To travel with less than 6 months on passport

We go on holiday in less than 3 weeks. Just realised dd will only have 5 months left on passport before we go - I did check everything when I booked, which was ages ago, don't know how I didn't spot this... anyway both the foreign office and the airline (BA) website say that for the country we're going to your passport only needs to be valid for length of stay, so I'm really hoping that means everything is fine and I can stop panicking. Or should I be booking a fast track passport application right now?!

Where are you travelling to?

BathingOnPeriod · 07/07/2024 21:54

If all the info says it's fine, I'd stop panicking. It's fine.

Travelling to Barbados

Big problem if it's Barbados.

I am pretty sure - because it's not in Europe - that you will need 6 months left on your passport on the day of departure.

OhshutupBeryl · 07/07/2024 21:56

I went to Sri Lanka in Feb and they require 6 months and I had around six months and two weeks. Didn't have a problem at all.

fashionqueen0123 · 07/07/2024 21:56

Barbados it just needs to be valid for your stay. Plenty of places you can to with less than 6 months. The EU, USA etc
don’t worry!

It’s literally not. Unlike other countries Barbados just require your passport is actually valid. None of this 3/6 month nonsense.

HungryLittleCrocodile · 07/07/2024 22:00

Hope this helps @EveryoneButSam It does appear to say that you only need to have a passport that is still in date for as long as you are there. Unusual as it's not in Europe! But that's what it says.

Oh, and don't forget your vaccinations!

Lots of places now only require passports to be valid for your period of travel. Some v outdated advice already, on this thread!

qwertasdfg · 07/07/2024 22:10

I would check with the airline in addition to check with country requirements.

EveryoneButSam · 07/07/2024 22:12

Oh this is making me feel much better thank you. I did check the airline website and they also said passport validity for duration of stay. Has anyone travelled with less than six months, no issue at UK passport control?

Vaccinations and travel insurance etc all sorted thank you! I am generally quite organised, just clearly not on this...

We did Australia in dec 2022 when husbands passport expired end Jan.
i nearly did him a serious injury - but exactly as you have found passport only needed to be valid for the stay. A couple of checkers mentioned “ yeah don’t forget to renew that when you get home “ but that was it.

SwingTheMonkey · 07/07/2024 22:24

Are vaccinations required for Barbados? I’ve been and didn’t need/ have any.

TheDrunkenClam · 07/07/2024 22:26

No - no vaccinations needed unless you have recently travelled somewhere with yellow fever @SwingTheMonkey

Justawaterformeplease · 07/07/2024 22:28

I had this travelling to Colombia, my passport expired about two weeks after I got back, but they were fine with it.

Yes you do. The WHO recommend that you have vaccinations for...

COVID-19, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, yellow fever, rabies, typhoid, and tetanus.

Seems some posters don't know the answer to the passport question, and some don't know about vaccinations!

Just goes to show that not everyone knows everything. Wink

This is UK advice on vaccinations
https://travelhealthpro.org.uk/country/23/barbados#Vaccine_Recommendations

Tetanus recommended for most travellers, Hep A and rabies for some travellers who are doing certain things, yellow fever cert required if coming from a country with yellow fever.

EveryoneButSam · 07/07/2024 22:37

Thank you so much. This is exactly what I wanted to hear. Feeling a lot better now!

We spoke to the travel nurse at our GP and they only recommended tetanus, which we were up to date with anyway for various reasons. Also all covid vaccinated. Think they said hep A only if you were vulnerable or going off the beaten track.

The WHO may recommend vaccinations but they aren’t a requirement for entry into Barbados @HungryLittleCrocodile
I’m here right now (in an amazing thunderstorm) 😊
