Feel insecure after seeing celebrities' Instagram accounts

People like Olivia Attwood, Lucy Mecklenburgh, Michelle Keegan.
They're all around my age. I know they have a lot more money and have likely had treatments but their skin, hair and figures look immaculate, they're all married/engaged, Lucy has children.
They get paid an awful lot and just seem to have it all.
I know social media is all a front, but sometimes I resent that I'll likely never have that kind of money. I am by no means in poverty and I know there are many people far worse off than me, but I'd love to just go shopping and buy what I wanted without having to worry about the prices.
I know it's stupid to feel this way but I do feel envious.

I don't follow one single person who is a 'celebrity' or 'influencer' on Instagram, because it's not real.

I've seen first hand what these people are like in real life and it is not what is portrayed on an instagram square or story x

shrumps · 06/07/2024 21:20

if you want to get an insight of insta life versus real life there are plenty of examples online. I would suggest a month off - literally go offline on for four weeks. Go for walks, read actual books; meet friends. It’s a huge challenge but could change your life.

HansHolbein · 06/07/2024 21:23

Best thing I ever did was delete Instagram.

Rainbowsponge · 06/07/2024 21:23

No hate on them but I’m genuinely not envious - I can’t think of anything worse than living in a grey and white sterile box, soullessly flogging rubbish online while knowing there was silicone(?) in my face. Be a real human OP - I think there will be a lot of regrets at the end for these people who are slaves to social media, transient fashions and live every moment through a camera.

Theedgeoftheabyss · 06/07/2024 21:24

It's....not.....fecking.....real.
Get a grip. 🙄

Honestly take it from someone who deals with that type of person on a daily basis, they’re really not that enviable. Terrible attitudes, insecurities off the charts, toxic frenemies, extremely expensive lifestyles that require serious money to maintain. It’s all filters, influencer PR freebies and sponsored posts. It takes a certain mindset to put your life out there for people to envy and aspire to, normality is far more rewarding.

True. I used to hang out with slebs a fair amount and spent a very instructive evening with a model once. My partner was on stage and everyone I knew was playing so we sat together. It was a very fancy evening with lots of models and film/music types.

She spent at least 70% of the evening talking about how she was rejected by Tom Ford and that girl over there was accepted and was she prettier than her and was her 'look' right. Blah blah runway, blah blah TV work, blah blah getting older, blah blah Botox, blah blah weight loss. I was at the time a fairly pretty, didn't do too badly-type, heavily relying on my personality to punch above my weight (hence muso boyfriend). Clearly vastly less beautiful than her. But so much happier, more confident, felt more attractive, secure in my relationship and my career. I wouldn't have swapped with her for anything.

Don't compare the inside of your life with the outside of theirs. Typically women who fixate on looks and external validation like insta-nobodies are miserable.

SisterMichael · 06/07/2024 21:26

Don’t forget that their appearance is how they make their money and it’s very expensive to maintain looking like that. It’s an oversaturated market and women often have a shelf life. So, yes, it looks glamorous but there are downsides - the cost, the insecurity, the competition.

Iffx · 06/07/2024 21:26

Once, a journalist went about having all the treatments that a particular celeb had (I might be wrong, I think the celeb was Cheryl Cole). It was painful, time consuming and expensive.

I suggest deleting instagram.

Waitingfordoggo · 06/07/2024 21:35

I don’t know who these people are either. I don’t use Insta and I don’t pay any attention to ‘celebrities’. Pretty sure my life is happier for it.

I’ve got a lovely (and messy!) home. I live in a beautiful part of the country with a lovely community around me. I’ve got a husband who I love and who loves me. I’ve got two great kids. We’re all blessed with good health. I’ve got a job I enjoy and enough money for a few treats here and there. Oh and a dog who is absolutely brilliant. I don’t want anyone else’s life.

Do you think those people you follow are happy? How do you know? Are they content with their lot or are they always looking for the next thing to spend money on? Is buying piles of clothes the right thing for the environment?

Comparison is the thief of joy. No amount of fancy clothes/cosmetic treatments has ever bought anyone true contentment, I’m sure of it.

Waitingfordoggo · 06/07/2024 21:37

@pinkstripeycat Not surprised about KM’s crow’s feet as she has always smoked like a chimney as far as I’m aware. Plus quite fond of the Colombian marching powder possibly.

Clearly you don't, or you wouldn't be feeling this way.

Dont be too hard on the OP.
Social media is specifically designed and engineered to make people feel insecure about themselves enough to buy into whatever lifestyle/products are being pushed.

In the future people will look back at all these highly addictive social media platforms and it will be a massive scandal

winniethepooped · 06/07/2024 22:00

Delete watsapp

winniethepooped · 06/07/2024 22:00

Oops I mean Instagram duh

True. It wasn't my intention to be harsh.

I think everything is like this now. Advertising is all fear based. "If you don't buy this then that will happen". I'm glad I'm not young in today's world.

DinaofCloud9 · 06/07/2024 22:02

I've only heard of Michelle Keegan and she's married to a right tit so I certainly wouldn't be jealous of her.

LenaMoon · 06/07/2024 22:03

OP ive no idea who you are but you are more beautiful than any of those false looking women. Do you really aspire to look like todays love island contestants, all comically large lips, fake teeth and faces so filled they look like drag queens. They should make you feel more secure, not less.
