To ask which working pattern/opportunity to go for

Posting in here for traffic, could really do with some advice please.

Currently working a 3/4 day week (work every other Saturday) but it means I get every Thursday and Friday daytime with DD1. This job doesn't pay that well, so DH works every Tuesday and Thursday evening (in addition to working mon - fri 9-5), and I work a Friday evening in a pub to with late finishes (2am).

I Have a job opportunity to train and qualify for another role. This would mean either working 5 days a week and having weekends off, or working 4 days a week with an additional bi weekly Saturday. The job will pay well once I qualify, and it means both myself and DH can quit second jobs. This job means I wouldn't spend as much quality time with the kids though (DS 8, DD1) But would have our family evenings back and more money in the long run.

What would you do? The thought of missing out on 121 time with my DD upsets me as I know this time goes quick. But on the other hand I'm not sure how much longer I can cope with me and DH working 4 jobs between us.

Longer term does the trained role have opportunity for progression and further pay increases?

BitOutOfPractice · 08/07/2024 07:14

I’d say that you’ll regret not taking the training / better pay in the long run.

@Parkmybentley woah that was a super quick and speedy response - thanks! Yes the trained role will be almost double my current roles salary (but this kind of evens everything out as we won't be working our seconds jobs so it will almost replace them).

Completely agree with this.

Take the new job, you'll be around on Friday evenings, and if you want you can take the option with Fridays off and working every other Saturday, you can both give up second jobs, it's double the salary with chance for progression. It's a no brainer.

Vanessashanessajenkins2 · 08/07/2024 07:18

I would take the opportunity. You'll still have time with your DD and having one job each is much better for your quality of life and relationship.
That's not even factoring in the fact that the money will be much better.
How long will it take you to qualify?
Regardless though, I would bite their hand off. Good luck and well done!

@Vanessashanessajenkins2 Hi Vanessa, thanks so much. I think I've got far too comfortable where I currently work (day job). Have time to go the gym in the mornings, 5 min drive from home, more time with kids. Lots of perks but let's be honest, we only really go to work for the money.

It should only take around one year to qualify. We Really need more family time to, our evenings are manic and I miss spending time with DP to! X

Do the new role 5 days a week. The preschool years go super fast and think about what you want for the next 5-10 after that: full family weekends. Unless there’s an option to swap hours when dd1 starts school?

Agree, higher paid job!
