Is this spoon too big?

Having a panic as just given my Dd an antihistamine medicine using this spoon, I usually give half of this spoon which I think may be a teaspoon. I didn’t think and just filled the spoon.
Would it have been too much?

That looks like a 5ml teaspoon OP, how much of the medicine is your child supposed to have?

BobVanceVanceRefridgeration · 08/07/2024 20:48

It's impossible to know without something to compare it to in the photo. What dose the box say in terms of dosage (eg 5ml or 10ml?)

Do you have a 5ml medicine spoon to compare?

But in the meantime I'm sure she'll be ok so take a breath and check the recommended dose

Mumoftwo1316 · 08/07/2024 20:48

You'll probably be fine as a one off, but honestly just use a proper calpol syringe next time so you're not guessing

TheChosenTwo · 08/07/2024 20:49

It looks like a teaspoon but impossible to say without anything to compare it to.
How old is she?
We don’t know if it’s too much as we can’t see the usual dosage - what does it say on the bottle?

Samethingagaintomorrow · 08/07/2024 20:52

@GoneFishingToday 5ml spoon looks a bit bigger to me

She’s 6

What dosage does it say a 6 year old should have?

Cheeesus · 08/07/2024 20:54

But if you don’t know how big it is then you don’t know whether you’re usually giving the right amount. A teaspoon isn’t necessarily 5ml and half of it is hard to gauge. You need one of these from a bottle of liquid paracetamol etc. Our teaspoons are much smaller than the 5ml end so you’ve probably been under medicating her.

Then for your current situation, what is the dose meant to be? And do you have any way of measuring the spoon you used? It’s probably ok but you need to get sorted for another time.

I think I’ve been giving less normally, it’s 5 ml in comparison I’d say, it’s ok, just having a panic as usually give less

At 6 I wouldn’t be too worried, (this is obviously not medical advice and if you notice anything different with her call 101
for advice) keep her very hydrated and use a proper syringe or measuring spoon next time.
I’ve still got them in my cutlery drawer and my youngest is 12 and all of them (older 2 are adults!) take tablets now but I can’t get rid of them, just in case…

If you have a 5ml syringe in the house, you could fill it up with water and use it to fill the spoon, then you will know exactly how much medicine you have given your DD. This might put your mind at risk.
