To think that even if a Labour government massively improved things

There’d be people on here moaning ?
I think KS and his team have come up with some decent ideas so far, particularly bringing people into government with real experience like James Timpson, Patrick Vallance and Alan Milburn. We’ll just have to see how they do but I’m prepared to give them time. The Conservatives had 14 years after all.
For the good of the country I hope they do well but there are actually posters on here who are actively hoping they don’t because of tribal politics. Why ? Surely if you care for your country you’d hope any government succeeds ?

I am so happy he has said the words country before party. At least he has grasped the concept.

KS winning was not my first choice but we are where we are, so let's see if we can make it work. I don't understand the people who want him to fail. Give the man a chance.

Govt in the UK is cyclical. You only have to look at the data since 1979. This result was no surprise, and there are a lot of new MPs with new ideas which is good. Let's see what they come up with.

I'd rather the Tory party got on with kicking out the remaining extremists (Braverman etc), and forming a more moderate and professional opposition. That is their job for now. Tom Tugendhat might make a good leader.

Yes @Alfreddoeblin they would.

chaosmaker · 08/07/2024 10:59

They are going on about growth which is something you can't have in perpetuity on a finite planet. I'd also prefer them not to go down the PFI/PPP stuff they did with blair. Looks like that is the way they are going. I'm not sure about where they want to build with planning laws.
It is true that people want them to fail just because they are obsessed with the name of the party. I spoilt my ballot this time as I live in an embedded labour area and could write what I thought on the ballot without it keeping tories in despite it having a large 'reform party' result. Don't like all this 'we have the mandate' talk when for a lot of people they just didn't want tory fiasco any longer.

Yes, they will. And perhaps rightly so, as long as the criticism is balanced and constructive. I say that as a Labour voter.

Of course, the criticism very often isn’t either of those things. Take the last Labour government - some people talk about it like it was a disaster and Blair (who was elected with substantial majorities three times). The reality is they improved the lives of very many people and did a lot of positive things (alongside some not very positive things).

5128gap · 08/07/2024 11:14

Of course. Because 'improve' in many ways is subjective and what looks better from one person's perspective is worse from another's. Stronger rights for tenants and workers is probably not going to please some of the employers and landlords on here. Building more social housing won't go down well for some who get a new estate built near them, or find less demand for their rental portfolio. We've already seen the fuss about the private school VAT. There's significant conflict between the interests of the haves and the have nots, so please one and you'll upset a large proportion of the other. Labour's job will be to make greater numbers better off than worse off. Which considering there are more have nots than haves, plus the haves who empathise with them, should be achievable in theory.

Actively wanting Labour to fail is ludicrous. As Sunak said in his concession speech – "his successes will be all our successes". Anyone spiteful enough to wish failure and delight over it happening are guilty of exactly what the Conservatives are so heavily criticised for – party before country.

KimberleyClark · 08/07/2024 11:37

I really want England to win the Euros. It will be put down to the Keir effect. England only won major football tournaments when there’s a Labour government! Even the medal haul at the London olympics was down to grassroots investment in sport by the Labour government!

User135644 · 08/07/2024 11:41

The problem is there's no easy fixes for systemic problems.

We have a broken economy. We have an ageing population. We require more and more immigration as a pyramid scheme to keep the country running and to maintain the illusion of 'growth', the NHS is fucked, education is a mess.

Starmer/Labour can't fix all these things and they can't do it one term.. Problem with government is they can only think in terms of 5 years, when it'll take decades to fix a lot of problems.

The Tories have just made things worse and worse for 14 years. The challenge for Labour is to reverse that. But they won't fix it, they can just makes things a bit less awful.

Sensible people will applaud the good stuff and condemn the bad. But being one-eyed isn’t a preserve of the Tories. Reflexive critics will always be with us, Tory, Labour, Lib, SNP or whatever.
