Diet is horrendous and it needs to change, anyone else?

It needs to change now, I've had enough.
The issue is that I live in a houseshare ATM so don't always have full access to cooking facilities, I have a microwave/oven in my studio but that's it.
I'm in the process of buying a flat, so once I have a proper kitchen it'll be much better.
I'm not overweight at all or anywhere near, but I'm bloated all over and have a wobbly, bloated belly and arms because of how I eat.
I do exercise very often, but it's the diet. I don't drink any alcohol at all, but the bloating is awful.
I eat too many carbs and it makes my face bloat too.
My skin isn't great at all and I have permanent dark circles.
I've had a rough year so far and I am on antidepressants.
Anyway, I do eat porridge for breakfast with raspberries, which is something.
I have a milkshake several days a week, usually the frijj ones.
Snacks- cakes, biscuits, cookies, cereal bar, packet of crisps (not all at once, just giving examples!)
I love pizza, too much. I eat it a few times a week.
I like a jacket potato with cottage cheese or cheese and beans.
Like any sort of burgers, not really a fish/seafood eater. Chips, kebabs etc.
I do like pasta and rice dishes, I'm just hardly cooking ATM.
I'm barely eating any veg unless I get a sandwich with salad, and not enough fruit.
I drink some diet fizzy drinks, and some fruit juice but try to drink mainly water.
I'd love to make more things from scratch and stop eating constant sugar, fat and refined carbs.
My parents do me a healthy meal when I visit at weekends, which I appreciate.
I'm 33 and also single which I think makes me lack motivation to cook just for myself.
Would appreciate any advice/suggestions as I'm definitely 'skinny fat'.
I eat anything between 2000-2150 calories a day which are apparently my maintenance calories, but I would like to cut down to around 1700.

I also try to eat high protein snacks like cheese or those pepperami sticks.

Your body is use to these things so crave it. Best way to get rid of that craving is starve yourself of it. Go on a juice only diet for five days, or raw veg diet
It's hard but that worked for me I don't eat no pizza, chinese, candy, fizzy drink unless sparkling water.

Thank you, I might have to try that!
I just always feel hungry too which isn't good.
Glad it worked for you.

What if for two weeks you had a big salad for dinner every night? Lots of fresh veg, hard boiled egg, with another protein like prawns, grilled chicken, whatever. Perhaps having a carb free dinner every night would help you with the bloating. It really works for me, along with avoiding as many added carbs as possible. Think of it as a little reset to see how you feel and then expand your efforts from there.

I've just done my first weeks with low carbs and no sugar. First few days were tough but then I found it fine. I've already lost 1kg which isn't loads but a start. I'm not bloated anymore

If I lived alone and funds allowed, I would get Gousto/Hello Fresh/other delivery service and pick the meals that would create a second portion for lunch the next day.

I hate food prep of any type (thinking, planning, shopping, chopping, cooking) but enjoy healthy food.

I know, otherwise, I would throw out lots of fresh ingredients and eat a crisp sandwich unless it was made very easy for me. So it might actually be quite economical or at least I would consider it a good investment.

It's not carbs that are the issue, it's the carbs you are eating. Eat brown rice and whole meal pasta instead of pizza and chips. Cut out junk and processed food and up the veg. Diet drinks are toxic in my opinion and the taste of sugar you get from them makes the body crave the sugar that it was expecting and didn't get.

I would meal prep so you don't have to cook multiple times, things like three bean chilli & dal freeze well. I cook brown rice in bulk and freeze in portions. A simple supper I have is brown rice with a little sautéed garlic and chill, soy sauce, topped with steamed tender stem broccoli and a fried egg.

Simple lunch, hummus and crudités, carrot, celery and cucumber batons and a toasted pita all dipped in hummus.

When you go to your parents during the weekend, why don't you meal prep there? Or for at least 3-4
Days and then you can have just 1/2 days of carbs?
That is what I would do

You need to get into a habit of snacking on fruit and veg. Cut up loads of carrot sticks and have them in your fridge so you can pick at them and alwhas have an apple in your bag. I think you also need higher protein meals. Baby steps.

Newsenmum · 05/07/2024 19:58

Also carbs alone aren’t a problem! Just up your fruit and veg and protein and they’ll slowly reduce. Carbs are good.

Botox5578 · 05/07/2024 20:01

Thank you everyone for taking the time.
Really determined to stick to it this time.

Complex carbs are good, added, processed ones definitely are not.

You can do it! Remind yourself that as you become healthier the food you want changes, I can't eat most takeaways now, they make me feel ill. So it won't always be a struggle.

This is so very true. High "bad" carb foods and processed foods make me feel really awful so it makes healthier eating much easier. Getting rid of the bloat will be a reward in and of itself. Being bloated is just miserable.

Springbaby2023 · 05/07/2024 21:14

No advice but I’m in the same boat. I actually think I might be a bit addicted to pizza, chips, processed food etc basically. It’s a habit I need to kick and want to aim for around 2700 too. I’ve recently been trying to snack more on fruit and vegetables and protein and weirdly I now no longer ever crave crisps which is mental for me! But I do still crave sugary snacks to give me an energy boost, not helped by having a baby that doesn’t sleep.
