugged gay-bear type, while "Tarquin" was much more like the comedian Tom Allen. I longed for the day they would visit, hoping that Tarquin might have a crush on poor Emmett, who was already fighting off the romantic advances of Rose.

I know this sounds like I've thought about it all too much, but this was one of many sitcoms from my teenage years, and I still watch it now.

fieldsofbutterflies · 09/07/2024 20:02

Yep, I'm surprised so many people are saying how lovely she is, lol.

I mean, yes, she's not entirely horrendous but she's so rude to people too.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/07/2024 20:05

I read somewhere that the series sold to umpteen countries, over 100 IIRC, because apparently Hyacinth is universal, every nation/culture recognises a Hyacinth!

RunAwayTurnAwayRunAwayTurnAway · 09/07/2024 20:06

They are only rumours anyway, but it wasn't Pam St Clement (she is rumoured to have been living with a news reader for many, many years), it was said that Patrica Routledge was linked with Betty Boothroyd.
