Missing cat

Hi,

Just wondering what people would do in this situation. We had two cats and three years ago one started staying out for longer periods of time. They would then stay out for a day or two and then come home and then it went to only coming back every few days etc. she was clearly being fed and looked after somewhere else as she wasn’t coming back hungry or skinny so we assumed someone else was also feeding her. She then stopped coming home completely but we would occasionally see her on the street and she has came back to our garden a few times in the last few years. She is chipped. Tonight on a local Facebook page someone has posted that their cat is missing and it’s a photo of our cat- she has a really distinctive colour patch on her fur so we are certain it’s her. there’s been a few comments about people mentioning if she’s chipped and other well wishing comments but no reply’s by the poster yet.

Would it be unreasonable to message the poster and ask how long they’ve had the cat as we think it’s ours? I’m not looking to take it away from them but it would just be nice to know it’s our cat so we know she was ok.

Or do we just accept it that it’s their cat now? It just feels quite cheeky as she was chipped and had a collar so they would have knowingly taken someone else’s pet? We have children so it was quite upsetting for them at the time when they would always ask where the cat is!

Yanbu. I would certainly say something. Cats do vote with their feet (did she find your young children stressful?) but often they’re simply tempted away by neighbours who feed someone else’s pet.

Cats wander off and find new people to feed them. Pointless pets. Leave it

I mean if the cat has now gone missing maybe someone will find it and scan it's chip and it'll come back to you. They'd have no way of knowing if it's your cat or not if you messaged them now would they?

As far as I remember, cat ownership legally changes if it lives with someone else for two years. I think this is no longer your cat... I could be wrong though
