Okay I know this is a tedious question and I should not need to involve strangers on the internet but I’ve been flip flopping for the last hour.

Basically I am a neat freak. Mess gets me down - grew up in filth.

My kitchen grout is filthy - hasn’t been done in 2 months. I have the house to myself (therefore no one to keep coming in and out of kitchen). But it’s a four/five hour job (white grout and limestone effect tile) and I always regret starting half way through.

I have a really difficult 2 weeks ahead and I genuinely do think clean grout would make me feel less shit. I probably will be neglecting tidying so having a clean base would be amazing.

With Karcher and bleach it’s straightforward but very annoying. I could happily just sit on the sofa all day.

Feeling lazy.

What should I do? Or what would you do? I keep going between the two.

Clean the grout. You know it will make you feel better. Get some tunes on, blast them out! Kitchen workout.

MatildaTheCat · 07/07/2024 13:04

Clean it now and then save up to get it changed to a putty or beige grout and it will no longer be an issue.

LadyFeatheringt0n · 07/07/2024 13:04

Do people out there regularly clean their kitchen grout? Other than it getting wiped as part of normal cleaning of countertops I'm not sure I've ever specifically cleaned mine. My mother is a real clean freak and she'd have said immediately if it looked bad. She never has.

Guiltypleasures001 · 07/07/2024 13:05

Team grout this end too op
You'll be sitting there huffing to yourself with a twitching eye 😬

OttersAreMySpiritAnimal · 07/07/2024 13:06

You've said you'll feel better once it's done so eat the frog and just do it.
Also get some grout sealer.

AliceOlive · 07/07/2024 13:07

Does it truly take 4-5 hours every few months?

Is this floor or counter tops?

Is there not a product you can leave on for a bit then wash off?

We have muddy dogs. Plus I think our grout has not been installed properly - I posted a pic on mn and someone said my tiller had not done a good job. So I think it just traps muck.

Get a grout pen! It’s a bit like tippex. You just draw over the lines and it’s magically white again!

You haven't deep-cleaned your kitchen grout in... two months?!!

For me, this is a once every four or five years job. If that.

What the fuck are you doing in your kitchen?

If they are floor tiles (which the dog reference makes it sounds like they are) and the tiler used white grouting or didn't at least try extraordinarily hard to change your mind if you wanted white, then yes he didn't do a good job.

If they are floor tiles, then what kind of nutter goes with white grout?

Edited

It was white 2 months ago. It looks grubbier in person cause it’s not uniform.

They are floor. We were living out of the house and builder made exec decision to go with white. Luckily wall tiles are no bother at all. Haven’t done more than a superficial wipe with microfibre.

It just feels grubbby. When the grout is clean the kitchen feels light and airy.

I'm sorry you spend 5 HOURS cleaning grout?! If grubby grout bothers you that much get a steam cleaner, just point the hose attachment along it then mop, much quicker and kills germs.

AlisonDonut · 07/07/2024 13:19

I'm not going to lie, I've never cleaned the grout on a floor. Cleaned the floor but the grout? Nope.

Flip a coin OP. If the result fills you with sadness, then do the other thing.

I have a Karcher and use for this job. I don’t know what to say other than it just takes a lot of elbow grease and the kitchen is largest room in the house (kitchen diner). I don’t enjoy it, trust me!

Get a dark grey grout pen, spend a couple of hours going over it then be done with it

White grout on floor tiles will be a PITA forever!

Preiu · 07/07/2024 13:20

I have a theory our grout is not sealed

This is a new one on me. Don't think ours has been regrouted in the last decade. Didn't notice it.

cupcaske123 · 07/07/2024 13:23

If there's genuinely nothing better to do with your time and you think it will make you feel better, then why not.

WrigglyDonCat · 07/07/2024 13:25

Ah, well if they are floor tiles you are stuck with the problem the builder blessed you with unfortunately. Well the grout can be ground out and redone, but is a dirty messy job and it looks like they are very thin lines (probably 2mm at a guess) which doesn't make it any easier to either redo or clean properly.

We have a dark grey grout on pale white/grey tiles in the lounge and dark brown on the yellowy/beige kitchen tiles and it makes keeping things clean so much easier. The pale tiles are a 3mm grout and the beige ones a 5-6mm line (non reticulate edge so hard to be sure what was done with those) which makes your grout look even less than 2mm to the naked eye.

Preiu · 07/07/2024 13:25

I had a feeling people weren’t scrubbing grout like I do - so where am I going wrong?!

I can guess only I’ve messed up with tile and grout colour choice. Do non grout cleaners have dark grout?

OP posts:
NeoName · 07/07/2024 13:27

Have the grout replaced with a grey that matches the tiles. Honestly - life's too short for that level of maintence!

WrigglyDonCat · 07/07/2024 13:27

Pale tiles are fine as long as you have a dark grout as you can then just mop over to clean up after pooches, humans etc.
