To think you shouldn't let dogs wee against houses?

Next door have acquired a dog. They let it out the front off the lead to do it's business.

The houses have a canopy over the front door that looks a bit like the picture below. The dog is coming under my canopy and cocking it's leg against the bricks at the bottom of the support. The bricks and paving often have wee stains on and it smells of stale wee around my front door. I know it's their dog as my doorbell captures it.

I've asked them not to let the dog wee there but they just shrug and say they can't stop it, it's just a bit wee or the rain will wash it away. It doesn't as it's under the shelter.

What can I put there to stop the dog weeing there?

I'm sick of cleaning the bricks and paving. I gave it a good scrub yesterday evening and I felt like screaming this morning when my camera reel showed the dog weeing there again.

It's also annoying as my own dog is now desperate to wee there too. I have to keep him on a very short lead and watch him like a hawk while I'm locking/unlocking the front door otherwise he'll cock his leg there too. He's never wee'd on the house before and usually goes on the grass.

To think you shouldn't let dogs wee against houses?

If their dog is on lead and they are allowing it to leave the pavement to pee on your house, you have a neighbour issue, more than a dog pee issue.

OP has stated that the dog is NOT on a lead!

They're allowing the dog to cross the boundary onto your property?

Put up a fence.

Just get a short white picket fence thing which you can buy in sections and push into the ground. Tell them why.

''I don't want your dog pissing up my house''.

Print out a still image from the Ring camera that shows the dog weeing, laminate and turn into a sign to stick on your front lawn.

"Things my porch is not:

  1. A spaceship
  2. A music recording studio
  3. A toilet for your dog"

Is the dog standing on the road or on your garden when it is doing this? I am not sure how close the porch is to the highway.

How aggressive are they likely to get? I think you could escalate your complaints - can you and/or your DH go round every time they do this and tell them to come and clean it?

RitaAndFrank · 05/07/2024 18:41

As a dog owner, I’m normally very understanding and even quite defensive of their little foibles however that is a step too far (pardon the pun, sorry). A dog shouldn’t be allowed to pee against your door step. YANBU.

rwalker · 05/07/2024 18:44

Just tell them you’ve used weed killer and bleach there

JC03745 · 05/07/2024 18:56

Does your doorbell camera have options such as alerting you to a dog or human approaching? We have cameras which can be set to alert for animals and/or humans. Does it have an alarm sound? Every time you see the dog approach- have a water squirter or sprinkler set or or a loud hooter sound go off. Possibly the sound of a pack of wolves to spook it.

JackieGoodman · 05/07/2024 19:03

Very rude of them, and yes, dog should be on a lead, lazy.

Dearg · 05/07/2024 19:09

As previously said, wash with bleach or Jeyes, or spray with a cleaner containing bleach, It kills the scent of urine and is also not a smell they like.
But I would also be talking to neighbour about keeping the dog under control.

I have 2 - they don’t pee on gates, bins, cars etc , it’s not hard .

Missed that in the first sentence- my mistake! It seems unusual (negligent?) to allow a new dog to be completely loose and unsupervised, or to supervise it entering your neighbour's property and allowing it to pee on their house. Either way, I still think it is a neighbour problem.

I would just piss on their door!

I’m of this school of thought. Piss in a jug every day and chuck it over their porch.

YorkshirePuddingsGreatestFan · 05/07/2024 19:32

We're not directly on the street. We've got a drive and front garden between us and the footpath. There's no fences, so the dog is just walking over from their side.

Thanks for the suggestions on Jeyes fluid, pepper etc. I'll give some of those a try and see if I can deter the dog as well as talking to the neighbours again.

Extra hot chilli powder

KnickerlessParsons · 05/07/2024 19:55

Wee in a jug every morning and pour it on their house.

CheerfulBunny · 05/07/2024 19:55

I'm a dog lover but I wouldn't be happy about that. It sounds like they're being a bit dismissive of your feelings as well which isn't cool as you've raised it with them - that's their cue to absolutely stop it IMO.
Could you rearrange some pots so that the dog can't get close enough to smell and piddle up the bricks? Unless it restricts access on your drive for your car of course. If it's feasible it might put the dog off (or start them peeing up something else..)

WinterInTheAutumn · 05/07/2024 20:09

Your NDN are being completely irresponsible if the front garden isn’t A) fenced off and B) allows the dog to piss all over your property!

Is there a reason why you can’t put a dividing fence/hedge between the two gardens?

Crumpleton · 05/07/2024 20:23

Is this shared land or are they trespassing onto your garden?

It sounds like you've open planned gardens but that doesn't mean your neighbour can just walk across your garde/lawn.

CountdownCat · 05/07/2024 20:33

We have a similar thing, about a 1m strip of gravel between the house and a garden wall which separates the front garden from the street.

The amount of dog walkers our ring doorbell catches letting their disgusting animals wander INTO our front garden and piss on the wall and on our gravel is infuriating, whilst the owners look on lovingly. No amount of disinfectant seems to help as they are clearly in the habit now.

Tried lots of animal friendly products to deter them, but to be honest I'm beginning to cease caring about what happens to the animals as I'm sick of the stench of stale dog piss.

SleepingisanArt · 05/07/2024 20:52

There is a dog who has single handedly killed plants in my front garden by persistently peeing on them. I am going to get my revenge by replacing the plants with lavender and spaying the area with citronella as apparently dogs don't like the smell of either and will avoid! And if the old bag who just let's her dog wander onto my garden complains I'm going to present her with an invoice for the dead plants plus the cost of replacements!

Jeyes Fluid is poisonous to animals, I'd advise against it.

Time to put up a fence. Good fences make good neighbours. Or hedges.

Actually I think I'd do this. In front of them.

Peppermint oil

Get one of the cat scare high pitch nose things. It works on dogs too.
