To be unhappy with my hair colour?

I went to the hairdressers last week and paid for a full head of highlights or lowlights. I had been to the same hair stylist before and they did a really lovely balayage on me which was dark blonde with lots of blonde highlights and low lights, it was exactly what I wanted I was really happy.

I went last week and asked to go slightly darker this time, I showed the third photo below and mentioned that I wanted it to be cool toned as I've spent the last year (not to mention hundreds of pounds...) trying to remove the brassy orange colour that a dark brown hair dye left in my hair. I asked for it to match my root colour which is a dark blonde/light brown colour. She showed me a swatch and it looked ok and not too dark.

However, the colour it went is a lot darker than my roots, the pictures I've attached make it look lighter than it is but it's a proper medium/chocolate brown rather than a light brown.

I did say I liked it in the salon but their lighting is not the best, it's only when I was at home I realised how dark it is, and how it is very orange/warm toned in the sun. All the ribbons of blonde I had before (and wanted to be kept in) have been covered up with a chocolate brown colour. I feel like I've paid for a balayage/full head of foils and have the result of a box dye.

I like the hair stylist and feel like it was partly my fault for not explaining myself well enough, but for £270 I really don't feel happy with the results. AIBU?

I think you got exactly what you asked for

Do you have a picture of your hair before?
I actually don’t think this is really that dissimilar to the inspo photo. The photo you are referencing is taken outside which makes the blonde appear lighter and also curled which again makes the lighter pieces pop. If you google balayage on straight vs curled hair you will understand the difference.

Cool toner always appears darker because grey is dull and warmer golden blondes are what appear lighter, but often can be the same level just different tones.

This was my hair after the first time I had it done by the same stylist. You can see that despite being straight you can still see the highlights and low lights. It looks darker in this photo, but it was much lighter than my hair currently is (it was a dark blonde - I know it looks brown in this pic).

Bumping to see if anyone have any more thoughts. I'm happy to pay to have it fixed, just feel a bit awkward about going back

You might need some more accurate photos as telling people it was lighter/darker than this looks isn’t really giving the full impression!

FWIW it looks nothing like chocolate brown or like a box dye in that pic, but I know it’s disappointing when it doesn’t look how you expected it to. All you can do is go back and speak to them.

Greenqueen40 · 08/07/2024 21:35

I would be disappointed with that as well, especially for that price! I can't see much blonde in there. If I were you I would go back and explain and ask for them to add some more blonde.

I can't seem to get any accurate photos but will keep trying, it's the iPhone lighting makes things so bright and weird
