Posted about this a few weeks ago (I’ll link the thread below) basically I’ve had low potassium on and off for the last few months. I know why it’s low so that’s not the problem (chronic diarrhoea from an unrelated thing) but it’s just been bad recently which has caused the low potassium. At its lowest it was 2.2 but usually it seems to sit around the 2.7 mark. I’m just slightly worried - will it cause long term damage if it sits at 2.7 over a long period of time? Or does it only cause damage if it falls much lower? At my last blood test it was 2.7 and I feel utterly dreadful, although not as dreadful as I did when it was 2.2. I just

I’ve basically been on sando K non stop now for a few months and it doesn’t seem to be helping. I’ve only had to go to hospital once (when it was 2.2) and if it’s above 2.5 they said it’s fine to take sando k at home

im just so tired of feeling like shit and scared about long term damage. Is there anything stronger than sando k I can ask for? I eat a lot of potassium rich foods and take sando k 2 tablets 3x a day but it’s not doing anything. Is there a stronger version I can ask to try that might work better?

obviously I’ll ask my gp all this at my next appointment but just a bit worried and can’t sleep tonight!

thanks 🤞🏽

Sorry I should have been more clear, what I meant was I know it can cause heart problems if it’s really low (eg below 2.5) but I wasn’t sure whether to be worried or not about it being just a little bit low (like how it’s usually sitting at 2.7) over a long period of time or if it only causes problems if it suddenly goes much lower if that makes sense X

Your level should be nearer 4.0 for heart health, but the body can adapt to chronically low levels, so while your level could cause cardiac arrhythmia in someone who usually has a normal level, you've adapted to a degree, but it is worryingly low without much leeway for a furnished further drop. But you know what's causing it, you need to get on top of the chronic diarrhoea. You say its unrelated, but it's directly related IMO. Any sando K you take, will just come out the other end until you sort that out.
