To look at the sun to bring on a sneeze?!

wefly · 07/07/2024 19:39

Am I the only person that does this?

If I need to sneeze, I look up at a light or the sun (not directly of course) and it instantly makes me sneeze.

Husband thinks I'm crazy. Surely I can't be the only one???

YANBU- I do that too
YABU- never heard of such madness

Autosomal Dominant Compelling Helioopthalmic Outburst (ACHOO) Syndrome

I always look to the sun or bright light to help a sneeze out

JaninaDuszejko · 07/07/2024 20:18

I've never looked at the sun to induce a sneeze but I, and all the blue eyed members of my family, are sun sneezers. SIL (mixed race) was incredulous when I told her the sun made me sneeze, she'd never heard of it.

PosiePerkinPootleFlump · 07/07/2024 20:19

Me too, and both of my parents. I only realised not everyone was like this when I said something about it to a friend aged about 20 and he looked at me as though I was mad.

its called photic sneezing

cavalier · 07/07/2024 20:20

A bright light at night can do that
learned that years ago

BouleDeSuif · 07/07/2024 20:20

Any bright light works for me.

ItmeansIdontcare · 07/07/2024 20:24

My parents said this to me in conversation a while back but I had no clue what they were talking about. Never does for me. But yes it’s a thing for sure.

Doje · 07/07/2024 20:24

Yes, me too! DH thinks I'm weird.

LittleGreenDuck · 07/07/2024 20:38

Yep, works for me.

Pressing on the skin between my nose and top lip will stop a sneeze.

DeepestDarkestRiver · 07/07/2024 20:40

Not bright light, but dragging a fingernail across my forehead on the side really hard makes me sneeze. One of my sons is the same, but not my other son or my husband. I feel like it's my super power. 😁

JumpstartMondays · 07/07/2024 20:40

YANBU I do this too, even just by going outside into day light from a darker space 😆 husband thinks it's weird, counts the seconds between me stepping out into a brighter environment and the sneeze, usually about 3 seconds 😆

LondonQueen · 07/07/2024 20:41

I've always done this!

CuttingMeOpenthenHealingMeFine · 07/07/2024 20:46

Yes works for me and DS. Husband and DD think we are mad.

Pleiades2020 · 07/07/2024 20:51

I get this, it's as per the early pp link. I have a theory though it's to do with how you scrunch up your face at the light combined with nose hairs and a sensitive nose. The movement makes your hairs scratch the sensitive inner nostril which causes the sneeze. Try frowning at the light instead of raising your cheeks as that makes less movement in the nose.

Bingbangboo · 07/07/2024 20:58

Works for me too!

sanityisamyth · 07/07/2024 20:59

My son suffers from photic sneezing. Drives him mad!

Occitane · 07/07/2024 21:04

Yes, this works for me too!

LittleGreenDuck · 07/07/2024 20:38

Yep, works for me.

Pressing on the skin between my nose and top lip will stop a sneeze.

But when you do this, your sneeze, when it finally happens, is much stronger!
